We gather that dark times lay ahead of us, the unpredictable trajectory of this outbreak is out of our hands as we enter a period of real uncertainty. For our music industry we hold so dear, our musicians, clubs and festivals, the agents, promoters and dancers, and all others involved in making our industry what it is today, this has far-reaching implications for all of us. 

Viral Syndicate is a digital compilation series formed by ourselves to help support artists financially during the Coronavirus outbreak. All proceeds will directly fund artists involved with the release, or towards a charity of their choice if the artist prefers. We hope to deliver these compilations on a regular basis to help fund artists as much as possible. This is our way of helping our scene stay afloat during this difficult time. 

We hope our project and the music we’ll be sharing through this series will shed some light over this darkness.

‘Berghain Fünfzehn’ sees @Luke-Slater creating new compositions from the Ostgut Ton back catalogue, chopping, looping tweaking and deploying sounds into a mix that is both a playful retrospective of the label and future-facing vision for mixing and dance music.

On April 17, seven exclusive tracks from the ‘Berghain Fünfzehn’ DJ mix will be released on two 12”s and for streaming/digital download. De- and reconstructing the Ostgut Ton discography, Slater’s vision encompasses not only sampling but live electronics and improvisation, resulting in a broad spectrum of heady and liminal dance music: from ultra stripped-back mindfuck techno, vocals and blasts of distortion to breakbeat excursions, minimalistic acid, and rave polyrhythms. In other words: the arc of the label through Slater’s singular hallucinatory prism.

As someone who's studied jazz and trained as a jazz drummer, @Paleman knows a thing or two about percussion and the freedom it allows. Ever-creative and forward-thinking, the Manchester producer is returning to his self-titled imprint for the four-tracked 'PLMN004'. The release follows last year's sold-out, one-take improvisations of 'PLMN003' and 'Music for Three Cymbals', a record improvised using (you guessed it) three cymbals, two mics and some mallets. 'PLMN004' is full of dark, shadowy club constructs like 'Wax Wasp', which we're premiering below. Placing drumwork front and centre of the track, Paleman goes for cold and cavernous techno, employing rhythmic switch-ups and dull thuds, sounding like as though someone's hammering on the door. Following appearances on Super Kitchen and Trax Couture, London-based producer Drum Thing (@drumthing)  makes his Scuffed debut with three tracks spanning percussive club tools and ethereal electronics.

Scuffed Recordings line up their second vinyl sampler, featuring four heavy-hitting club tracks spanning the last year of the label’s output. The release sees tracks from Dubrunner, Heritage, Stones Taro, and Joe Craven pressed to vinyl for the first time, in a limited run of white labels.

Kicking off the release is Dubrunner’s ‘Zoya’s Trip’, originally released in December 2019 on the Scuffed Presents 003 release. Zoya’s Trip has become one of the most popular tracks in the Scuffed catalogue, spending six months in Beatport’s Leftfield House & Techno top 10, and seeing DJ support from the likes of Anja Schneider, Moxie, and Oneman.

Up next is ‘The Revelation’ from Brighton-based duo Heritage, taken from their EP of the same name. With its bass-heavy, breaks-driven beat, The Revelation picked up plays on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, Boiler Room, and saw coverage in Mixmag and DJ Mag.

On the B-side Scuffed veteran Stones Taro steps up with the weighty ‘To Rave’. As one of the most long-standing members of the label’s roster, Kyoto-based Stones Taro has become a firm fan favourite with his idiosyncratic take on UK rave music.

Closing out the release is Joe Craven’s ‘Staring At Your Feet Or Mine’, a percussive UK techno stepper originally taken from the Bristol-based producer’s debut release.

With ‘3 YEARS OF E-MISSIONS’, the New York based label embarks on its largest project to date. Taking in thirteen tracks, the compilation brings together some of the label’s core artists such as Tred, Rush Plus, and CYD along with extended friends and family like White Materials boss Young Male and Enemy Records’ Dustin Zahn.

Sonically, the compilation perfectly exemplifies the E-MISSIONS ethos. This is intertwined through his use of sampling in the title track, as a reference to the UK Dubstep aesthetic that’s still running through much of UK Techno to this day.
