I’ve been around long enough to really understand what these songs are all about now.   It’s a conversation isn’t it,  between the song and the musicians and sometimes when folk talk they don’t talk about nice things. They don’t say nice things. Like in - Don’t  explain - it’s the starkness of the betrayal that makes the song so powerful and you need to have loved and lost a bit to fully get it. As a writer and a vocalist - Jazz is all about the emotional fusion of melody and lyric for me. Songs are meant to be sung; everything else is extension and interpretation. Words don’t get in the way - they are the way to the music, and sometimes you can lose sight of that in the virtuosity of non vocal   performance. Hey..., but maybe I’m biased... singers eh!’
