Dear Orphic, Float Records and HEDON,

First of all, I would like to show you my gratitude for the opportunity you’re giving upcoming, relatively unknown, artists (like me) with this contest. It shows you have the hearts in the right places. 

Secondly, the mix. The way I challenged myself is was in a three part way. As always, I tried to stay in the mix and really work behind my decks (I hope this translates well to the listener). Only then I can get a sense of fulfillment when I DJ. Moreover, where I personally challenged myself the most, was to refrain from the more hypnotic tracks I would play ‘normally’ and choose tracks that were ‘different’ but still that felt close to me as a person. Lastly, because my track selection differed from the usual, I utilized slightly dissimilar mixing techniques. Ones that give off a more old school ambience. 

That’s partly where the title “A Shift In Ambience” comes from. I tried shifting the ambience of sound, without feeling like it wasn’t me who was playing. I just transposed on my spectrum of musicality to a point where I felt it was suitable for the moment and my mood. 

Last but certainly not least, I truely was filled with enjoyment when recording this podcast and I couldn’t stop bumping my head around when playing these tracks. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Jazz-o-Tech is a label that draws on the rich heritage of two of the most visionary and experimental genes in music: jazz and techno. Taking inspiration from the freeform creative nature of those two musical worlds, artists on the label mix tradition with modernity, improvisation with experimentation, and create a new sound known as techno-jazz. Modern music needs to be ambitious. It must aim to deliver a musical message which is one step beyond what has already been heard. It must take you on a new musical journey into unknown dimensions and emotions. That is the Jazz-o-Tech mission.

GRØMM is a DJ from Hamburg. She is resident and integral part of the 6D. collective, which embodies timeless and sophisticated techno. Her sound is characterized by rhythmic, minimalist elements and rolling basslines, which are sometimes more psychedelic and sometimes more rave-oriented. Typical of her sets is the build-up of tension that releases energy in waves. As part of the new generation of PAL residents, GRØMM brings fresh influence to the Hamburg club scene. This week Köster joins us for the next episode of our vinyl series. Being inspired by music from the 90’s and the early 00’s, he is a DJ from Amsterdam whose focus lies primarily on old-school music that matches his style and what he likes to push in his sets.

Since 2019 his taste was based on high-energy old school rhythms, yet last year he expanded his collection with more Speed Garage, UK Garage, Dubstep and other bass driven genres. The combination of 4x4 tracks and breaks make for what Köster sees as a good impact on a dance floor.

About the Artist: NYC-based selector threehz explores the emotive sides of techno, experimental, and ambient music for every performance, taking inspiration from sludgy dark psychedelia to pulsing warpdrive drum tracks. Whether rinsing healing or destructive frequencies, as their namesake suggests, threehz knows how to craft textured, curated soundscapes on the dance floor which can be heard at multiple event series’ in NYC and residencies for The Lot Radio.

About the set: This was an opening set, so it starts low and dark and works up to a place where the energy is built up and ready to hand off.  I love to incorporate contemporary favorites with classic cuts going back to the 90s, in a way that I think cohesively marries the different eras of techno despite spanning over 30 years of time and this mix definitely reflects that. While I am usually aiming for a psychedelic, hypnotic vibe, I always feel like Bossa (especially on a Saturday) can have a bit of an unhinged energy so I tried to tap into that a bit towards the last third of the mix. I was pleased with how this turned out for a live set and am happy to be able to share it.  Many thanks to Facetime/Eric for having me!
