We welcome Niall Power to the HD mix series for mix #080. After his recent feature on our Asbeel EP with his brilliant track 'Tape Worm Jim', it felt the right time to ask Niall for one of his all vinyl electro assaults.

Niall Power hailing from Waterford, Ireland has been sifting through record store shelves since the late 90’s. At the beginning of the 2000’s Power set up the 'Electric Circus' club night which ran and promoted for over a decade, staying true to the underground sound that inspired him with often being credited as an renowned artists' first booking in Ireland.


The year of 2003 saw Power become a Resident DJ for Resistance sharing the stage with biggest names in dance music at the time, while becoming a national household name for the avid electronic music listener. Fastforward to the current day, Power still holds strong to all things electro and techno. Currently the host of 'The Electric Circus Show' on the pirate radio station opentempo fm, where he invites artists both past and present to guest mix on his show. 


Power has been busy in his studio as of late with his own record label 'MiniMan Records' with the label's first release dropping this December. Focusing on the warped and twisted sonic sounds that have featured in his dark and deep groove DJ sets over decades of mixing. This mix shows Power at his best, digging deep into the varied and vast record collection to lay down a fast paced, all vinyl mix, heavily influenced by the old school sounds of Detroit but also featuring mutated sounds of the past, present and future.

1. Which artists has influenced you the most?

- I've always had a huge admiration for all things Detroit and the 90’s which I grew up in and in particular the Original Trio of UR 101, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Mad Mike. HEROES!

2. What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- In Jan 2022, I launched my own Label Mini Man Records, Focusing on Electro & Techno with a nod to all things Detroit, Acid, Funk & Sci-Fi.
The 1st EP, The Bends was a Sci-Fi style electro EP (Limited Number still available ) and the 2nd instalment Sea Snake drops 30th Sep which is a darker electro EP with lots of soul and funk it comes with a killer remix from Human Rebellion which is pure fire. The 3rd EP on MMR which is part of a trilogy as the music gets darker is due out 2023.. I’ve a couple of other projects bubbling under the surface and all will be revealed, you will have to stay tuned.

3. Which artists/labels are more relevant to you now?

- Artists like Human rebellion, The Exaltics, Heinrich Dressel, Scape One, Maelstrom are inspiring. While labels like, Science Cult, Rave or Die, Truss and Mechatronica keep on knocking out the goods, also shouts out to Keith Tucker aka K1 for his non-stop work and rereleasing some of his PuzzleBox back catalogue along with future classics. On the Techno front Artists like Lee Holman and Stef Mendesidis are always on top of their game.

4. What inspires you now to create music?

- Positive energy and positive vibes help me, but to be honest, I only make music when I’m in a state of flow and I make whatever flows out through me, I never force it or push it, I might wake up with an idea and I go straight into the studio and jam out my ideas.

5. If it's not a secret, what set-up do you use when creating music?

- No secret, I record everything through an old Mackie 24/8 straight into the Ableton which is my DAW of choice. My Hardware setup has been the same for a long time and I’m super happy with it.

Alienata

Spanish-born, Berlin-based Alienata is a self-described sound obsessive
whose sets span obscure electro, ACID, dub, IDM, dark disco, hypnotic techno, industrial atmospheres, breakbeats, cosmic jazz , UK electro, Detroit, Chicago influences and crazy sounds in general. A former philosophy student with a particular interest in mysticism, Alienata began DJing in 2004. In conjunction with Valencia's Overflow Collective, she not only served as a resident DJ but also participated in theatre and music technology workshops and oversaw its label operations. Her earliest contact with Germany's music scene came through Leipzig's Homoelektrik collective, and upon moving to Berlin in 2011, she quickly found an adoptive family in the Killekill label and associated Krake Festival. This relationship helped make her a respected mainstay in clubs in Berlin, Germany and Europe, but her international profile has been steadily increasing each year: NYC, Chicago, Sydney, Melbourne, Bogotá, Moscow. In recent times we have been able to experience its genuine style in booths like Fabric, Panorama
Bar or ADE. When behind the decks, Alienata is closely attuned to both internal and external influences and is unconcerned with providing listeners with an outstanding and energetic experience. It is not strange that legends like Dave Clarke (who recently played a B2B in ADE) DJ Stingray, Ben Sims or Ron Morelli have expressed all their support and respect for her.

With all that knowledge behind and a true love for music she decided to start her own imprint “Discos Atónicos” in 2017 where she can materialize all its varied influences, counting on legendary artists like Beta Evers, Dez Williams, Artificiero, BS-1 or Cosmic Force.

While primarily focusing on DJing, Alienata has released a few different records & remixes in recent years with collaborations with Snuffo of the jacking Snuff Crew & Sync24 -CEO of the legendary UK electro imprint Cultivated Electronics- Her most recent contribution has been to the great Ben Sims ‘Tribology’ Compilation, together with artists of the size of Robert Hood, James Ruskin or Mark Broom.
Since 2017 she hosts a monthly show called ‘Nova Express’ on the French LYL radio.

Alex Rodriguez is a talented musician, music producer, and audio engineer originally from the “The Magic City” Miami, FL. Now residing in “The Valley” Phoenix, AZ, his ear for music has evolved to different heights.
Best known as Cloak, among several other pseudonyms, he has become one of the most revered Electro producers in the modern era. Debuting in 2006 he established his sound, consisting of hard booming beats, chilling samples, distorted tones, melodic synthesizers, and any noise that will make your body move. As the founding Member of “Ghostlight”, and “Cloak & Dagger”, he’s continued to push his music to the outer limits of sound. Influenced by the styles of Miami Booty Bass, Electro, and Hip Hop, he will almost always infuse each genre somehow in every production.
At age 16 he began using studio equipment under the direction of Dj/Producer Nick Pinnington, who felt his young protégé was always in the background or in “the dark”, which resulted in Alex taking the names Cloak & BackgroundNoize. Throughout the years he has been heavily influenced by producers such as: David Noller, Timbaland, Scott Christina, Aphex Twin, Dr. Dre, Anthony Rother, Dan Warren, Danny B, Scott Storch, The Neptunes, Nick Pinnington & Jason Williams. After High School he attended SAE Miami to learn the art of Audio Engineering, and perfect his craft. Cloak has written and produced multiple chart-topping bangers.
Cloak has collaborated with artists and labels such as: Code Rising, Phonotronix, Dagger, Elektro Global, Bass Agenda, Ohverclock, Inhuman Designed, James Wolfe, Trip Theory, Nick Wicked, Alekay, Synthetix and Dan Warren (Theory).

He’s been a DJ for the best part of three decades playing in clubs and festivals all over his native Ireland whilst also bringing his bags of records to clubs like Griessmuehle and Razzmatazz. Having held residences with renowned club nights Resistance, Backwards and his own Electric Circus, which is now a monthly Radio show on Pirate Radio station; OpenTempo FM which hosts an array of amazing mixes monthly.

Niall Power aka https://soundcloud.com/power_mmr is a DJ, Producer, Radio show host of The Electric Circus Show and label boss of Midi Mode Records.

Hailing from Waterford in Ireland, Power has exported his DJing skills worldwide and is gaining international recognition for his productions.

The Fake Reality ep is due out in July 2024 - an electro & techno funk collaboration between Power and Human Rebellion, with a remix by Nite Fleit. Check it out:

Electric Circus was a club night which was run & promoted by Power in his home town of Waterford. In that time, it show cased local, national and international DJs & Live Acts, which eventually evolved into The Electric Circus Show, playing host to some amazing DJ & Live sets from guests like, DVS NME, Scape One, Neil Landstrumm, Transparent Sound, Dez Williams, Luke Eargoggle, ADJ, Human Rebellion and many more (including me!).

Power has shared the DJ Booth and has been the warm up Dj for legends such as Jeff Mils, Juan Atkins, Derek May, Robert Hood, Rolando, Carl Craig, Dave Clarke, Green Velvet, Luke Slater, Oscar Mulero, Speedy J, Steve Rachmad, Ben Sims, Slam, and many more.

He’s productions have been played by artists like Dave Clarke, L.F.T, Plant43, DVS NME and Sunil Sharpe.

I have been a big fan of Power's DJing skills and booked him to play at my techno night in my hometown of Mullingar about 20 years ago, so we go way back and I am delighted to have him on board.

Power, a true stayer to the underground has a made his mark in the electronic music scene and continues to make significant strides across multiple facets of the industry. From the early 2000’s as a DJ to his current ventures in music production, and radio hosting. As a DJ, Power has performing at an array of prestigious venues and festivals across his native Ireland and in Europe. His dynamic sets, which blend styles and genres, while always being true to Detroit Techno & Electro earned him residencies at multiple club nights, often playing along side genre elites like Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Derek May to Dave Clarke, affirming his deep connection to the underground music community. While he also curating & promoting his club night Electric Circus for over a decade, hosting names Robert Hood, Steve Rachmad to Luke Slater. A notable aspect of Power’s career is his role as the host of the ' The Electric Circus Show ' a pirate radio show on opentempo fm. Through this platform, Power is dedicated to introducing listeners to a wide range of global talent that airs monthly. As a producer, Power's work has also made waves, with releases on labels such as Hilltown Disco, Mini Man Records,TakeOverRecords and Psykosocial. In addition to these Power oversees a record label, Midi Mode Records adding another dimension to his multifaceted career. Through his label, sonic sounds of Electro & Techno can be found as he continues to push the next wave of electronic music.
