It started, as it so often does, with two old friends hanging out.

John Shima and C P Smith were joking around one evening in their home city of Sheffield. At some point, Smith challenged Shima that, if the latter could produce a record using nothing more than a small modular synth setup, then Smith would release it on his Central Processing Unit label. As heads will know, while Shima has drops on imprints like FireScope and Subwax Excursions to his name, he had never previously released anything via CPU. Shima accepted, and thus we now have his CPU debut, the four-track EP CPU Modular 1.

The specific setup that Shima worked with for these tracks was Smith’s Doepfer A-100P6 Suitcase, a small but mighty combination of modules and programmers. It’s no surprise that Shima was able to familiarise himself with the equipment in double-quick time - after all, Shima was an early adopter of the Eurorack modular format back in the day. What emerged from the CPU Modular 1 sessions was a quartet of devastatingly effective DJ tools, mid-set rollers which will get the dance moving something crazy.

Opener ‘003’ kicks the EP off as it means to go on. There’s something at once stiff-necked and buoyant about the rhythms here, all thwacking Roland tones and snares which crack like someone whipping a length of sheet metal. While the beat barrels unyieldingly onwards, the programming in the tuned modulars is more exploratory and even trippy, full of delay-laced bleeps and flighty rhythmic motifs. It comes together for a cracking mix in the vein of artists like Jerome Hill and London Modular Alliance. Second A-side cut ‘010’ is no different, the street-beat groove and grumbling low-ends underpinning all manner of modular wizardry.

CPU Modular 1 is really timeless stuff, a set of percussion-heavy, future-focussed beats which recalls Smith’s own CPU drop ‘DJ Tools Vol.1 - 808 Tracks’. ‘011’ kicks of CPU Modular 1’s second-half with a dose of Drexciyan dystopia, playing an atonal loop off of an insistent bass wiggle and neurotic hi-hats. Even when Shima tightens or slackens the modulars here, ‘011’ remains unyielding, a dose of pure ‘Wip3out’ energy that you could happily groove to all day long. The EP closes out with ‘005’, a gnarled, gurgling production which still retains the dancefloor punch of the rest of the record.

For his Central Processing Unit debut, John Shima was tasked to produce four tracks using a single small modular setup. Unsurprisingly given the pedigree of this seasoned machine-funk pro, Shima aced the assignment.

Exactly one year after his 2021 release entitled 'The Electro Manifesto', DVS NME returns with a collection of new tracks that were produced between late 2021 and early 2022. This 25-track album is another thematic nod to class struggle with the hope to stir class consciousness in listeners. Every song title makes reference to some tenant of the destructive and unequal economic system called capitalism as well as its ever-looming shadow socialism. Even the album cover borrows inspiration from Soviet-era propaganda, re-adapting the artistic styles of many communist agitators.

This album, as with the last, relies heavily on the sounds of classic Electro machines like Mono/Poly, MS-20, SH-101, Jupiter-8, Juno-106, SH-2, System 100, Juno 60, JX-3P, TB-303, Polysix, TR-606, OB-8, TR-808, ARP Odyssey, as well as some contemporary additions to his studio like Hydrasynth, System 8, MC-101, Prophet Rev2, Novation Peak, Minilogue, SE-02, and Microkorg.

Bulgarian dark mastermind MANASYt（Petar Tassev) has been rocking his own brand of Nurolektro since 2003. He’s responsible for a vast array of menacing titles on labels such as Bunker, Touchin' Bass, Kommando 6 and Musar. An artist that couldn’t care less about trends nor hypes, and whose main driving force is that authentic passion for the genre.
Some of his tunes resemble a future horror movie soundtrack, others a visit to a mental clinic but most sound like what exactly hostile aliens would listen to while attacking Earth.

2022 marks the 25th anniversary of Suction Records, the Toronto-based electro/IDM label founded in 1997 by two emerging producers, Lowfish (aka Gregory De Rocher) and Solvent (aka Jason Amm), the latter still overseeing the label to this day. The label’s inaugural release was a split Lowfish/Solvent 12”, marking both artists’ debut vinyl appearance. 

Gregory and Jason had known each other since high-school, but a deeper friendship was forged during their university years, after Gregory introduced Jason to early Rephlex releases by Aphex Twin and µ-Ziq. Gregory had been making electronic music in his bedroom for more than a decade, but it was those Rephlex releases that ignited Jason’s passion to do the same. After several years of obsessive gear buying, music making, and playing tracks for each other, Lowfish and Solvent had hit their stride, and their demos even attracted the interest of legendary early IDM labels labels Skam (for Lowfish), and Isophlux (for Solvent). But things were slow-moving in those days — letters, faxes, phone calls… nothing was panning out. So that’s when they decided to start their own label, and put out 300 copies of this 12”, suction001.

The label was heavily inspired by contemporary artists like AFX, Autechre, and Panasonic, but on suction001, those influences collided with their ‘80s synth-pop and industrial roots to create something unique. 25 years later, it still sounds fresh, and like nothing else out there. On suction001, 808 drum machines are run through distortion and breakbeats are chopped and mangled, contrasting with melodic OMD-style leads and catchy synth-pop basslines — a sound the label would refer to as ‘distortion pedal new wave.’ 

Over the past 25 years, Suction’s sound has morphed and evolved, but in recent years has shifted back to it’s original Rephlex-inspired roots. That makes 2022 the perfect year to revisit this wild, 1997 debut, now reissued in a new, expanded edition for it’s 25th anniversary. The reissue adds 2 bonus tracks — a 1999 remix by Detroit electro-punk duo ADULT., along with a previously-unreleased version of Lowfish’s A1 cut, and also features new and improved artwork, including an insert with full label discography. 

Limited to 500 copies, and comes with a Bandcamp download card.

With "Columbiformes EP", Rawax once again makes space for Matthias Schildger to channel his many musical personas into one cohesive yet versatile release. Known under aliases like Star_Dub, Binary Operator, Polyfan Polyphenix, CNTRL, or simply M.S., Schildger uses his decades of experience to deliver five tracks that balance minimal precision with atmospheric playfulness.

"Pigeon Swarm (Vinyl Edit)" sets the tone with stripped-back minimal energy that harks back to the golden days of the genre. Percussive and bouncy, its groove feels both light and infectious, while a deep synth-line quietly fills the background, giving the track the depth it needs to stay locked on the floor. It’s minimal music at its grooviest and most timeless.

"Columbiformes" shifts gears into something darker and heavier. Built around a wobbling synth-line and a massive, almost physical bassline, the track still keeps its stripped-back character, but its energy is undeniable. Playful in details yet menacing in presence, it’s the kind of cut that shackles dancers to the groove without offering much of a way out.

"Breakin’ Doves" opens the B-side with a deep and breakbeat-driven mood, carrying that late-night atmosphere Matthias crafts so well. A subtle sense of melancholy runs beneath the breaks and grooves, creating a track that feels like the soundtrack to a dancefloor lost in time - irresistible, driving, but wrapped in a kind of nocturnal haze.

"Bird Hypnotizm" rounds off the vinyl edition with trippy textures and atmospheric spirals. The track is playful yet entrancing, layering Matthias’ sound design into an environment that feels otherworldly but never loses its dancefloor focus. It’s hypnotic, subtle, and perfectly suited as a closer.

The digital-only track, "A Song For Feral Pigeons," is perhaps the EP’s secret weapon. Lean and minimal, but with a deep groove that keeps listeners moving, it’s a reminder of Matthias’ ability to create understated yet captivating pieces. Its combination of groove and texture makes it a fitting companion to the vinyl cuts and ensures the "Columbiformes EP" ends on a note that is as functional as it is thoughtful.

Altogether, "Columbiformes EP" is Matthias Schildger at his most versatile - merging minimal grooves, breakbeat flourishes, and atmospheric soundscapes into a release that feels both classic and forward-looking. It’s a record that honors minimal’s past while continuing to evolve it, much like the restless flight of the birds that inspired it.
