Your December free download is a remix, and an important piece of music to me personally. Partly because it was the result of a chance string of events driven by my love of the original track and a fortuitous meeting with Frederic D. Oberland, one half of The Rustle of the Stars with Richard Knox. And partly because I love the intensity and feeling of the original which I have tried to convey in my own way with little regard for the usual rules of making music - ambient strings arrangement at one end, and a drum and bass wall of sound at the other, because that's what I felt was required to communicate the emotions I found in the original piece, inspired by "a musical passage through the North Pole explorer diaries".  
 
Here's what Richard and Frederic said about the original:  "We would like to think of this as a polar journey to the ends of the earth through the arctic sea. We kept in mind the first polar expeditions, Edgar Allan Poe's Dream-Land, the ships trapped or crushed by ice, the point of no-return, the minds sinking, the attempt on the Pole ending in disaster, the quest of the Northwest Passage, Erebus & Terror, the Mercy Bay, Mangazeya, Charles Francis Hall, Beechey Island, the Midnight sun and the Polar night."
 
It's very winter-y. And I'm very pleased Richard and Frederic agreed to allow me to give the remix away for free to anyone who would like to hear it this Christmas!

Adam Beyer’s Drumcode juggernaut attracts more fans and critical plaudits with each passing year. Holding firm on its future facing ethos, techno’s number one label presents a new volume in its acclaimed A-Sides series with 20 prime tracks to signify its 20th anniversary. 

Such is the volume of quality music Adam Beyer receives throughout the course of the year, releasing all of it would be impossible. Enter the blue chip A-Sides series: a chance for the quality-obsessive label head to issue a collection of outstanding tracks that couldn’t fit in their regular EP release schedule. 

With an eye on future talent, as much as the label’s established roster of heavy-hitters, the compilation showcases the full breadth of Drumcode’s multifaceted techno sound, equal parts inspiring and functional.
 
Led by the stealth techno funk of ‘Nine of You’, Beyer’s deft collaboration with Mark Reeve, the compilation takes in exciting highlights from big guns such as Alan Fitzpatrick, Dustin Zahn, Bart Skils, Pleasurekraft, Luca Agnelli, Jay Lumen, Kaiserdisco and Gary Beck. 

The rich vein of form displayed by emerging techno talent is similarly given prime position. Rising DJ/producer Boxia makes his Drumcode debut, fresh from a well-received warm up set for the crew at the hugely successful Junction 2 festival in London, while the likes of Enrico Sangiuliano, Juan Sanchez, Ian O’Donovan and Timmo also drop fire, establishing their credentials as some of the most promising talent breaking through the ranks in 2016. 

Reinforcing the global scope of the label, artists such as The Junkies from Toronto and Layton Giordani from New York, prove techno is winning a place in the heart of the new generation of artists coming out of North America. 

Adam Beyer & Mark Reeve - Nine Of You - Drumcode - DC159

For The Nursery’s fifth instalment, meet the young, yet mature sound of T_st. Apart from the fact that T_st consists of two young Armenians, information about them is scarce. But who needs biographies when you have already built a discography like theirs? T_st delivers techno with influences ranging from ambient to breakbeat, from electronica to industrial, and everything in between.

As far as their mature sound and anonymity go, "Destination Unknown" is no exception. The four tracks carry the unadorned titles "qq3" until "qq6". The first track "qq3" is a relatively downtempo one. It has an unstoppable groove, supported by many layers of hiss, noise and scapes, perfectly suited for the earlier hours of the night. Also pretty downtempo, only with a slightly more aggressive percussion pattern is "qq4", and after that it’s on to the proverbial flip side, where the more peak time stuff is found.

"qq5" is a bit faster than the first two tracks, and is carried by its uplifting, bell-like synth line and – again – beautifully layered soundscapes and pads on the background. After that, "qq6" tops this off with more of the energetic percussion, only a much darker, meaner synth to finish it off.

Altogether, it’s safe to say that T_st have made quite the first impression with a solid EP, suited for various moments on the dance floors.

ALiVE Recordings is a label run by Tom Budden.  It's dedicated to House music, ALiVE has a back catalogue of artists which include Leftwing & Kody, Shadow Child, Shall Ocin, Waifs & Strays, Yousef, Cera Alba and many others of a similar calibre. 

De Man Zonder Schaduw aka Man With No Shadow is a Dutch producer who started his DJ career throwing infamous GZG parties, which lead to a residency at the globally recognised Sensation where he played to festival sized crowds at arena events.  This new release features original material from him, follows previous EP’s on ALiVE, many will recognise from his seminal releases on Shinedoe’s label Intacto Records. 

The first track on the release titled “Black Tulip” is our Debut Transmission and has thick bass stabs, snare rolls and rising pads that build with energy until the tracks main bassline hits with devastating force. Complimented with a simple melody synth it’s not long before the bass stabs return and this dancefloor focused monster hits its crescendo.

Canadian label Eternal Drive makes a statement before a well earned break following a string of releases featuring artists like Audio Injection, Flug, Alex Bau, Subjected, Brendon Moeller and Luis Flores amongst many others.

Making their debut by way of collaboration on the labels fourteenth release are Ninna V from Portugal and Virulent in the USA. Solo productions on the likes of Illegal Alien, Naked Lunch, !Organism, Rheostatus and Ill Bomb Records to name a few, have put these two firmly on the map.

Label boss Jay Zoney turns his hand and puts in another top quality remix as the fourth track adding the fourth dimension to this outstanding package.

Selected for this DT:Premiere we have Underground Liberation owner Ritzi Lee, a highly respected icon of Dutch Techno, who appears fresh off the back of a release for Bas Mooy’s Mord imprint. Other releases with Gary Beck’s Bek Audio, Tommy Four Seven’s 47, Labrynth and Planet Rhythm show his pedigree as he turns in a bolshy and hypnotic rework of the lead track called “Grey”.

A modest perfectionist at heart, he translates his passion and drive into outspoken and highly versatile DJ-sets. Whether it’s opening deep and warm,closing rough and edgy, a small crowd or large setting Invite treats every gig with the same amount of diligence and respect. When given carte blanche and an extended timeslot, something he much prefers, Invite is able to move a crowd like few others can.

His career has seen him perform at numerous events including  Awakenings, Time Warp, festivals such as Awakefest, Free Your Mind and venues like Trouw, Paradiso and Doornroosje, on multiple occasions alongside the likes of Surgeon, Dave Clarke, Ben Sims and Jeff Mills. A couple of months after the release of Contemporary Spaces, four of Abstract Division’s tracks get remixed. And who better suited for the job than label residents Stefan Vincent and Deepbass & Ness, and Dynamic Reflection debutants Tensal and Lewis Fautzi. 

Tensal has reshaped The Hunt into a powerful club-banger. The original synth is still present, although heavily processed by a number of echoes and reverbs. That, backed up by numerous noises going on in the background, makes it a Hunting piece of music indeed.  

Deepbass and Ness have taken Passenger for their account and transformed it into something of their own, inimitable sound. Deep and subby kicks, complemented with complex soundscapes.  

Lewis Fautzi’s version of Encounter is clearly deeper than the original. The impellent synth and matching percussion, make it a fascinating trip to listen to.

Stefan Vincent has formed Glide the original EP’s soundscape intro into a beautiful piece of breakbeat-techno. And with that, he has provided the perfect outro for this remix-EP. 

For all the WAV and MP3 heads, there’s a digital bonus version of The Hunt included as well. This one is provided by Dutch youngster Haeken, who turned it  into a hypnotic loop with an authentic old school feel to it.

The Nursery’s seventh release sees another newcomer: it’s Violent. A truly promising DJ and producer from Poland, rapidly making a name for himself as a pusher of rough, breakbeat induced techno. Stressful Environment contributes to that persona. It is a fierce composition of peak time tracks, that at times hint towards industrial, while preserving a certain melancholy. It is largely this combination that makes these tracks complement each other so well. The muscular foundation gives them their power; an enlightening fragility keeps them from becoming mere stompers. With that, Violent has put together an impressive piece of contemporary techno that will most likely see the inside of many clubs in the months to come. The ‘Stressful Environment EP’ is bound to make the name Violent stick around for a while.

Now in its second decade, with a steady stream of the most forward thinking and cutting edge techno productions, Drumcode has one of the biggest selections of releases from industry heavy hitters, whilst not forgetting its future by bringing the newest talented producers into the limelight, where Layton Giordani is now a name firmly within that line up.

The New York born, but now EU based producer first had recognition back in 2014, and his debut release came via Drumcode with his track “Rivington” on the A-Sides Vol5 compilation in 2016.

Full force into 2017, Drumcode has announced the release of Layton’s debut album with “Where It Begins” this February. Consisting of 12 original tracks, the album packs a punch when it comes to no-nonsense techno. Successfully weaving relentless drums and catchy vocal hooks into a selection of thick, brooding, atmospheric tracks.

Teasing us with a sample, Drumcode has released “Good Violence” – thumping from the get-go in true Drumcode fashion, this track is a pure dance floor destroyer. Laced in some heavy low end power, slapping percussion and a hypnotic synth pad to build up that late night tension just right.
