Abstract Division returns with the second addition to their ‘Form and Function’ series on Dynamic Reflection. Similar to the first release, Part II also features two original tracks and two remixes, this time around by none other than Delta Funktionen and Ben Sims.

Kicking off the EP is the original version of ‘Floating Point’, which vividly sets the stage for all that follows. Firmly rooted in contemporary techno Abstract Division unveils a prime example of a record that succeeds at finding the precise balance between a modern stripped, glooming sound and the spacey hihat and bell-driven touches of old. Elegant and deadly effective stomping funk from start to finish is the result. Dancefloor hypnosis guaranteed!

Delta Funktionen presents his take on ‘Floating Point’ and delivers a stunning remix, exhibiting his skill at extracting the perfect elements and shaping something both instantly recognizable, yet powerfully contrasting from them. The result is a constantly moving track, rich in textures and subtle interplaying sounds. Ideally suited as an early drop in a peaktime set or alternatively as a special treat at the end of a dubby journey. Pure class.

Adding even more value to this already impressive EP is one of techno’s finest. Taking on ‘Shifted Reality’ from the first release in the ‘Form and Function’ series, Ben Sims unleashes an absolute pounder. In trademark Sims fashion the drive put down by this remix is simply relentless, leaving the original to be neatly spotted in those rare moments of almost rewarding calm. Brilliantly uncomplicated, raw techno for those looking to properly tear a venue to pieces.

Sealing the deal is Abstract Division’s electronica piece ‘Magnetic Field’. A rare, introvert piece of music that wouldn’t have been out of place on a great movie or videogame soundtrack. Entrancing, warping drones, every now and then accented by distant sounds of an approaching battle or impending doom. Aiming to open or end with something out of the ordinary? Look no further.

‘Form and Function’ Part II picks up where Part I left off and does so perfectly. With outstanding remixes from Delta Funktionen and Ben Sims and two equally great, carefully crafted original tracks by Abstract Division the bar set for Part III is a high one indeed. Luckily however, Dynamic Reflection doesn’t know how to aim low.

Sometimes one and one are greater than the sum of their parts: Abstract Division is glaring proof. The long-running Techno project is the symbiotic collaboration of artists Paul Boex and Dave Miller, who having met through a serendipitous booking, are now a b2b force to be reckoned with. Responsible for a spate of electronic gems in recent years, they’re also at the helm of Dynamic Reflection and The Nursery, with their DECODE party series currently on ice. Here, the spirit of their Rotterdam parties lives on with Bassiani Podcast 108: a brooding, mystical and labyrinthine mix of gritty, razor-sharp sounds.

The title track 'Tides Indefinite' kicks the EP off with its deceptively simple synth rise and fall before an archetypal Asymmetric track in the shape of 'Cartesian Form'. Next up is a darker tale in the form of 'Unrest' which pitches driving layered bass cycles against a constantly moving 909 backdrop. When two musicians intensively work together for a period of time, at some point the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. If Paul Boex and Dave Miller hadn’t already reached that status under their Abstract Division moniker, they certainly have now, with the release of Midnight Ensemble, their first full length album.

Those who have followed the duo since their early days of playing dj-sets together, know that it’s hard to define their style anywhere beyond techno or even electronic music, as it is ever evolving and always dependent on the time of the day or night. When listening to this album, the resemblance between their unpredictable selection behind the decks and the eclectic range of subgenres on this album is more obvious than ever before.

Midnight Ensemble could be interpreted as an ode to nightlife; a reminiscence of all that happens between dusk and dawn, captured and compressed into about one hour of music. An hour in which they so delicately time their changing of styles and tempos, always reading the room and always being one step ahead of the crowd.

This album is a reflection of that skill, starting its journey with soothing, mood-setting ambient, followed by timeless pieces of Detroit and dubtechno. A daring electro cut provide a refreshing break from the four to the floor tradition, only to be followed by the stripped down sound the duo is so comfortable with.

The final minutes consist of experimental breaks, one last banger to pull out the last bits of energy that is left and a beautiful outro, which concludes the all-nighter vibe. There are no open endings, it doesn’t make you want to stay in the dark forever. Rather it makes you want to close your eyes one last time before walking outside to see the sun come up again before going home, overwhelmed and satisfied.

Regis and Function's first mix in over 10 years is a unique paean to Silent Servant, heavy on unreleased material.

When it came time for RA to compile our Albums of the 2010s, one record with a tauntingly limited availability of 500 copies was never in doubt: Sandwell District's era-defining 'Feed-Forward'. Encompassing Karl O'Connor (Regis), Peter Sutton (Female), David Sumner (Function) and Juan Mendez (Silent Servant), Sandwell District had the underground in a vice grip for over a decade.

The collective imploded in 2013, with Sumner and O'Connor's relationship appearing beyond repair. And yet, an unlikely second phase is here, featuring imminent comeback LP 'End Beginnings' and their return to the RA Podcast after 16 years. In 2023, the trio of Function, Regis and Silent Servant had been performing and laying down new material before the latter's shock death last January. It's in the shadow of loss that this unique mix was forged.

Founded in 2002 as a spiritual sister to seminal Downwards, Sandwell truly began to hit its straps in the late '00s, as shadow-stalking cuts sliced through clubland orthodoxy like a switchblade. In parallel, the label's artwork—a noir recombination of Burroughs cut-ups, DIY zines and arthouse amour that Silent Servant made his own—helped fortify a movement which placed an aesthetic premium on grit, grain and sadism.

By the early 2010s, this fixation on the dark arts had utterly permeated the mood inside techno's masonic temples. Labels like Blackest Ever Black, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Avian and Modern Love were in their pomp, razorwire legends like Severed Heads and Chris & Cosey benefited from second winds, and it was briefly a jailable offence to not have a press photo in black and white. 'Feed-Forward' was the exceptional coronating statement.

RA.978 features a stack of unheard recordings from each of the trio, as well as close allies Stefanie Parnow and Tropic of Cancer, while also gathering many of Silent Servant's all-time favourite songs, including Psychic TV, Grace Jones and Galaxie 500. It's a strikingly vulnerable listen, one without many parallels on the Podcast. We're glad to run it. – Gabriel Szatan
