DEAS has not gone unnoticed and kept popping up in Abstract Division’s playlists. It is therefore a real pleasure to have him on board at the Nursery. His “Perception EP” explores multiple disciplines within the techno spectrum. Grooving, hypnotizing, relieving and melancholic are distinctive keywords within this five track EP.

On various levels DEAS knows exactly to get a grip on your attention and delivers what a proper techno release should be all about.

Following 2020’s ‘Mirror Man’ LP on Radio Slave’s Rekids, Detroit pioneer Robert Hood returns to the label with a four-track EP of his trailblazing minimal techno. Leading the release, ‘Chroma Light’ opens with cinematic pads and pounding 4/4 patterns as twisted synthesis modulates throughout for a striking start. Followed by ‘The Majestic (Deeper Edit)’, with rattling percussion and fiercely relentless stabs, Hood shows his intent in creating propulsive, dancefloor focussed cuts across the EP.

On the flip, ‘The Majestic’ takes the B1 spot, expanding on the previous track with wild synths and his signature machine-like drums before ‘Ultrasonic Room’ closes out the release with eerie atmospherics and an underlying hypnotic pulse taking centre stage.

A founding member of Underground Resistance alongside Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, Robert Hood is one of techno’s originators, with his decorated career spanning three decades across labels like Tresor, Peacefrog, Music Man Records, and of course, his own M Plant.

Take a look over Ashley Burchett’s back catalogue and you’ll find the Greater London resident has played an understated yet influential role in purporting British techno. Fifteen years ago Burchett’s prevailing Ø [Phase] project debuted on Sheree Rashit and Steve Bicknell’s Cosmic Recordings before providing Cosmic ID with its final record in 2002, and since 2007 Burchett's helped mould and define the sound of Token by becoming the label’s marquee artist.

In 2013 the Belgian imprint finally coaxed the debut album from Ø [Phase], Frames Of Reference, described in Tony Naylor’s 4/5 review for Resident Advisor as, “a techno album of real imagination and depth that, when it needs to be, is brutally functional.” Almost two years since its release Ø [Phase] is back with Alone In Time?, his second studio album which adds to the continuous slew of unrivalled long players Token has put out of late. Token spreads the 11-tracks on Alone In Time? across three heavy weight discs, and the music further demonstrates Burchett’s deft skill in linear arrangements shaped to fit the warehouse frame, while painting a colourful, Detroit influenced side to his productions yet to really be heard to this extent before.

This uncharted sound of Ø [Phase] can be found in tracks like “Remote”, the album’s homage to electro, to the jittery, alien grooves of “Spacialize”, “Mo_del” and “Nep-tune”. There’s big room domination on productions like “Orbitron” and “R-Mash”, while the album’s title-track is a journey through Burchett’s conceptual references to cosmology, time and isolation. Burchett explains, "it was always an intention to make another album and now just felt like the right time. Life moves on, we change and grow. As lessons get learned and ideas form, the desire to express them gradually manifests."

Furthermore, Burchett adds, “Frames Of Reference was about overcoming personal struggles and challenges, while Alone In Time? is more forward facing.” With an extensive back catalogue in his wake, Ø [Phase] has become a relied source for the discerning techno DJ and these new, expertly crafted club cuts add to his ever-expanding pool of productions for selectors to choose from, and it’s clear, if the bouncing rhythm of “Blind Eye” and orchestral epic of “The Maze” is anything to go by, Ø [Phase] isn’t only head strong, but standing tall.

After a 5-year hiatus, Damage Music Berlin is back with label-head Alexander Kowalski’s first release since his last full-length record „Cycles“ on Mord in May 2018. „The Path“ EP features 3 swirling, muddy techno tracks which encapsulate the spirit of the artist’s Berlin studio where they were produced, and amplify to big room techno. Making use of his strong-headed percussion work, Alexander Kowalski either injects full-throttle driving muscle, like in title track „The Path“, marks the pace for a deeper trip with „Moment of Knowledge“, or dims it down to a somber mood in the B2 „Thoughts of a Dying Atheist“. Non-Series head Psyk signs his take on title track „The Path“ with a remix that showcases the Spanish producer’s mastery in loopy, hypnotic techno.
