Recorded live in the studio using only a PIN Electronics Portabella synthesiser and a Roland TR-909 drum machine direct to DAT tape.

Slagmann, a new collaboration between producer Talismann and music ensemble Slagwerk Den Haag. For this live interpretation of their new album KRYSALIS, they join forces with visual artist Heleen Blanken. The outcome is an adventurous synthesis of hypnotizing rhythm patterns, organic soundscapes and captivating scenography – or, as the artists themselves like to call it, a “ritualistic experience.”

Slagmann is an initiative that arose from a shared curiosity for innovative sounds. Slagmann worked on this genre-crossing album. Talismann produced the album exploring the analogue set of instruments from Slagwerk Den Haag as a soundbank. Sometimes dreamy and dark, euphoric and explosive at other times, this mesmerizing cross-pollination between ritualistic percussion and drum machines will lure you into the murkiest depths of electronica and classical minimal music. The album has fourteen phases and will be releasedon Talismann Records.

For the visual identity of KRYSALIS and the scenography of the live show, Slagmann works together with visual artist Heleen Blanken. Fascinated by the perfection of nature, she has created a show where the chrysalis (the pop in which a caterpillar turns into a butterfly) becomes a symbol for transformation.

Blanken not only uses video images for her rhythmical light show, she also makes use of a hanging sculpture and NAP framework software that was especially designed for KRYSALIS. Together with the three musicians and their remarkable collection of percussive instruments the aim is to take the crowd along on a collective experience.

Kangding Ray consistently fascinates the scene with his unique style that is bridging the dance floor and abstract electronic composition, talking equally to the mind and the body. His first record for Figure spans exactly that arc, introducing to the label something both for headphones as it is built for the big clubs.

The tracks on X13 feel as intimate as the artist‘s work on other long players but are focused clearly on impacting the physical realm. Teeming with ideas, he first lets his modular synths sway and turn loosely before switching it to a more bassy and propulsive approach on the flip. Balancing cinematic strings against stepping rhythms, the EP‘s closing track is another prime example of this producer‘s skill to craft something which holds up as an abstract piece of art as much as it does yield a lot of emotional tension.

Dormancy is a mesh machine-like tweaks and dramatic themes that may have been inert until Eddie Hales songcraft forces it to stagger and sway with the synthetic rhythm. The title track begins with breathy synths and builds up its momentum with the bouncing beat. Impulses is a dramatic dance floor track, fencing chords tangle with the rhythm that pulses constantly. Bustling and elastic sound of Variant 1 evokes the body to move along its excitable groove. The tensile theme of JU-6 never looses its cools with the stagger drums. Jon Hesters remix of Dormancy keeps the overall theme but adding an old school approach as the track builds up with creamy synths juxtaposed with the clangy percussion.
