That Day

This documentary focuses on the history of the Kynoch's munition factory that was based in Arklow Co. Wicklow between 1895-1918. The factory was one of the largest factories ever based in the town and more than 3000 people worked there. It produced explosives such as gun-cotton, nitro-glycerin and cordite and was also a key producer of munitions during World War I.

In September 1917 a huge explosion occurred in the factory, killing 27 people and leaving just a crater behind. 2017 marks the centenary anniversary of this event, which is said to be one of the most famous events in Arklow history. The exact cause of the explosion is one of biggest mysteries the factory has left behind, as it remains inconclusive to this day. This documentary takes a closer look into the possible causes of the explosion.

It firstly delves into the background of the history of the factory before focusing on the night of the explosion. During the documentary I spoke to local historian Jim Rees and local Kynoch's enthusiast Michael Fitzgerald. Both men give a deeper insight into how the factory came about and the importance the factory had to the town, before giving their opinions on what they believe happened on the night of the explosion. They also discuss the importance of commemorating the centenary year and what this reflection period will mean to them.
