SPIRITUAL OBJECTS RADIO EPISODE 11 W/ PHILIP SHERBURNE

2022 kicks off with a mix by long time dear friend and Lullabies For Insomniacs mastermind Izabel (@lullabiesforinsomniacs) who recorded the mix live in Melbourne outdoors during a Wax'O Paradiso event. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hey Izabel, nice to have you kicking off the mix series in this new year. You're in sunny Australia now but before that you'd been living in Europe for quite some years. What made you decide to move back?

IZ: Europe was home for almost 7 years, I left Australia in my early 20’s thinking I would be away for some months but fell in love in Amsterdam and spent years living in the city. In 2018, I moved to Berlin where I lived for a year, I found inspiration through all walks and was surrounded by great crew but grew tired of life in the big smoke. I wanted new challenges and yearned to be amongst nature, so left the city and travelled south to the Atlantic where I spent time in France, Spain and Portugal before heading to Corsica. I slept in a tent or stayed with friends and got on by doing seasonal work. I had not been back to Australia to see family and friends for many moons and was homesick, so decided to make my way across the Indian Ocean. Australia had heavy border restrictions, so plans to return were slow.

MFM: Your label Lullabies For Insomniacs had some busy times from 2016 to around 2019, after that it got more quiet and also the format shifted from vinyl to digital and cassette. What can you tell about this transition?

IZ: The transition happened naturally, I was traveling a lot which effected the label and my creative output. The tapes from Unearth Noise and Baldruin are recordings that we had been sitting on for some time but for various reasons kept delaying release. We decided to bring them out on tape as the music was better suited to this format. My sound world has been heavily inspired by the DIY music and tape scenes of Amsterdam and Berlin in the 80’s and there are great tape labels around today that were also motivating, my friend Etkin’s label ‘Kinship’ is one of these.

MFM: And now that you're settled in Australia again, what are your thoughts and plans with the label and music? Did the past 2/3 years change your perspective/vision?

IZ: Visions and inspirations come and go, some solidify and take root while others are fleeting in dream form. My focus has certainly changed as I devote more time to learning new skills and pursuing other crafts like furniture design, ceramics and writing. The music scene here in Melbourne is thriving, there are a lot of great artists and as I was
away for so long there is much to discover.

MFM: What can you say about the set/mix? Perhaps you can describe the setting it was recorded in?

IZ: The records I packed were chosen while isolating at home, this setting could not be more different to the glorious Sunday afternoon on the lawns at the Wax’o event. I played before OK EG who did a live set to celebrate their new record released as the debut on the Wax’o imprint. It was the second time I had the pleasure hearing them perform, their set made way for a great night. I thought a lot about European winter whilst making selections, I do miss spending the end of the year wrapped warm in Winters caress. These reflections and the recent passing of someone close to the family has brought me into a state of deep
introspect these last weeks, the session is both celebratory of life and a lament to lost life. This mix is a recording from the first hour, the second hour I played some psych, dub and percussive jams. 

MFM: Any plans, wishes or anything else for the near future that you'd like to share maybe?

IZ: At the moment I am taking each day as it arrives and am happy to continue on a journey learning and growing and enjoying time with family and friends. In February I will start a little party series in Melbourne with my friend Martha called Dub Cake. All the while my dream to move sea or country side lingers.

Another 8760 hours have passed yet again, another full lap around the sun, another new year upon us... And what comes with this new year, for I know not, nor do I want to. It is, although a good time to realign, reassess, reevaluate, and appreciate the opportunity to do so. Our sound-tracker for this sectional period is from all the way in Ukraine, and he goes by the name of Sid-Nine aka Anton Potieriaiko. 

I don’t know much about Sid, just that he’s a young guy with exceptional musical taste, an amazing result of what this series has evolved into. Sid sent me some mixes a few months ago, and very kindly asked if he could contribute. After listening to them, I hurriedly replied with a big fat ‘yes please!’, and here we are. It fills me with immense pride that this series has reached the other side of the world and given someone the motivation to truly dive deep into their own existence and produce something so pure. Especially when your country is forcibly participating in a war that shouldn’t be happening. 

This has been an absolute pleasure to listen to over and over for the past few weeks, I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get sick of this mix. The talent that Sid puts on display in this two-hour stint is nothing short of amazing, each arch so perfectly placed, each mix so perfectly executed, each twist so rich, each turn so precise. The sheer wealth of musical knowledge intertwined throughout the mix is astounding, all rolled up in ethereal euphoria and soaked in rhythm overnight. Progressively paced-out house music, steeped street soul, splinters of future pop, deep space synth, milk bar ambient folk, converging harmoniously to create something magical. This kid truly gets it, and I know damn well he will use these powers for good. Sit on the couch, and reach for the lasers.

Наш саунд-трекер для цього розділового періоду – з усієї України, і його звуть Сід-Найн, він же Антон Потеряйко.

Я мало знаю про Сіда, лише те, що він молодий хлопець із винятковим музичним смаком, дивовижний результат того, у що перетворився цей серіал. Кілька місяців тому Сід надіслав мені кілька міксів і дуже люб’язно попросив, чи може він зробити свій внесок. Вислухавши їх, я поспішно відповів великим «так, будь ласка!», і ось ми тут. Мене сповнює величезна гордість, що ця серія досягла іншого кінця світу і дала комусь мотивацію по-справжньому зануритися у власне існування та створити щось таке чисте. Особливо, коли ваша країна вимушено бере участь у війні, якої не повинно бути.

Це було справжнє задоволення слухати знову і знову протягом останніх кількох тижнів, я чесно кажучи, не думаю, що мені коли-небудь набридне цей мікс. Талант, який Сід демонструє в цьому двогодинному виступі, не що інше, як дивовижний, кожна арка настільки ідеально розміщена, кожен мікс настільки ідеально виконаний, кожен поворот такий насичений, кожен поворот такий точний. Величезне багатство музичних знань, переплетених у всьому міксі, вражає, усе згорнуте в ефірну ейфорію та просякнуте ритмом протягом ночі. Прогресивна хаус-музика, стріт-соул, уламки майбутньої поп-музики, глибокий космічний синтезатор, ембієнт-фолк молочного бару, які гармонійно зливаються, створюючи щось чарівне. Цей хлопець справді це розуміє, і я чудово знаю, що він використає ці здібності назавжди. Сядьте на диван і потягніться до лазерів.

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

As the world tosses and turns, continuously coping with loss and burns, we continue to take and churn. It’s a full-time job living inside of a bubble, inside of a bubble, but we do it well, and boy is it nice here. Let’s take a moment and appreciate the space we have created for ourselves and the people that make that possible, one of those people for me is our next guest, Maryos Syawish, one half of Sleep D, f.k.a Sleepy Dino, and one of the founding member’s of Butter Sessions Records. 



I think the best place to start with Maryos is at the beginning, the beginning being the one love forums (tip of the hat;)) "frAnk" (cannot disclose real name due to legal issues) as he was called used to trawl the forums like he was Tank from the matrix, collecting every bit of vital information (I.e peak 08 -10 bangers), which would ultimately set him on his path to musical enlightenment and thus creating the foundations of the omnipresent ‘Butter Sessions’. Bringing underground Australian electronic music not only into the present but pushing it forward into the future. Where we used to follow, we now lead. Watching Maryos go from strength to strength over the last 15 years has been nothing short of inspirational, the amount of work Maryos and Corey (the other member of Sleep D/Butter sessions) have put into refining their craft and creating something truly amazing. Butter Sessions has been such an incredible platform for the Australian scene, carving out a place for all of us to call home, championing the local scene on a worldwide stage. They’ve come a long way from train-wrecking mixes at miss libertines all those years ago. Amazingly, Maryos has stayed humble this whole time, weird I know, but I’ve tested it time and time again. In an effort to fully embody the idea of being an artist, Maryos sunk himself into the graphical element in a heavy way, through pure ‘fuck around and find out’ he has established his own way of doing things via album artwork, poster design, logo development, and even sculpture work, and no one should be surprised that his work is beyond exceptional (I know sweet fuck all about art, but I do know what I like). Maryos’ star will continue to shine bright for many years to come and I cannot wait to see all the multifaceted fruitions. 



Keeping with the theme of ‘exceptional constructs of site and sound’ Maryos has delivered an interstellar submission. Fully embracing his middle eastern roots through a modern bypass and technical finesse, producing something that truly taps straight into the soul. Layers upon layers of perfectly structured sonic explorations, laced with haunting vocals and rhythm-based static, resulting in this beautifully melancholic love letter from the other side of the world. The mix dips and trip’s in and out of consciousness via waves of absolute hypnotism to put you under, then come the big hits from reality-driven synths to bring you back up for air. Maryos has created something truly powerful and moving here and it’s an honour to be able to bring this into the world. This is the point you take the red pill (not the one with the Mitsubishi logo on it).

E2E: What environment or context did you have in mind when recording the mix?

I noticed that all the Ear 2 Ear mixes had a particular theme so before I was even asked to contribute to the series, I had a particular theme in mind for it - if I ever got asked to contribute that is. The theme I chose was music for stargazing. Which brings me back memories to some of the most special and spiritual experiences I've had with my closest friends. I wanted to create a mix of music that suited the environment we found ourselves in. A group of us alone, set on a beach with the ocean washing the sand as we lay there staring into the open sky. The stars twinkling as the air sung in the background, all of us in a complete state of relaxation, losing all sense of self, transcending and connecting as one, with each other and with the earth itself.

E2E: Tell us a bit about your new Body Corp alias, have you got any new work coming up?

Body Corp is I guess an outlet for more electronic/dance music that I write. I’m currently working on finishing another 2 EPs mainly and always just working on new tracks, especially during this time while there’s more of it. One of the EPs is a follow up to the first release with Soothsayer and the other is in its early stages and a bit more relaxed, less for the dance floor and more for listening at home. That one is a work in progress so we’ll see where it goes.. シ
