At some point in 2013, Friendly Fires, Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J Fairplay (aka The Asphodells), convened in an east London pub to discuss collaborating on new music together. The plan was to produce music that came from a place outside of their respective usual musical styles - a loose, open-ended process embarked upon for the pure joy of experimentation and collaboration rather than a specific end goal.

The collaboration came on the back of two hugely successful Friendly Fires albums – 2008’s debut Friendly Fires and 2011’s follow up Pala – and an acclaimed debut album from The Asphodells in 2013’s Ruled By Passion Destroyed By Lust, the latest in a long line of classic releases from Andrew Weatherall’s own Rotters Golf Club label.

Recording took place between Weatherall’s Shoreditch studio, The Bunker, and Friendly Fires frontman Ed Macfarlane’s basement studio just a short stroll down the road in Farringdon, using a desk that once belonged to influential German producer Konrad ‘Conny’ Plank to mix the tracks.

The result is ‘Before Your Eyes’ and ‘Velo’ - two brand new tracks that take close to ten minutes each to reveal their full hypnotic glory. The tracks will be released as a AA-sided single on 12” and download and will be the inaugural release on Friendly Fires’ own Telophase label.

Once again, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes Innervisions to the airwaves with a mix from Kristian Beyer, one half of the irrepressible, in vogue duo, Âme. Since 2003, German duo Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann have produced music under the alias Âme, combining floor-filling tunes with musical elements that go beyond the usual formula of house and techno. Their single "Rej" became a global club hit in 2006 and the duo has been travelling the world and playing at every major club and festival ever since. If that wasn't enough, along with their buddy Dixon, they also run the Innervisions label, currently one of the most sought-after names in contemporary house. Lately Wiedemann has taken to playing solo live as Âme, while Beyer deejays under the same alias. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Kristian has mixed a show featuring some of his favourite tracks from the Innervisions archive.

The plot thickens, who is Theo Walbeck?? But maybe its not that important, after all the music is the key figure and speaks for itself. This is Theo’s follow up to “Freek Tool” which was one of Disclosures most played tracks in 2016 and goes down a similar path. In our humble opinion this is an even stronger track and something that will is just waiting to get some heavy isolator action. Someone 2night got that dark and vintage warehouse feel mixed up with some soulful cut up vocals and lush strings that is just perfect to drop at peak hour. Those rumbling drums will cause some serious damage…believe dat!

Sun Scope, wow what a beautiful piece of music, I'm getting goose bumps listening right now. Deep Melodica man, it flows and grows without getting all complex. This being released right at the tail of 2017 is a game changer in my favorite track of the year. What comes out of Timm Sures and Richard Hampson Camp only can only be described as remarkable. These guys completely work for the love of music. "And to possibly pay for a trip to the White Isle once a year". as Timm put it to me once. Is It Balearic....? ain't just Balearic they're almost punk in their attitude, in the sense there's no big promotional campaign beforehand. The records they put out sell themselves.  Well now here is the link to have a listen to the 5th track on the A side of Sun Scope the ep, Sun Scope.

Sun Scope is a soundtrack to a dreamlike journey through nature. The A side represents morning until dusk. The B side, midnight until dawn. Maricopa drops a beautifully evocative album of mellow electronica on IIB.

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, eclectics return with a brace of winter warmers, courtesy of James Rod, both of which are packing enough heat to keep us cosy until the clocks go forward. 

Boarder Pass is cosmic disco with a casual nod to Norway in the loose-limbed stomp as the bass and drums rise and fall into place with calm confidence. 

The synth sound is so warm it's like they've been rendered in pastels by a man in a sweater by an open fire. There's no soporific after effect though, the high arpeggios and throbbing bass see to that. This tune is headed for the dance floor, it's just sorting out the underfloor heating first. 

"Back to Casiopea" shares similar feel, but with the urgency turned up. Shards of guitar ricochet off the glacier walls provided by the synths, which give us a structure that's familiar yet unknown - like finding an outtake of Patrick Cowley producing Tangerine Dream or digging out an hitherto unseen John Carpenter project and realising that it has a previously unheard soundtrack to kill for. 

In fact, Cowley and Carpenter are key touchstones. There's a live feel to these tracks that accentuates the human element. This may be machine music on first reading, but it oozes soul, bleeds spirit, and that comes from a composer who understands perfectly how to place himself at the centre of it all. -Jah Shabby

JAMES ROD - Boarder Pass Clip

"Night Drive" with its robotic beat, syncopated bass and repetitive pop vocals drenched in reverb is reminiscent of these treasured 12” extended mixes found on the b-sides of your favourite techno pop band of the 80’s. You know the ones carved by Ship Pettibone and the likes and where you didn’t need to suffer the emo chorus of the original.

Club Bizarre are closing the EP with their own hypnotic take on this track. All bouncing bass and trippy synth sequences, their remix feels more techno but somehow manage to bring out the cinematic and romantic sides of the original.

John Talabot and Axel Boman teamed up in 2017 for their R&S debut ’The Night Land’ where they got to flex their creative muscles over eight tracks of rich synth jams.  

The two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, but as Pitchfork expressed in their glowing review “Their collective output doesn’t sound much like either’s work; it doesn’t even necessarily reflect the thin, convex sliver where their interests overlap. Instead, they’ve hit upon something new.”

This new sound also proved to be a hit with the likes of Mojo, Phonica, XLR8R, Self Titled and DJ Mag all including it their annual best of lists.

The artists have now handpicked four artists to create their own vision of the Talaboman sound.  
Superpitcher, Samo DJ, Luke Slater under his L.B. Dub Corp alias and Powder have all seriously delivered the goods.

Having previously released on a wealth of labels including Marco Dionigi's Quantistic division and mighty Dutch imprint Bordello a Parigi (the latter in cahoots with legendary producer Alexander Robotnick), it would be fair to say that Tulioxi is one of the rising stars of contemporary cosmic disco. Further evidence to back up this theory can be found on the Italian producer's latest EP, in the rubbery bass, wild electronics and mind-altering effects of Baldelli-esque opener "The Outside" especially.

The fourth release of Selva Discos is one that has been bursting audiences into flames for a good while. Barbatuques, a well-known Brazilian group of body percussionists, adapted "Baianá" back in 2005 (first released on the "O Seguinte É Esse" album) and since then it became a staple of their concerts, getting crazy reactions from the children to the elder, being featured on soundtracks and sampled by trap duo Tropkillaz. The original is a modern folk song from Bahia composed by Maria do Carmo Barbosa, but it was the mouth harp sound and the stomping beat on the Barbatuques' arrangement that imprinted its trademark sound - like the first lightning strikes before the storm.

A couple of years ago, Jan Schulte, the german producer known for his taste for tropical drums (and also for using a few different aliases), heard the song and decided to add an extra punch to it for his DJ sets: more drums, taken from a library record of "drumdrops" (hence the title). In his appearance at 2017's Dekmantel Boiler Room stage as Bufiman, he dropped it to the crowd's awe, and it's been like that wherever its played - believe it, it's been tested all around.

So now for the first time "Baianá" is issued on vinyl. It marks the second volume of the BRASINGLES series, a new series on Selva Discos dedicated to releasing loud 12" singles with the original song on the A side and a rework on the B side, to please both the DJ and the listener.

or have links with Nein. Tronik Youth's 'techno but not techno' imprint has called in the services of new talent from Bruges
Pierre Vue, AKA Connor and gone one stage further by calling in Mexico based Armando Ramirez also known as Horreur to reconfigure.
The result is an epic dancefloor destroyer which is dark as hell and full of fire, filth and fury. A low end which would rattle windows and an unrelenting rolling bass which typifies the sound of Nein. Stratos is the sound of two young producers literally reaching for the sky. Keep a close eye on both of these producers. 
If their recent output is anything to go by, the net 12 months will see them both go stratospheric.

While Chicago and Detroit get all the plaudits for creating house and techno, there were other cities which created a similar vibe, a similar sound and a similar aesthetic and round about the same time too. Ghent and Brussels spearheaded the often overlookedsound of New Beat, a slower, more gnarly version of Acid House. Heavily Analogue and sample heavy. 
It is this sound which Credit 00 emulates to great effect with his remix of 'Cashminus'- More Satisfaction. 
Slow and deliberate breakbeats hold together a greasy metamorphic bassline which filters between the top and low end. Nasty string sounding synths drift over the top and form an EBM monster which will daze and confuse as well as delight.
More Satisfaction could just as easily be a lost B side from an XL Record played at the wrong speed from 1987as it could be from today. The Rat Life boss more than does justice adding another record to the burgeoning catalogue of new EBM records. This is well worth your time.
