In April 2020, Ecoutes au vert launched the mix series Music for Indoors. 

At Covid-19's Pandemic start, we asked many great DJs, record collectors & musicians to record a mix, taking the counterpoint of what was mostly happening during that period, namely Livestreams. 

We told the artists the mix can be anything the name “Music for Indoors” inspired them to & any kind of music they like. They were also encouraged to step away from what they would usually play in front of an audience or showcase a secret facet of their music tastes.

By doing so we wanted to contribute to that weird confinement period with something more thoughtful than a Livestream, something more precious, that will possibly last the test of time.
 
The mixes received are very good and we are extremely glad to bring all this fantastic music to you. A big thanks to all the DJs, record collectors and musicians involved.  

These mixes will stand as a capsule of the times that these people lived since March 2020. If you listen closely, you will hear, here and there, messages and ideas of possible escapes, echoing one way or another, that very particular defining moment we lived through. 

Who knows when this pandemic will be really over and if we will have to learn to live with Covid forever... 

Ecoutes au vert's (Listening in the green) "Music for Indoors" Guest Mix Series continues, mainly active in the fall/winter/springtime of each year, taking a lovely break in the summertime. :)

Mix of the Week #514: LOVE APE - Deep Explorations

Antonio Lubrano, a seasoned radio sound engineer who embarked on his musical journey at the young age of 15 and became a resident DJ at prominent city clubs by the age of 18, has consistently harbored a passion for diverse non-commercial music. His DJ sets reflect a deliberate effort to introduce lesser-known sounds, injecting an element of unpredictability. Renowned as a "vinyl enthusiast" within the industry, Antonio has, in recent years, delved into the world of collecting rare records, sourcing gems from the Italian and European underground scenes spanning the 70s, 80s, and even the 90s—acquiring them through both online platforms and eclectic flea markets.

In 2022 Antonio, alongside collaborator Daniele Giustra, proudly co-founded "Disco Tic." This innovative project showcases the art of back-to-back performances exclusively on vinyl, with a focus on 45s featuring the distinctive Italo-disco sound. The duo has given life to a vibrant SoundCloud channel under the same name, featuring meticulously curated mixtapes crafted by DJs and selectors from across the globe. This platform serves as a testament to their commitment to promoting and preserving the rich legacy of underground music.

Story of the MIXXXXX - Forgotten Vinyls
„When are you going to take the rest of your records with you?“ my dad kept asking me for 18 years (since 2006). As a child growing up in the bavarian countryside I discovered 80s music through my very good friend and dj „Electronic Biets“. His strong passion for all kinds of music, led him to a mix of I-F „live in new york“ from 2001. He passed it on to me when I was 18 years old in 2002. i did not expect that this live recording would change my life forever. This mix was full of perfectly mixed and selected Italo Disco tracks. I found myself listening to the it for half a year, day in day out. I would come home from work, park the car in front or my parents house and listen to the mix in the car till it was finished. This was the level of appreciation I had for this music. By that time, I didn’t know what kind of music it was. It took some time and a lot of research till I found out, that the genre was called Italo Disco. From there on I started buying everything labeled „Italo Disco & 80s“. Luckily, I had a good payed job which made me finance all this random buys from all over europe. So I ended up with lots of records I did not know. All I was looking for, was that special Italo Disco sound, but of course I also came across New Beat, Dark Wave, NDW and all sorts of great music from the 70s and 80s. But back then I had a rather narrow focus, so when I moved to Berlin in 2005, I left all those „Non Italo“ records at my parents house. Finally, last year, I took the time to go through all the records, I left behind in 2005 and rediscovered so many nice tracks. Even some cool 90s techno stuff on 33rpm. I even found records that I bought again later on without knowing that I have them already. So I decided to make a mix with my „forgotten“ records.
Besides that, it was also an interesting challenge to be limited to a smaller amount of records (30-40) to create a mix from. And here you go with Part 1.

While PHONON's main interest lies in the early House sounds that once lit up Chicago and New York, he’s also always on the hunt for lesser-known records of different (brain-)danceable genres. 

This mix is the result of amazing hours @jan-abekrfcce spent in Japanese record shops during which Phonon mainly rummaged through boxes of domestic productions from the 80s and 90s.

Here some words from him, MFI / EAV asked him to share:

"I grew up in Singen (southwest Germany near the Swiss border) to the sounds of the Flamenco and Brazilian Guitar as well as Jazz - my father was a guitar and music teacher. I learned to play the trumpet and the drums (nowadays I turn to Synths and Drum machines.)  I have a thing for synth - Early Roland Pad sounds are my favorites.

In the context of music I like to research and understand historical contexts and roots and I try to translate that into my mixes. I started my collection with late 1980s House Music, loads of which I found when I studied & lived in NYC. 

I also lived in Milan for some years and return to Italy more than once a year. After that, I was in Leipzig. When traveling, I always try to find and bring back some special records, which might not be easily found back home."

Phonon lives nowadays in Berlin since 2019, although he travels and works remotely a lot. He has put up nights and DJed at Paloma, Beate Uwe and Bars. He also plays in Freiburg, Konstanz and countries where he spends time traveling/working remotely like in Italy, the US and Japan.
