Rhythm and Roots presents ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’, an compilation of music inspired by birdsong and a project fusing art with activism. We challenged some of South America's most talented young musicians to create an original piece of music inspired by and using the song of an endangered bird from their country.

The result is a beautifully diverse and rich album of fresh new music, fusing electronica with natural sound, folkloric rhythms with modern-synthesisers and precious singing with rich instrumentation. Each song tells a story and paints a picture of these magnificent birds.

Using music as a tool for change, 'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' aims to raise awareness about the plight of these beautiful but threatened species, many of which are on the edge of extinction. It will also raise funds for those working to protect them. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Ecuadorian birding organisations Aves y Conservación and Fundación Jocotoco, two non-governmental organisations with the aim of ensuring the survival of birds and their vital habitat in Ecuador, one of the most rich countries for biodiversity in the world.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl in March 2015 via Rhythm and Roots. It will be accompanied by a series of one-off illustrations and post-cards from the American designer Scott Partridge.

My sets often reflect my own unique thoughts and feelings and gave the listener a deeper look into who i am and what moves me. I see myself as a traveler, a philosopher as a DJ in that i have a deep sense into sounds and in that way I try to make my thoughts and feelings audible. so my selection is a highly curated combination of unique tracks that are timeless and that overcome the boundaries of genre, country, or context. my thoughts to that mix are: »We are one species. We are star stuff harvesting star light. Our lives, our past and our future are tied to the sun, the moon and the stars. Our ancestors knew that their survival depended on understanding the heavens. so everyone can feel the whole world and still feel lost in it. so many people are in pain - no matter how smart or accomplished - they cry, they yearn, they hurt … we all want the same things: comfort, love, and a peaceful heart. we can feel it in our body and soul. and so as time goes on, you’ll understand. what lasts, lasts; what doesn’t, doesn’t. Rolandson, a self-described “child of the Baltic Sea” whose roots lie in Sweden/Uppsala and Rostock, currently lives in a quiet city called Halle an der Saale. The amiable 38-year old’s heart beats for so many beautiful things he has discovered in his travels that he sees himself as a traveller who “transforms his thoughts and feelings into pictures, and transforms those pictures into mixtapes”. His sets often reflect his own unique thoughts and feelings and give the listener a deeper look into who he is and what moves him. To quote a wise man: “It is the work of he whose intention was not to impress, but to be true, that will persist.” (Jean Cocteau)

Rolandson has been playing music for 20 years now and has been enchanting his listeners with unbelievable sets that he often gets lost in himself.
His sound transcends the boundaries of genre or style - a characteristic that applies to him not only musically but also personally: he avoids clichés and instead strives for originality and musical diversity.

When he’s not behind the decks, he’s the driving force behind his netlabel and podcast series “Seasidetrip”, which he started in 2012 after recording a mix at sea. Since the first Seasidetrip mix, many artists have have interpreted their love and longing for the sea in their own mixes, contributing to the growth of this wonderful project which has not only touched the hearts of its listeners, but also led to many friendships and inspiring collaborations with other artists along the way.

Rolandson invites you to join him in making the world a bit more colourful, a bit more diverse and saturated with unique music.
