On the list of recurrent Rust favorites, Rumpistol has kept us enamored with his compositions for the entirety of our label’s active years. A musician and producer of remarkable vision and professionalism, each successive Rumpistol release has gradually unveiled more and more of the story hidden in sound, playing out more like a musical drama than just a catalog. Consequently, Nebula is much more than just an album: 

The LP is inspired along two mingled fronts, being both a testament and a love letter to the waning awe that the Space Race (and its implications) imbued amongst the many peoples of the world, while also being designed with an implicit focus on the results on stage. Nebula’s arrangements work in tandem with these ideas, combining jazz, classical motifs, and modern electronic music, utilizing an array of both vintage and contemporary tones, synthesis, and compositional approaches to channel the all-encompassing wonder of the cosmos. Its pacing is entirely unlike the more dance-oriented offerings in the Rumpistol discography, replacing frenetic energy with the draw of tempered, introspective listening. Explicitly recorded and designed alongside a cast of instrumentalists and visual designers, the record is the next logical step in Rumpistol’s recent grounding in his consistent live ensemble, breaking out of the traditional molds that tend to keep producers narrowed to a single lane. Naturally, for The Rust’s upcoming 95th release, we can think of no more perfect a match than the Nebula LP.

The first single we’d like to share from the album is titled Stargazer—an effusive ode to a more pensive listening experience, the track is light as a feather, though not for lack of body. Legato flutes, meandering arpeggios, and hypnotic drum shuffles populate the runtime of the track in a slow dovetail, gradually giving way to a percussive, production-heavy back half. So much breathing room is achieved within a space that feels distinctly layered to its fullest. It highlights not just the impressive engineering that allows Rumpistol’s work to shine; it puts on display the mature, measured control he has as a composer and arranger, marrying sonic fullness to rich dynamic range in a way that refreshes the palette in real time. With much more in the cannon prior to the full release of Nebula, ‘Stargazer’ is just the first step on the road to Rumpistol’s latest nested narrative.

Arsonist Recorder lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Hailing from a punk/noise background and having played in many bands as a drummer and guitar player, he eventually shifted course into heavy breakcore and experimental electronica (as part of the duo “Quintrix”), which led to performances alongside the likes of Venetian Snares, Sickboy, Patric C, kid606 a.o. and these sounds still echo in his music today. Since 2018 he runs the ZwaarteKracht record label, has released music under many labels and was an early member of the UK based Hybrid collective. His work explores themes of chaos, destruction, and reconstruction, much like the paradox suggested by his name. The juxtaposition of "Arsonist" and "Recorder" hints at an artistic duality—one that burns down conventions and rebuilds sonic landscapes from the ashes.

Sigma_ALgebra (Barcelona, 1972) is the pseudonym of Spanish electronic music composer and producer Eduardo Jiménez, now based in Granada(Spain). His passion for electronic music sparked in the late '80s, but it was during the '90s that he truly honed his skills as a DJ. He drew heavy inspiration from legendary labels like Warp, Rephlex, Ninja Tune, and Scam Records. In the early 2000s, Eduardo moved to Valencia, where he became deeply involved in various electronic music projects. Inspired by the wave of innovation that redefined electronic music, he started producing under the alias Sigma_ALgebra. In recent years, his tracks have landed on well-known labels such as Antigravity Device, Elektrodos, Digital Distortions, Urban Connections, Diffuse Reality, and recently the label Science Cult. He’s also collaborated with renowned UK Electro producer and DJ ADJ (Pyramid Transmissions), releasing on Tensor Norm, a label he co-founded alongside Valencia-based DJ Mario Ortega (Wavelet). Other notable works include a split release with RXmode on Elektrodos and new project on Arkada with producer Arsonist Recorder. Sigma Algebra's journey continues to evolve, blending deep roots in the history of electronic music with fresh and innovative sounds

The present tracks were produced circa 2000-2001 and are my first releases as "Subjex". This EP was "hidden" inside a compilation i curated for a small local label (Tot-Al Records, released in 2002) and that i called "Bedroom Research" because, at the time, my friends and i were living in tiny rooms, with a mattress thrown on the floor and a computer, exploring sound 24/7. I decided to keep this fancy name and make it the one of a collective and a label... A starting point.

After many years immersed in the techno scene, he met Florence in the mid-2010s, who provided him with opportunities to perform at Les Charades Électroniques shows and with EC Underground web radio from 2015 to 2022. Now, Stefan plays various kinds of electronic music, consistently delivering a mental sound.

About:
Chelsea Bruno, artist alias Eden Grey, is an experimental music composer and performer from Miami, US, creating a collection of cross-genre works in the studio. She has been performing her music live and self-releasing albums of studio works since 2008. Her passion for synthesis research developed while earning her Masters' degree in music technology at Florida International University. She was classically trained on the piano in her youth and has worked with the modular synthesizer since 2013. She is a PhD researcher in music composition at Royal Holloway, University of London and actively curating an ongoing series of modular synthesis meet and showcase events in London called CV FREQS.
