In 1934, Douglas Southall Freeman published his definitive four volume study on RE Lee. He had intended to move on to another part of American history after that, but discovered he could not move on without studying Lee’s subordinates in command, his lieutenants in the War Between the States. The result was this equally exhaustive three volume study of the command structure of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Story of a Great Medical Pioneer

Written in 1946 by the eminent scholar and physiologist John F. Fulton, a man who knew and worked alongside Cushing, this is the definitive biography of one of the most significant figures in the history of medicine and surgery. Cushing’s legacy is present in every operating room in the world everyday, for he was much more than the father of modern neurosurgery: among other innovations, he was the first to follow blood pressure during surgery and the first to develop a practical means of doing so. He was a pioneer in electrocautery, otherwise known as the electric knife, which is used in most operations today to control bleeding. He worked out the relationship between gigantism and pituitary tumors. These are just a few of the numerous innovations and discoveries he is credited with.

He counted among his friends and patients many of the foremost physicians, statesmen, scientists, and scholars of his time. One of his daughter’s married FDR’s son. Included among the correspondence here are notes and letters with Sir William Osler (the father of modern internal medicine), Walter Reed (the man who conquered Yellow Fever), William H. Taft, The Mayo Brothers (founders of The Mayo Clinic), William Halsted (the father of modern surgery), and many, many more.

This work will be of great interest to neurosurgeons, medical students, nurses, neurosurgical physician associates, medical product reps, and anyone with any interest in the history of medicine. Cushing knew everybody who was anybody in medicine during the first third of the 20th century and it’s all described here in remarkable prose. There is much material here on the founding of the Johns Hopkins Medical School as well as the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Includes the founding of the the Cushing Brain Tumor Archive at Yale and The Harvey Cushing Society, now known as the AANS. It will be easily accessible and can be listened to in piecemeal fashion, such as to and from work for 10 minutes at a time, or on a long car ride or when traveling by plane for hours. A surprising amount of Cushing’s advice remains relevant to today’s physicians in general and neurosurgeons in particular.

Originally published in David Claypole's American Daily Advertiser on September 19, 1796 under the title "The Address of General Washington To The People of The United States on his declining of the Presidency of the United States," the letter was almost immediately reprinted in newspapers across the country and later in a pamphlet form. 
The Farewell Address endures as a critical founding document for issues of Union, partisanship, and isolationism. It seems, as you shall hear, particularly relevant today.

George Washington's Farewell Address to the Nation NONFICTION

At 6:01 pm on On April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King was shot. He was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm at St. Joseph's Hospital in Memphis, TN after a failed attempt at open cardiac massage. He was 39 years old.

King was standing on the balcony outside room 306 on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel when, in the words of biographer Taylor Branch, time on the balcony turned lethal and King's sojourn on earth went blank.

But did it? Did it do so immediately? Was King doomed the moment that bullet crashed through him? Is there any action that might have saved his life as he lay supine on that balcony, bleeding profusely from a wound to his right jaw and neck? He wasn't pronounced dead for 64 minutes. Was he, in fact, alive during that time? Was there ever a chance he could have been saved by the relatively crude trauma care of 1968? And how about today? If King was shot in 2021, might he survive?

This is a work of creative nonfiction that purports to show what happened in the 64 minutes after King was shot—an intense, dramatic recreation of the struggle to save his life back in 1968—and what might transpire if the same injury occurred today with our modern trauma system.

Audiobook narrator Edison McDaniels does both fiction and nonfiction work.
