Crack Mix 486: Identified Patient

People usually talk about Berlin, London, New York when discussing electronic music hotspots, and Paris doesn't always get its due. Case in point? It produced Jennifer Cardini, one of the most distinctive DJs to to ever come out of the city. (She's lived in Germany for a while, but the point stands.) Her sound lands somewhere between disco, house and EBM, rooted in a groovy, post-modern chug. You'll hear nu-disco, industrial, techno and electro too, usually built around big hooks. It's a sound that is not only instantly recognizable, but instantly likable.

As a producer, Cardini also deserves her flowers. She's been putting out records since the mid-'90s, and with her first label Correspondant, she's built up a rock-solid catalogue from artists like Fort Romeau, Man Power, Cormac and more. More recently she started the Dischi Autunno imprint, a place for more crossover-friendly music that indulges Cardini's tastes for all things melodic (and maybe a little goth).

Cardini's RA Podcast is a beautiful summary of all these ideas and influences. It's hard and banging, sure, but also lithe and athletic. There are plenty of tracks with the surge of EBM or the stab of industrial. Lots of reverb. Decadent melodies undergirded by tough drum patterns. And it's paced as expertly as you'd expect from someone who's been DJing for over 30 years. In the interview below, Cardini says she "loves how the young generation is digesting four decades of club / rave culture," and you can hear that history living and breathing in Cardini's DJing, too.

Misha Gutman is a DJ and promoter from Moscow, co-founder of the streaming project "PROEKT" and ex-teacher of the DJ school "Uppercuts".

Misha harmoniously combines music from different eras, moods and grooves. His mix for PRGRPHS, consists of vintage German new-beat with characteristic vocals, catchy trance sounds and acid compositions from different eras.

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.

He’s an energetic alternative electronic music DJ, event organizer, journalist, radio presenter, an important part of the techno culture and also one of the pioneers of pre-club rave culture dissemination. He organizes parties, mass events and hosts radio shows, and for many people made a huge impression and influence. He is often referred to as the godfather of the Lithuanian rave culture.

Her musical journey began as the lead singer of a punk-electro band — a raw and rebellious spirit that continues to fuel her creative voice today.

Within the Dutch dance scene, Lenxi has carved out her own lane as a genre-defying selector and producer, weaving together hypnotic techno, IDM, bass, breaks, and rave energy into uncompromisingly raw and moving DJ sets.

Like her productions, her DJ sets are marked by emotional depth, oFering listeners a glimpse into her inner world. Klex is a DJ and producer based in Berlin, known for his eclectic blend of trance, breaks, and progressive sounds. Since 2017, he has been at the helm of Strictly Strictly, a label he co-founded with friends that also organizes festivals and events in and around Berlin. Klex’s DJ sets are a journey through diverse styles, always with a deep love for basslines, hi-hats, and energetic vibes. As a producer, Klex has released music on respected labels like his second home Warning, Mana Abundance, and Electric Shapes, and his debut EP, Klextasy, on his own imprint, Strictly Strictly.

Hypnotic Black Magic is a Berlin and Lisbon-based DJ and producer, renowned for her trippy and uplifting sets that take audiences on euphoric journeys. 
She is also the head behind the well-established label and event series Art Bei Ton, shaping since 2018 her vision of the scene through hypnotic sounds, psychedelic visuals and gender-balanced line ups.

Inspired by nostalgic and avant-garde electronic sounds since her early teenage years, HBM has developed her music taste around hypnotic techno, atmospheric ambient, psychedelic sounds and IDM/tribe. Collecting tracks with a preference for loopy patterns, dreamy pads, groovy rhythms, and trancey basslines, HBM’s goal is to drive the audience through a cathartic journey - dancing through obscure thoughts, meditative states, and sensual expressions.

After immersing herself in the free party subculture at 15 years old and moving to Berlin at 18, HBM's passion for freedom and DIY ethos drove her to build a supportive community for FLINTA* and queer artists.  In 2018, she launched Art Bei Ton and Ambient Sleepers, holding space for diverse and marginalized international artists to express their creativity, and challenge the established discriminatory systems. 
Between 2020 and 2023 she co-owned a underground club in Berlin, that became a launchpad for emerging collectives to shape their identities and push sonic boundaries.

Her work has brought her to enchant dancefloors at iconic venues worldwide, including SÄULE (Berlin), Tresor (Berlin), VENT (Tokyo), Gare (Porto), Ministerium (Lisbon), Vurt. (Seoul), La Station Gare Des Mines (Paris), LAUT (Barcelona) and soon MODEM Festival in Croatia. Continuously traveling, her mesmerizing sets  have resonated in major cities such as New York, Medellin, Tbilisi, Sydney, Amsterdam, Goa, Bangkok, Beijing, Brussels, Montreal, Istanbul, and beyond.

On the production side, Hypnotic Black Magic released her EP ‘Passages’ on Art Bei ton in Feb 2025, as well as some tracks on some VAs. Stay tuned for more updates—exciting news on the horizon!
