South African talent Deep Aztec reveals his twelve-track debut album ‘Healing Frequencies’ via his newly minted MFENGU Records imprint this summer. 

A blossoming artist within the South African electronic landscape and a name firmly on the rise, Cape Town-based DJ, producer, live act, and record label owner Deep Aztec looks set to flourish onto the global house landscape. Having played alongside artists including Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, and Floyd Lavine across South Africa’s leading music festivals and events whilst releasing via Watergate, House Afrika, and Nervous Records, early-July now welcomes the arrival of two new projects - a new label, and his debut album. A celebration of music, life, and love, his twelve-track ‘Healing Frequencies’ LP welcomes a hypnotic and resonant exploration of a maturing artist, curator, songwriter, and collaborator, whilst unveiling a fitting introduction to his new label, MFENGU. 

“When I look back at my trajectory from the time I started until now, it is certainly nothing short of a never-ending string of changes and progressions. The journey is full of ups and downs, tears, and laughter. Whenever I'm feeling clueless about life, I find myself reminiscing of my colourful childhood memories. The project is rich with creative energy from front to back, stemming from his continual desire to reinvent, rework and innovate. From the smoky and hazy Jazz-tinged territories of title track ‘Healing Frequencies’ to the futuristic planes of ‘Don’t Forget About It’, the oddball stylings of ‘Land Of Kings’ and the rich psychedelia of ‘Polygon Disco’, the twelve track body of work showcases a rich blend of house, disco, and Jazz soundscapes whilst presenting a rich and warm sound palette an array of productions covering everything the growing music lover needs. 

Through an expertly curated selection of features from both local and global artists in Dumama, L Speaks, Rona Ray, and Aztec’s own alter-ego James Blond3, the effortless collaborations all feel at home and organic, with each collaborator showcasing an unmistakable voice to transform the South African’s productions into something unique. And in turn, the stage is shared by a producer with innate studio ability, presenting the perfect opportunity for producer and artist to shine and explore new grounds. 

Exploring the fringes of diverse and intertwined genres, whilst reinterpreting its roots in house music, ‘Healing Frequencies’ presents Deep Aztecs past, present, and far-found future, opening the doors and journeying into the mind of a rising star’s own interpretation of the genre.

Roberta has been one of the hottest deep house producers in the underground over the past few years. Shunning all conventional wisdom for “success” in dance music, her visage and persona remain shrouded in mystery. Instead, she eschews social media and all internet nonsense in favor of letting the music do the talking. Her distinctive sound flips shards of classic tracks into rugged and fresh soulful house jams, doing major dancefloor damage for James Duncan’s Innermoods, Kai Alcè’s NDATL, and her own Night Moves label. After a quiet 2021, she now teams up with Worldship Music on The Brooklyn Ave. Sessions to kick off 2022 with another fine selection of music, sure to please any discerning house or garage head. 

Lead cut “This Song Is For You” utilizes snippets of spoken vocals alongside an extremely funky bassline to grab the attention of dancers, spreading positive vibes all around. On Greg Royal’s “Pur Royale Dub”, things are stripped back and echoed out, with a snippet of a funk classic also making an appearance. 

Organic percussion, R&B keys, and sultry vocals signal a smoother approach on “Gentle Is My Love”, with house strings and a sax break accentuating that feeling. Simplicity is key here, just a few parts work together flawlessly to craft a big mood. 

Flipping over to the B side reveals “Anything You Want” which is the highest energy cut on the EP. Deft sample chopping and another excellent bassline make for an irresistible groove. Worldship heads Teflon Dons take the reigns on their “Did This For the Shelter” remix, which increases the grime and the darkness for a perfect late night garage dub. 

Fans of Worldship and Roberta will not be surprised to hear just how well their respective sounds mesh together on The Brooklyn Ave. Sessions.

SlothBoogie Records welcomes Deep House maestro DJ Aakmael onto its roster this March with ‘The Hardbody Project’ EP, comprised of four original compositions from the Richmond, US-based artist.

Across the past decade and a half DJ Aakmael has unveiled an impressive back catalogue of soul-drenched, dynamic deep house via revered imprints such as Uzuri, Church, Scissor & Thread, Freerange and Second Hand Records amongst many more. Here we see his latest material perfectly interlace with SlothBoogie Records own impressive back catalogue of bumping house and raw deep cuts.

Leading the release is ‘Hardbody’, laid out across seven minutes with chopped brass samples, bright key sequences, modulating Moogesque resonant leads and shuffled drums before ‘Track 166’ shifts focus over to a deeper aesthetic via dubbed out chord swells, organic percussion and twinkling piano melodies.

The aptly named ‘Deepshyt’ opens the flip side, as the name would suggest employing an amalgamation of deep and entrancing synth work, crisp drums and spoken word vocal chants. ‘Strobe’ then rounds out the release with a more disco-tinged House feel, fusing together funk guitar licks, cinematic strings and a snaking bass groove atop Aakmael’s signature swinging rhythmic feel.

SofaTalk is known for his wide ranging tastes that spans house, funk, neo-soul, jazz, broken beat and downtempo. He's the founder of Cognitiva Records and has a monthly residency on the ever-growing Universal Rhythms. His sounds can be found on Banoffee Pies Records, Yam, Ini Movement, Tusk Wax, Broken District, Omena, and Anma. Up and coming Italo talent XL Regular hails from Rome, and operates with the dancer firmly in mind. He's been making a name for himself by skilfully mixing and cleverly blending a myriad of elements of jazz, hip hop, and jungle, all squeezed into broken beat. Together Piero Paolinelli and Alessandro Giacchi have released previously on Omena, ANMA, Cognitiva, INI Movement, Nómada and Monologues.

The cheeky yet sophisticated “Manzo Edit” calf returns with a fresh assortment of four lushly revisited cuts. First on the menu is “Digestif”, a laid-back Disco House track ideal for setting the dance floor groovin. “Get It” also falls into the downtempo realm with its smoky acid beat, while “Dancecraft” hits you head-on with a load of robotic funk. Lastly, “Forneria Moderna” pays a festive homage to the Latin side of Jazzy House.

Early last year we played at the small but perfectly formed, Oma Doris club in Dortmund. 
One of the residents that night was a young DJ by the name of Mr Fries, who during the night handed us a CD of demos.

Immediately impressed with what we heard, the idea of an EP was formed. 
Nearly a year later we are proud to present the newest member of the pack!

First up on remix duties is Hodini whose recent EP on Max Graef and Glenn Astro, Money $ex Records has been on constant rotation since it's release.

Hodini is an alias of prolific German Hip-Hop producer, Hulk Hodn and a major influence on Mr Fries who has sighted he was one of reason he was one of the main reasons he started to make beats. 

To round of the EP we've enrolled long time friend Garth BE. The artist featured previously on WOLFEP003 back in 2009 with All The Thrills. Since then he has setup the fantastic Sweet Sticky Records, releasing two full length LPs to great acclaim.

With "No Words", Mr. Fries delivers what he does best: a true house cut filled with a deep mystic atmosphere. It has that 'moodymann-esque' live-recorded production feeling, that smokey jazz club ambience, and we love it. Still, do not be worried, here we deal with a pure house track featuring a dynamic rhythm with afro influences leading the track throughout its 6 minutes.

Born in Dortmund, he has been a busy musician and producer for almost 10 years and produced as “Mr. Fries" electronic music influenced by Jazz and Funk.
