This episode of Transience is a rebroadcast from Intimate Connections, a special edition show on Cashmere Radio, that explores the relations between emotions and music. For this ,Transience host, Lou Drago invited friend and collaborator Ligovskoï to explore an emotional space that they have both been interested in, in their productions and Transience's target sound palette. Starting with our sun's frequency, 126,22 Hz, Lou Drago and Ligovskoï speculate about the effect of this specific vibration. Supposing a correlation between the life-giving energy of the sun and its frequency, the artists have created an hour's journey that subtly weaves through the interstices of emotional complexity, landing, hopefully, in a place that leaves the listener rejuvenated and uplifted.

This year I had the great pleasure of playing an ambient set at my favourite UK festival, Above Below. From the curation, to the sound systems, to the lighting & most importantly to the people, Above Below is a very special party, so I really wanted to make this as special as I could :)

To the best of my knowledge it wasn't recorded so here is an attempt at a re-record. It contains some of my favourite ever ambient & experimental records, and some of my own music & tools I prepared especially for the festival so this feels like a personal one.  I was really happy with the flow & vibe so I hope that transmits!

Live at The Coombe Stage, Above Below festival 2024

If there are any DJs I want to uplift here or else, it's the ones who I know have a deep knowledge of the histories and many sounds of 'dance music' -- not for want of being a know it all, but of gaining histories and contexts that would be otherwise lost in the algorithmic shuffle. Nashville-born, Montréal-based @esme3xtace is one of the best DJs of late I've heard make pure wormholes of techno, the kind that you can properly shut out the world and lose your body in. As someone who was also into this sound when I was their age, it gives me joy to see early-to-mid 20-somethings have the chances to share that kind of knowledge. Esme's mix feels like you're on cruise control, it's gone midnight and the air smells of petrichor, faint diesel, and distant flowers. Many shades of techno flow across each other like paint. You neither know nor care what tomorrow will bring.

¿Son necesarias las etiquetas? Pues depende de para qué. Si es para determinar si alguna pieza musical debe ser escuchada o no hablando esta por delante de la música, pues no, además de no ser necesarias cierran muchas puertas de placer sonoro y "obtusan" nuestras curiosidades . Muy distinto es apoyarnos en ellas para intelectualizar el sonido, identificar corrientes, conocer los instrumentos que generan, la naturaleza de su fuente de inspiración e incluso categorizaciones fuera de lo tangible y lo cuantitativo.

En este programa especial recorremos los subgéneros más destacados del Ambient. Para ello se ha diseñado un organigrama Ad hoc, tan obvio por un lado como distinto a todos los demás por otro. No se nos ocurre mejor manera de hablar de música que regocijándonos en los matices sonoros que esta ofrece, ejemplarizando sus paradigmas con sublimes tracks y dejándonos llevar por ellos para relatar contenido al hilo propuesto.

Un episodio de disfrutar mucho, suena un musicón de escándalo (como siempre) pero que esta vez habla más allá de su propósito principal dibujando a nivel sónico el género como si un de un árbol se tratase, personificándose cada subgénero en ramas subyacentes al tronco aparentemente condenadas a no cruzarse… hasta que las hojas que brotan de sus puntas se rozan zarandeadas por el viento de nuestra escucha y vuelven a su punto común de partida, el género Ambient.

Deena Abdelwahed has a two way relationship with music: in her early years back home in Tunisia when she programmed nights at Nüba, she was known for introducing the likes of footwork, UK bass and kuduro along side experimental house and techno to the local scene. Meanwhile, her own music on labels like InFine has introduced European audiences to bass and techno with plenty of fascinating Arab influences.  This was best showcased on her Khonnar album late last year, which came with plenty of inventive rhythms, weird sound designs and generally challenging musical ideas. 

Abdelwahed’s mix for us comes ahead of her performance at Dekmantel Festival in August and showcases her ability to twist basslines and layer in spiritual ambiance to absorbing effect. It manages to be punchy and physical yet thoughtful throughout, and also comes with plenty of the Arab influences - vocals, instrumentation, rhythms -  that make her work so standout.

Galaxian is an arresting artist who blurs the lines between many different sounds and scenes. A militant style in the booth is matched by his helmet-wearing on stage persona: he gobbles up and spits out anything from industrial to electro, EBM to synth with an impossible amount of energy and improvisation. His dark drum programming and synth eruptions soundtrack cyber attacks that are utterly visceral and unorthodox and ah hour in his presence will leave you feeling exhausted he packs so much in.

This week we have a live recording from his gig at Concrete in Paris from December last year. It’s a blistering trip through his world, a flurry of ideas, textures and genres that sound as if they are fired from a machine gun. It will get you up on your toes and keep you there, leaving you wide eyed and ready for action no matter what time of day you listen to it.
