Michael wrote Dead and Buried after being laid off work on a Friday morning. Half-remembered drunken mishaps filtering through a hazy hangover, he lay on his bed with his unplugged Stratocaster. Enthusiasm was low. But sometimes, you've just got to write. Cracks were beginning to form in a long-term relationship, fuelling the lyrics and pumping the track full of rage. Dead and Buried is about self-destruction. The term is used to describe the need to move on from all of the nonsense that was causing such frustration. An hour and a half later, the song was finished.

Tokyo is dying. Having gone through 30 years of economic stagnation, Tokyo is still fettered by commercialism and globalism, and repeatedly destruct and create. Nature, culture, tradition, scenery, sentiment, humanity, affection, and laughter disappear day by day. Music is no exception. Moreover, 2020, which Tokyo gives its all to, is being threatened by the new virus pandemic. Tokyo can’t die.

You and Me was written, tracked and produced in Butter Bath's bedroom studio in Sydney’s east. It's about meeting someone at an intimate house party and finding myself plunged into a hypnotically captivating conversation with subject matter as rudimentary as breakfast preferences and as intricate as conspiracy theories. He was entertained for hours by her eloquent, mushroom-tea fuelled tangents.

Proteins

Elephant Castle - the retro-inspired indie rock project from Los Angeles-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Danyew, formed in late 2019. The first single, “Cool To Be Unhappy,” was released on March 27, 2020 with warm welcome. A fresh take on the break-up ballad, Rolling Stone called the track a "roll-around-in-your-underwear-while-the-sun-seeps-through-the-window song.”

Elephant Castle released four subsequent singles with enthusiastic buzz, and is now back for their first release of 2021. Swirling with frenetic energy against a backdrop of lofty vocals and hypnotic organ, “In Circles” tackles the ordinary yet complex struggle to embrace who you really are. 

Raised in Oceanside, CA, Danyew has been writing and recording music since age 12 after stealing his father’s tape recorder. Growing up listening to 50s and 60s oldies, Elephant Castle is a response to these early influences combined with a love for vintage synths, layered vocals, the dreamy sounds of tape saturation and analog gear.

Danyew spent six years as a touring member of the band Foster the People. He left at the beginning of 2020 to pursue his own music.
