Sam’s EP boot’s off with ‘Chocolate’, a track that builds and builds using detuned synths, stabs and funky drums to make any dance floor erupt. ‘Domino’ is a track that’s bassline drones underneath its own distinctive synth line to keep the drums rolling along steadily. The title track ‘Black Leather’ is everything you would expect in a Drumcode record; a subtle throbbing bass line which, keeps the track moving before the synth stabs enrapture the track and twist it into a dark, throbbing composition. The final track ‘Daegon’ uses dubbed out drums to incorporate a synth melody line that will blow your socks off and rounds off this well shaped EP.

UNDERSTANDING - Deborah De Luca & F-Rontal

Drumcode starts 2020 with a sterling EP from genre hero Thomas Schumacher, his first on the label after a long association with Adam Beyer.

No ifs or buts, if you’re a techno fan, Thomas Schumacher holds a place in your heart. His 1997 classic ‘When I Rock’ still gets rinsed, he has a vast body of stellar work on his influential former label Spielzeug Schallplatten, including a release from Adam Beyer, and he continues to deliver pin-sharp productions via his Electric Ballroom imprint, including a scorching remix of ‘The House of House’, the 1994 classic from Cherry Moon Trax. The rework was first played by Beyer at Time Warp and has been a 2019 highlight.

He first contributed to Drumcode in 2018 with ‘The Unseen’, a stirring contribution to ‘A-Sides Vol.7’, setting up a maiden EP with ‘Crimson’. Beginning with the brilliant ‘Feist’, it’s a no-nonsense brain melter, as 303 arpeggios bloom and recede, creating a thrilling rhythmic intensity throughout. The title track ‘Crimson’ is crafted around two minutes of tension-building synths, before a beat finally appears and a rasping deep bassline commands the dancefloor. ‘Anker’ brings the rave with eagle-eye focus, unleashing a wall of fierce acid to round out the pack.

London based artist DYSART kicks off 2020 with a class new EP ‘No Acid’ on Kneaded Pains. After his third EP on Intec in 2019 and multiple Radio 1 support, it looks like 2020 could be the year for DYSART.

Keeping to his stripped back style, ‘No Acid’ is a lesson in less is more. Pounding 909 kicks pulverise as metallic percussions syncopate the rhythm. Dystopian vocals, clever drum work and eerie synths complete the sonic landscape resembling the kind of desolate terrain perfect for techno. 

On remix duties, rising star Frazi.er ups the tempo punctuating the tension with submarine radar bleeps and a skippy woodblock groove. Relentless and hypnotic. Finally, ‘Dark Metal’ sees overdriven kicks, warped clicks and percussions, and bleeps create the kind of dark energy that only peak time techno can make. Strong tribal drum work again sets this apart from the herd.

Ellen Allien - one of Berlin’s most ardent techno ambassadors - proudly unveils her latest full-length expedition into the realms of underground electronica. Brimming with creative energy, Ellen’s new LP AURAA follows her 2019 release Alientronic, and is her third album in three years. Raw, emotive and capable of transporting you from reality to an electrofied fantasy, AURAA explores the notion of unseen energies controlling our planet.

Beginning with the faintest hint of trance euphoria on the downtempo ‘Hello Planet Earth (Breath Mix)’, the album soon moves into more bumpin’ territory with ‘In Music I Trust’ - Ellen’s signature use of vocals-as-melody entrancing the listener. ‘Walking In The Dark’ takes things up a notch further with jabbing percussion and mesmerising atmospherics, followed by ‘Confusion’, a masterclass in heady hypnotic composition. ‘Human’ is a deeply affecting beatless segue with its drone-esque soundscape. ‘True Romantics’ taps into your emotional centre utilising hard beats and wistful synth lines. German techno titan, Timo Maas joins forces with the Stripped Down label for a brand new single ‘Utopie’, backed with remixes from Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal and Joe Metzenmacher & Borka & The Gang. Timo Maas has been a constant presence on the electronic music stage since the mid Nineties, rocketing to global super stardom off the back of his hugely popular ‘Dooms Night’ remix. Season’s on the white isle, a constant touring schedule and a raft of releases for some of the best labels followed, with music dropping on the likes of Perfecto, Bush, My Favorite Robot, Mobilee and of course his own Rockets and Ponies imprint. Now, the Hannover based artist joins forces with Claudio Ricci’s excellent Stripped Down Records for his latest musical offering which features vocals from Rottler. ‘Utopie’ is a stripped back and hypnotic affair that marries spoken word vocals over a sparse but enthralling soundtrack. Subtle sound design and understated drum programming make this a deep and discerning cut that is sure to bring new fans to both label and artist. The first of the remixes comes from Digital 21 & Stefan Olsdal , which sees the Spanish producer team up with the Placebo bassist for something rather special. Maas has in fact a long standing relationship with the band, having remixes previous Placebo singles and featured singer Brian Molko on his own productions. Here, Olsdal and Digital 21 deliver a mesmerising mix that fuses Batucada style rhythms with a powerfully cinematic string section, making this a a hugely dramatic opus. Finally, Joe Metzenmacher & Borka & The Gang turn in a dark edged and techy reworking that provides a perfect closer to this superb package. With more remixes of ‘Utopie’ to come later in the year, and Timo’s remix of Rodriquez Jr.’s ‘Blisss’ dropping on Mobilee soon, this is shaping up to be a super productive year for the musical maestro. We discovered Noissier early this year via a demo he sent to us and we got really surprised by his huge talent. His first release in the label was a BeenTouched series EP that serves like a perfect introduction of what is coming here, because Kastis Torrau is back to Sincopat now with this outstanding four-tracker 'Momentum' EP including an amazing remix by Danish reference Christian Nielsen.
'Driller' is the first bomb to be dropped and enjoyed with its growling items and percussion rolls that perfectly take you along the track. Also a winner is 'Aurora' with a futuristic atmosphere that creates using unexpected drums, sinister and pitch-shifted voices, and powerful basslines. We have Christian Nielsen back home presenting a timeless re-interpretation of Aurora that makes it even more bumping with the perfect size for the club. Last but not least we have the forward-thinking electronic piece 'Input Lag' that expresses this hypnotism that is a common factor in the three originals. Noissier definitely shows with this EP all his skills and proves he is a new beast to watch out this 2020. Enjoy!
