Deuteronomy 8:5 - Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you

Often when we talk about parents disciplining their children or about bringing them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, we focus on the correction aspect of it while neglecting the training and preparing aspect of it.

How does God discipline his children, and how does he expect fathers to discipline theirs?  In Moses' speech to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8, we find some clues.
