Maple keeps a heart shaped locket round her neck
She never takes it off unless she's upset
At her mother, dearly dead mother
For leaving her with her deadbeat father
Maple told me when she looks inside the locket
She tears up at note wrote in it
She never let me see the letter
Said it's probably for the better

Me and maple went to the cemetery
Found her headstone and laid out daisies 
Maple said it was her mothers name
And she loved them on everything
When we got back to her backyard
We laid on our backs and stared at the stars
She said her mother is the brightest one
She says her mom outshines the sun

Maple left her locket on the bench
And the undertaker took it and he pawned it
And the pawnshop owner took it out to his wife
But he dropped it and left it outside
And a storm blew by overnight 
And it swept the locket cross the state lines
And it ended up into the sea
Now her mother is sleeping with the manatees

Maple called me frantic in a hurry
"Quick, please, I need someone with me
Everything is failing
Everything is ripping at the seam"
I rushed over as soon as I heard
I found her crying, lying in the dirt

"Do you ever get so damn tired of
All the things that conspire against ya?
When she left that here locket for me
You could tell she felt herself drifting
Now she's just a fading blurring memory
And I never should've taken it off my neck
I'm selfish, and god she knows it
Do you think that she noticed?"

Maple's father teared up when he saw her
He looked angrier than ever
"Do you realize what you have done?
That was your mothers only one"
She cried in her hands while he screamed
Screamed how she ruined everything
She didn't even put up a fight
She knew that he was he was right

When the yelling that night started to subside
She packed a bag and left for a new life
She passed her father sleeping drunk on the couch
She scoffed and left the house
She dropped a note in my mailbox that night
"don't come looking, I'm gonna be alright"
And i can tell that it was a lie,
But she was gone by time the sun came by

Maple found herself inside a ditch,
But the undertaker took her right in
She told him her whole story; why she was there that night
And he stared at her with guilt in his eyes
He went to the pawnshop owner in town,
But the owner was also looking all around
For maple's mother's locket
But they all seemed to have lost it

Maple told herself she wasn't gonna wait
She took herself out to the bay
But she saw something in the corner of her eye
A golden locket with her mother's name on the side
She jumped right in and put the locket on her neck
But that's when the poor girl got swept
By a current, a really deadly current
She couldn't seem to swim herself out of it
She drowned and ended up in heaven
She saw her mother with her dead grandparents

Now maple and her mother are having a time
It's almost like they never died
