Up Until Then

When I walk at dawn in spring through one of my usual birding areas, there is a moment when I am sorrounded by rainbow of colors and fluted trills. It is the neighborhood of the bee-eaters.

This laid back song takes its course without many surprises, just like a afternoon where you have nothing specific to do. Your mind wanders around from here to there, not really resting on a specific topic but without haste thinking about this and that.

Compositionwise: Most of the song plays with a delay of an eigth beat between the left and the right hand. Typically, the right hand follows the left hand thus creating a relaxed and laid back feeling. However, at times, the delay when playing shifted quarter beats in the left and right, leads to the music sounding more agitated though both hands have actually relatively slow metrums. (e.g. @ 0.35 or @ 1:20). The main motive arrives three times in the song in different variations with a relatively long (@ 1:10-@ 2:40) middle part that touches on  prelude-like as well as song-like elements. 

The track has been recorded on a Roland FP-90 and mastered in Cubase relatively puristically by just adding  reverb and fiddling a bit with the EQ. I currently find that other effects such as Compressor or Stereo Enhancer do not necessarily improve the sound. But might change that opinion again when I gain more experience ... :-)

feathers stiff, stuck in the gun-metal tar
like a ship out to sea where the people have fled
leaving food warm and waiting, words left to be said

I went walking one day on the turn of the tide    
felt a seeping of blood warming up from inside
Sing in Blue Sing in Blazing, in Sky Colours too
for the voice of the sea holds a memory true

There are faces there dreaming, just beyond reach
voices crooning in golden on a dream-shadow beach
It’s a calling, a drawing, it’s a pink spiral shell
whisper ocean, I hear you in a far away bell

This is essentially an acoustic track – I was in a bit of a ‘dark celtic’ mode and I’ve been exploring how to play a wooden bass recorder (plus descant and alto) and have also included the ocean as an instrument… I recorded the waves/gulls on the beach where I originally wrote the song – how’s that for synergy??   it was a tricky mix I can tell you!!  The cello added some more grunt… well,  no synths in this piece!!  
That big recorder sure takes a lot of air to play it… but I love that hooty haunting sound… what do you think?  
