Tousist Guest Mixes

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

Here we are again (and again), the cold sets in, the nights are darker and our thoughts drift to the warmer dreams in every shape and form. For the next 133 minutes, we learn how to light one's own fire, through the perfect blend of escapism and imagination. Our sonic guide for the occasion is Tousist, aka Harry, an Irish ex-pat who understands musical coherence,  in a way that only comes along once every 100 years. 

I always struggle to put Tousist’ abilities into words, his musical vitality really speaks for itself, but, I’ll give it a shot. A humble being, with an understated approach to melodies across every genre.  His methodical madness explodes into all his mixes and productions. From dub to techno, he has every single base covered. Ever since listening to his mix for passing notes (link below), I have been paying close attention to everything he does, including his own show on DDR and his plethora of other mixes on offer. He is definitely someone to watch. 

This mix really pushes the boundaries of what ’home’ is, designed almost architecturally, with a solid foundation in rhythm, it allows you to shift your perceptions of some dangerous places you wouldn’t usually call home. Perfectly tied into winter through the depth of the melancholy undertones, woven seamlessly with hopeful glimmers to produce this amazingly joyous story arch.  Every room in this ‘house’ brings form and function together in perfect harmony, different hallways leading to different worlds, biophilia and brutalism in sync, with a buffet of surrealism. Time for the tour.

Sonics drip like treacle from your headphones and your speaker cones begin melting, forming volcanic calderas overflowing with lava-like ribbons of magnetic tape. Feedback folds back on itself as bristling chimes flutter over the swamp beneath. Slowly, the aural quicksand pulls you under.

Tousist - Live at Open Ear '19

A special two hour guest mix from Irish born, Melbourne based producer and DJ, Tousist. Harry aka Tousist reached out to me in January, presenting a mix which touches on experimental, dubby and downtempo percussive sounds, with a common atmospheric thread throughout. All the things we love on Passing Notes, it was hard for me to ignore this phenomenal “cold call”. This is the first time I’ve welcomed a guest that was not known to me previously - but I couldn’t ignore the work that had gone in to creating this stunning mix. Digging a little deeper, Tousist has a long history within the electronic music community in Ireland, first as a raver, second throwing intimate parties of his namesake and now curating his resident radio show on Dublin Digital Radio - ddr. and letting his productions slowly seep out into the world through tracks featured on Cork/London based label ‘Department of Energy”.
