ECR 026 - MEIAN - DIVA PLAVALAGUNA

We are pleased to bring you another international collaboration by way of Morioka, Japan and Vancouver, Canada.

Crisp, perfectly executed Japanese screamo pairs with eclectic high octane synthcore for a four course meal that is guaranteed to rustle your jimmies.

This split has been a long time coming, with one band overcoming personal hardships and the other forming in the wake of dissolution from a previous project.

MEIAN's songs are highly polished without being overproduced and tell an engaging and emotional story through what sound like some of the finest sparkly overdriven single coils around. Their first track is downright groovy - the main riff is catchy and moody and feels like it could be the opening theme for the sequel Clone High never got. The music is as uplifting as it is commanding. Sonic comparisons to Sans Visage have been drawn and we can't say we disagree.

Vancouver's Diva Plavalaguna contains members of Emocat alumni Terrifying Girls' High School and Black Knight Satellite. Triple vocals, pervasive weird synth lines, non-stop drums, and busy guitar. A constant onslaught of noise. The opening song first reads as post-hardcore with screaming. A quick surfy passage transitions into bluesy gang vocals with tremolo-d guitar that turn into blastbeats and octave chords. The final song hits like a runaway train with the guitar, bass, and synth making as much noise as they are music. Although it seems like it could fall apart at any moment, every move is calculated.  "This is a family. What's mine is yours."

Additionally, Diva Plavalaguna have teamed up with illustrator Breanna McGowan on a comic series titled 'Diva! Digital Desert Duchess' that follows the band as protagonists in a post-apocalyptic future.
