“Sarno Ultra” opens up a new musical chapter in the lives of Jon Worsley and Kayla Painter. Known for both their own solo material and their collaborative work in Jilk, these two underground stalwarts have come together for something entirely different on this new project.

Prepare for a sense altering trip that creates and traverses through a futuristic audio landscape and leaves no surface untouched.

Fractured vocals, intricate cascading rhythms, collapsing mechanical structures and pulsing textures carry the weight as we shift between moods and tempos with open eyes and ears.

There’s blasts of high energy percussion and glitch laden sound design that effortlessly mesh with the more melancholic sounds and brittle bliss that partners them. It’s an album that never sits still. Even in its quieter and warmer moments, “Sarno Ultra”, always keeps us guessing which exploratory path we’re headed down next.

“Sarno Ultra” is a debut album that drags you into a sonic whirlpool but embraces you while you’re there. Enjoy the experience.

Editions Mego reissue the 2001 release Asuma by Finnish artist Ilpo Väisänen. Originally released on CD this is the first ever vinyl issue, remastered by Rashad Becker. 2001 is a landmark year for the artist following a wave of success from the notable outfit Väisänen formed alongside Mika Vanio, Pan Sonic (as they were now known then). Following a string of highly acclaimed and influential releases such as “Vakio”, “Kulma”, “A’ and “Aaltopiiri” Pan Sonic had toured the globe extensively leaving a trail of blown expectations and rumours of all manner of objects in venues cracking or falling apart due to the immense sound the duo concocted with their unique instruments.

Taking a break from the ecstatic cacophony of Pan Sonic, Väisänen retreated to work on a solo release which conjured the spirits of the former outfit whilst simultaneously carving out a more personal take on these new electronic forms.

Asuma is a precise study of drones, rhythms, clicks, ambience and gentle confusion. Whilst inhabiting a zone of abstraction the results also move in a natural field as Väisänen’s native Finland permeates these recordings as much as the idea of experimentation itself.

Autioitu 1 opens the album as delicate pinball rhythms bounce across the spectrum as a hairy drone hovers underneath. The mood is both intriguing and unsettling. Tukahduttaja is a delightfully disorientating sound sculpture that is hard to pinpoint what it actually is. Klikki is comparable to a microscopic version of Pink Floyd’s “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict”. Asumaton is a foreboding miniature acting like a segway to Vallitseva which embraces the icy clicks that punctuates much of the Pan Sonic output. Arvioimaton Ongelma is an audio riddle whilst Jaettu jitters around a dancefloor crawl. Autioitu closes proceedings as a gentle ambient thumper. Asuma is awash with contradiction and mystery. This is time wrapped in twisted turns and rewards a neat payoff for those interested in the absolute fringes of electronic ‘dance’ music.

For almost two decades, I have been tirelessly seeking honesty in music. I aim to find the sounds with which the artist speaks. Soundscapes that make you feel. Atmospheres that not only fill your room (and headphones) but truly transport you into another time and place. I will never forget the first time I heard Abul Mogard’s music. I was mesmerised. His intricate attention to sound design, rich textures, and manipulation of the created environment instantly transformed me into an avid fan. His music didn’t just augment my mood; it seemed to seep into my being, altering the code behind the perception of my mind. I didn’t just listen to his music, I invited it to be a part of my condition. In an effort to delve deeper and spend more time with such music, and more importantly, the composers themselves,  I created Headphone Community, where I feature an artist for an in-depth exploration. In the last three months, I’ve highlighted the sounds of James Murray, Ben Chatwin, and Erik K Skodvin. Today, I am honoured to announce that Abul Mogard will be the featured artist for the entire month of June! "This little mix is a documentation of a magical summer in my house. I've had friends stay over during an intense long heatwave, and these tracks have been sketched out while hanging out drinking aperol spritzes and chilled wine, and after my friends have gone to sleep. It's a combination of sketches, short jams, almost finished tracks and repurposed bits. 
For those wondering who I am, I am a guy operating, quite comfortably, from the shadowy underbelly of the european experimental techno scene since the early 2000s. I was talked into releasing an EP on 030303 Records in 2014. Since then I've put out more stuff on Analogical Force, Love Love Recs, U.T.T.E.R., Furthur Electronix. 

I’ve gotten reports that both Autechre and Aphex Twin have DJ:ed my tracks, which is perhaps my biggest (second hand) achievement so far, since they are known for quite different styles of music.

To achieve this, we focus on projects that experiment with various art forms, aesthetics, and crafts. Our goal is to create works of art that challenge conventional modes of production and reception.

To bring each project to life, we collaborate with different artists, blending their distinctive approaches and methods into something new. Depending on the medium, many of our productions are conceived as one-of-a-kind pieces or one-time performances.

Empty Space operates as a non-profit association, with all revenue either supporting the artists or being reinvested in future projects.
