Dengue Dengue Dengue’s latest release is named after the traditional dance called Son de los Diablos (Spanish for Sound of the Devils), which was brought over to Felipe Salmon and Rafael Pereira’s native Peru by the Spanish conquistadors, and consisted on a procession of dancers and musicians that took to the streets wearing devil masks. By enlisting Lima’s sizeable African slave population, this tradition incorporated the rhythms and dance styles that would eventually become known as Afroperuvian, one of the main elements of modern Peruvian music and culture and one that increasingly informs the music of Dengue Dengue Dengue, as was recently portrayed on RBMA’s ‘Afro-Peruvian Beats’ documentary. 

This inspiration is especially noticeable on the title track Son De Los Diablos, which incorporates traditional instruments such as the cajita, but also on Buscando, where the duo recorded with members of the Ballumbrosio family, the prominent lineage of musicians and dancers widely regarded as the the premiere ambassadors of Afroperuvian music, dance and culture. As the band explains, this song was “a big step forward”, as it was the first time the duo recorded every rhythmic element with live musicians, giving the track “the flow and cadence only live musicians can achieve”, as well as a vocal sample of one of Peru’s biggest stars Lucha Reyes. The EP continues with Flootz and Cobre, where the pair further explore the unique blend of entrancing South American and African rhythms and melodies that has become their signature sound.
