ABOUT edIT:

From humble beginnings on the Los Angeles underground to world tours of sold-out arenas, Edward Ma has seen it all in a career that now spans more than 15 years. Starting off as The Con Artist in the late 1990s, Ma produced for rappers such as Busdriver, P.E.A.C.E and Sole while holding a residency at Konkrete Jungle, where drum n bass and hip hop were spun side by side to hungry ears. In 2003, Ma reshaped himself as edIT. The next year he debuted with Crying Over Pros For No Reason on seminal UK label Planet Mu. The album melded together Ma's love of hip hop, drum n bass and experimental electronic music, a fusion that would presage hip hop's return to its electronic roots by the end of the decade. Crying Over Pros… sounded like nothing else at the time. It sounded like the future and it would put Ma on the path of his next evolution. In 2006 he co-founded The Glitch Mob, a project that would ultimately take over his solo work by 2010. Today the Mob inhabit a unique position in the dance music world, the roots of which go back to the sonic experiments of Crying Over Pros… Ten years on, the album is being reissued on limited edition vinyl and as a digital bundle with an extra five tracks from the original sessions. Its emotive power hasn't faded one bit and its relevance has only increased as the future it hinted at became the present we now live in.

welcome to the 146th chapter of the Deep Electronics Podcast. The weekly released podcast that brings you the best deep music. This weeks set is mixed by Antonio Vázquez. It took a while but I am very happy to welcome him to the this serie. He created a massive deep techno set  for this occassion. So take a seat and enjoy the ride!

Bio:

Antonio Vázquez is a dj and music producer from Seville (Spain) and based in Berlin since 2011.
He started in producing in 1998 and when he moved to Madrid two years later when he began to
play. There he had the chances to play in different bars and events, until he had the opportunity to
play at Cassette Club on the inauguration party and two times more. His style was always focused
on environmental and organic sounds, shifting sometimes on more minimalistic and electro tones.
The productions where always different styles because of his eclectic music taste and because he
made different works for advertisements and web sites.
But was when he arrived in Berlin and after meeting really inspiring friends, when he develop into
deep techno. And after his podcast for T_Mood, he experienced a really fast and increasing success.
Playing at ://about blank multiple times in different events, in Manchester at Komme, Pseucho Club
in Leipzig and specially he had the biggest chance to play three times at Berghain. After that he
played in many different places around Europe and in Berlin and his productions started to be
relased in Shaded Explorations, Hypnus Records and Semantica.
He is actually involved inside Hypnus Records preparing more productions and EP's.

Release notes
Will & Ink’s latest is a remix EP that finds Bambounou and Simo Cell team up for four reworked versions of Yaleesa Halls Woodall LP. Bambounou is a Paris-based hybrid techno and house producer who has long been close to the 50 Weapons label, and Simo Cell is an experimental artist whose music finds a home on labels like Livity Sound and Wisdom Teeth. 

Up first, Bambounou goes in and turns ‘Woodall 0217’ into a menacing, stripped back track with a soft flurry of toms and freaky sine waves all underpinned by lurching, subliminal bass. Simo Cell then steps up for a version of '0224' that is much more dubbed out and for the club. It breezes along on a swaying groove with hi fidelity sound designs colouring the airwaves as the drums scurry down low. Then the pair link up for their Trance-Attitude-Mix of 'Woodall 0406'. Again the drums are weightless down below as they turn in big, sweeping loops and the slivers of silvery synth really electrify the whole thing as they flash about like fireflies. Finally, they remix the same track again but remove the drums, instead making it a paranoid and dark, spares and suggestive minimal number that is wholly from the future. These two have a very specific sound and one that sounds like little else, a solid match with Yaleesa Hall and the Will & Ink imprint, as this EP proves.

Over the last 10 years Token Records has grown steadily, both in size and stylistic breadth. The aptly-titled Momentum comes as a celebration of the close-knit family of artists amassed throughout the label’s running. The record is a fitting collaborative project, with every track on the album produced by two longstanding and well-respected artists from the label’s roster and especially commissioned for the release. This type of collaboration is intended to showcase the specific sound of the label, developed through 10 years of careful curation, as well as bringing out the individual identities of the artists involved.
 
On the development of the label’s sound, Token founder Kr!z comments, “Inigo delivered quite the statement with the first release Identify Yourself. I think identity was and still is key in the development of the label and the artists.”
 
Inigo Kennedy’s involvement in Token has been profoundly influential and spans its very existence; with three collaborative tracks on the record, it’s easy to hear his trademark cinematic sound throughout. One such offering, Amalgam, is co-produced by Kr!z himself, which is a first step for the label head into releasing his own music after years of taking the back seat, focusing instead on DJing while keeping the label ticking over and the releases coming out.
 
Token’s identity has been clarified through its curation over the years as each new artist has joined the label family. Ø [Phase] has been a staple since 2007, providing cerebral sustenance for the most discerning of listeners. To date, he has produced two successful albums and a string of notable EPs for Token, Binary Opposition being perhaps the best-known; a pulsating, mesmerising project on both sides that played a serious role in pushing the label to a larger audience. Rødhåd’s trademark composure was a similarly early addition, and although his Spomeniks release was a step aside from his own ongoing Dystopian project, he has remained an important member of the Token collective. 
 
Ctrls was a Token affiliate from early in his career, and has to date provided nine solo EPs. His class of jarring, inorganic techno adds an atypical feel to the label’s output, while Antigone’s 2015 double EP Cantor Dust paved the way for another strong artist/label relationship. This bond has resulted series of adventurous releases over past two years, with the most recent Ostinato EP esteemed as a tasteful antidote to the techno status quo. 
 
There are some artists who, although better known for long releasing careers with other respected outlets, have become important in bolstering the label’s character in particular. Oscar Mulero’s reputation as an institution of electronic music precedes him, and Tadeo has been releasing his Detroit-leaning and avant-garde sounds since 2004. Sigha’s involvement with Token came after a varied discography, his Metabolism album from this year marking an integral progression in the label’s direction, providing a firm expression of complex musicality and contemplative form.

The Tel-Aviv centered Yotam Avni officially joined forces with Stroboscopic Artefacts last year, turning in a sensual an invigorating entry for the Monad series. Thanks to his personalized fusion of esoteric and worldly sound elements, Avni immediately made a case to deliver more work to the label, and now he has done so with “Perlude to Dybbuk,” the second in a new series of S.A. releases to feature the Oblique Artefacts visual team’s distinct, elegant portrayals of scanned foliage.

As with Avni’s previous Monad contribution, the new Perlude to Dybbuk makes references – both in title and in sonic content – to the ancient Hebrew folklore of his homeland (a “dybbuk” being a kind of limbonic spirit attaching itself to the body of a living human until it has successfully reached its final destination). However, the atmospheric, rather than overt, use of these references gives this record a level of dignity and quality as well as a premonitory feeling that hovers over the proceedings.

The opening “Avka (New Life)” opens with the twin stimuli of chthonic, rolling percussion and ambience that has become a modern Stroboscopic tradition, but ever so gradually deviates from the realm of the easily anticipated. Some of the surprises to be found here are sharp, organic drum fills and sighing strings that have an uncanny vocal quality to them. By the time a surgically clipped acid synth sample comes into the mix, the track has reached a simmering level of excitement and the listener’s imagination will have license to reside in a virtual world seamlessly combining elements both ancient and futuristic.

“Dybbuk” temporarily situates listeners back in brutal modernity, with the first sounds heard being something like insistently slicing helicopter blades. Avni merely uses this as the foundation, though, for a genuinely unique construction whose shamanic beats, throttled horn and undertow of frenzied electronics combine to give the feeling of being menaced and eventually overtaken by a spirit entity. This piece shows just what Avni is capable when operating in a more aggressive, ‘post-industrial’ mode, and the result stands up with some of the best exponents of that genre.

The finale “Modern Matters” is the most readily club-friendly selection from the disc. This potent, floor-shaking and perspiration-inducing number superimposes resonant vocals from traditional Middle Eastern folk song onto this alchemical mixture of machine oil and sweat, and provides a romantic flair without resorting to naïve, touristic “ethno-techno.” Avni’s skillful dedication to counterpoint, and determination to make a finished form is more than the sum of its parts, shines through here and throughout the duration of this record.

Born in 1978 and raised in California, Tin Man started releasing records in 2004 and established his reputation as a solid techno producer, with impactful releases on labels such as Acid Test, Killekill, and Pomelo.

Foreign Material has a Conservatoire and History background, which shaped his interest in dark atmospheres and techno music. His spirit of techno is a mix of ancient myths and futuristic visions. He is known for his releases on Curle, Norite and Supercinema.

Together they deliver a multi-faceted collaboration with 3 original tracks that provide a lush, hypnotic, mysterious, yet enticing voyage that spans across the functional and mental spectrum.
The narration is intense, at traits metaphysical and dramatic, and always evocative.

From a technical perspective, the artists provide an interesting blend of monophonic and polyphonic synths with percussive elements.
Delays and reverbs also play an important role, adding an interesting density and spatial awareness to the ground structure.
The percussive modeling is precisely coordinated with the synth action, leading to a peculiar form of ritualistic techno with stargazing effects.

In addition to the original tracks, Claudio PRC provides an impressive signature ambient techno reinterpretation of "Drowning" with an evolving and energetic yet atmospheric attitude.

A special artwork hand-designed by Paw Grabowski (øjeRum) complements this full cover vinyl release.

Aconcagua EP, the latest work by Kyntral, refers us to an expedition to the mountains and owes its conception to a trip to the beautiful Mendoza City. The release's name pays tribute to The Rooftop of South America, and presents us with highly sofisticated sonic characteristics; synths take the lead as the EP draws on and get the most surrounding and gripping towards the third track. It's also worth noticing Kyntral's modular synth, whose wide sonic palette he perfectly models as he pleases. Drums and beats, on the other hand, come from a classic 808, which adds an elegant, discrete, and futuristic vibe.
In line with Danza Nativa's latests releases, the final remix is in charge of spanish Architectural, who honors his name by delivering some meticulous sound design.
