Rusted Rhythms Vol. 52 - Luke Vibert [Submersion Edition]

Sicaria Sound are resident DJs for the Deep Medi Musik label and since 2018 they have held a monthly residency on Rinse FM. In 2020 they launched their Cutcross imprint to “champion the melting pot of bass-centric sounds teetering around 140 BPM…whilst spotlighting underground artists" and in March 2021 they made their production debut with their first EP 'Binate'. Ever since making the first family jazz mix in 2020, I knew I’d want to put together another to showcase more of my family’s music in this way. So when I got asked to play a family jazz set as part of the Tipper & Friends takeover at Secret Dreams festival this year, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to do so.

This project felt like a collage to me - spent a lot of time gathering old recordings from family members, piecing together with electronic tracks, and doing new recordings on top of that. It would not be possible without all the musicians and producers whose music I featured in this curation so be sure to see the full track list below. Special shoutouts to my dad Paul Barbato, Uncle Joe “Sonny” Barbato, Uncle Artie Barbato, and family friend Bill Jones for doing many recording sessions with me and making this set extra special.

Lots of love was put into this mix and I do hope you enjoy. As I said after making the first one, I am grateful for having a family that taught me music as one of the greatest pleasures in life, and I hope that this helps keep the vibrant genre of jazz alive and celebrated.

"I am beyond humbled to present Planetary Medicine, my first full-length album. Composed over the last three years in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, this LP is, for me, a testament to the healing power of music. Each song and meditation is encoded with frequencies designed to heighten conscious vibrations. Some tracks are representations of my mental visions, translated into soundscapes; others began as experiments in sampling and sound design and blossomed outward from there. For the 23rd installment of Rusted Rhythms, Sortof Vague and Vinja team up to present a hair-raising mix ripe with delicious vinyl cuts. Sam Whittingham (Sortof Vague), the man behind the decks, is a Colorado native with a keen ear for musical atmospheres. Vince Santora (Vinja), commanding the turntables, is a veteran rhythm curator. Together, their talents align into a mutagenic 45-minute melee. Weaving through drum and bass, half-time, and neuro formats, this mix is an appeal to the adrenaline junkie. United Kingdom native Mike Wallis is best known as one half of Crunch with Tipper and one third of the rowdy, hip-hop heavy K.L.O project, where he performs as Osmetic with Kursa & Lone Drum. During more than two-decades moving through the back streets of electronica, Wallis has released under “10 or 11” monikers and collaborated with dozens of producers. He also co-manages Colony Productions, an imprint that curates some of the world’s most prolific downtempo and glitch music.

For this special thirtieth edition of Rusted Rhythms, this pioneer in broken beat electronica has prepared a “Colonization Mix”, one hour of selections from the Colony Productions catalog, spanning from 2001 to the present day. The musical roots in my family go back to my grandfather, Sid Barbato, an exceptional jazz clarinetist, who passed on the values of music to his many children, my father included. I wanted to put something together that combined these roots of jazz with current electronic styles I am inspired by, and this is the result. This very special set features the music of several of my family members, mixed with some originals as well as music of other producers I like, premiered with the Starborn Productions Jazz Brunch takeover for Industry Strong's 76hr livestream event. I am grateful for having a family that taught me music as one of the greatest pleasures in life, and I hope that this helps keep the vibrant genre of jazz alive and celebrated.

Full Wolf Moon - Ecstatic Dance DJ Set

That rainy winter morning, the little witch woke up in a wet and windy forest.  With her eyes still half-open from a good night’s sleep, her heart suddenly skipped a beat from excitement when she realized the next night there would be a full moon, which meant she’ll participate in the monthly witch coven (which always happens in a different location and in the ever-changing company of two other witches).
After finishing her daily inspection round of the muddy woods, the barefoot girl washed her feet in a little stream, said goodbye to the forest dwellers, and flew into the unknown.  She knew she would – as always - reach her destination by simply following her inner compass.  
This time she flew straight to the East and it was a really long flight.  Never before had she ventured this far eastwards.  After a couple of hours, the rainclouds dissipated and soon she was flying over a snow-covered winter landscape under a glorious blue sky.
While passing over a huge forest, she sensed she had reached her destination and gently touched down in a clearing.  To her great surprise, she wasn’t welcomed by two witches but instead of that, two female wolves were waiting for her.  After a long hug with both animals (hugging a fluffy wolf is particularly pleasant when it’s freezing cold), it appeared that warm clothes and boots were waiting for their guest, with exactly the same grey color as wolf fur.  After putting on the comfortable cape, the little witch felt a very special energy descending over her body … and she immediately knew this was pure wolf energy.  And to her amazement, all of a sudden she was capable of speaking wolf language fluently.  Then the two wolves took the little witch deeper into the woods.  It was an old forest named Puszcza Białowieska, one of the very rare primeval forests in Europe and most trees were already centuries old.  With the immaculately white snow carpet, the majestic trees looked like pillars of a natural cathedral.  Finally they reached the biggest tree the girl had ever seen of her whole life.  The wolves explained this oak tree was named ‘The Guardian of Zwierzyniec’ and its circumference was a staggering 658 cm.  The wolves led the girl to the other side of the tree, where she found an ancient book, lying on a carpet of moss and fern leaves.  The eldest wolf explained that this holy book used to belong to an old wise witch, who was sadly burned at the stake during the persecutions of the 16th century.  Luckily, the old woman saw her fate coming and managed to hand over the holy book to a pack of wolves, who protected it ferociously for over 50 generations.  And since a few years, on every full moon day one random witch is being invited to come and read this venerable book.  And on that snowy day it was the little witch’s turn to get the honour to discover this hidden treasure.  With cautious movements, the girl opened the ancient book and started reading.  On page 1 she found out that the writing of this book had commenced on the 1st day of February of the year 1202, which was that day exactly 819 years ago.  After that, the girl browsed further and deeper into the book and soon she was completely absorbed into this invaluable treasure trove of wholesome magic spells, but it also treated more mundane subjects like a recipe of horseradish stew, a dish which the little witch had so far failed to get right.  The witch was so immersed in the ancient book, that she kept on reading all night long (with the help of some floating lights which she created using a spell which came straight out of the book).  The next morning, the girl was full of new energy and insights, thanked the two female wolves with a (long and fluffy) goodbye hug and flew back westwards to her own forest, wiser and more accomplished than ever before …
