Retro Grooves Vol. 1

Happy electro/swedish house with some synth pop/gaming influences. Initially composed for a video I've edited: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUt2tlLeebg

Using mainly reFX' Nexus2 (16 tracks), Vengeance packs (10 audios tracks) and some Yamaha XS7 (10 MIDI tracks) sounds.

The previous version had audio glitches and some minor mixing/playing issues. Sorry that I had to delete the last file, but I wish SoundCloud could replace existing songs with new version uploads. This one has a better sonic quality as it is uploaded from the original 24 bit WAV compared to the MP3 version. ;)

One of my many unfinished projects that have been bugging me for some years now. Took a long time to finish the song and record the video during a insane workload these past months at my daytime job. But it's done now. 

This was originally intended as song dedicated to my late mom, but we never got around to make lyrics and it just fizzled out. It became an instrumental track after all, still dedicated to the loss of those dear to me. 

Used a lot of Roland MKS as usual and some Yamaha. Even a good deal of Ensoniq gear too as well as Nexus4 for the intro arpeggios in the background.

So, Alex Ball made this rather lovely track a couple of years ago, demonstrating the AMS 1580S and the AMS RMX 16 reverb and delay units. As usual, I couldn't resist taking the vocals and give them my own little twist. I started last year, but things came in the way and the project halted for a bit. Finally managed to complete it just now and here is the result.

Agnus Dei [Feat. Alex Ball] Remake

The 90s called and wanted its groove back. I told it to stop, collaborate and listen! I've had this Alex Ball song on the agenda for quite some time too, and finally got around to finish it up. As always, he made some really catchy hooks that instantly got my 66% shuffle groove going. And I of course went a little more happy-pappy dance floor early 90s style, sprinkled with some glossy 80s FM ear candy and more. 

This is for those who wonder, taken from Alex' video on the Yamaha TX81Z sound module and how he made a "90s Banger" on it. I've also used some TX sounds and enhanced the palette with all sorts of 80s and 90s relevant gear. Hope you like it! ;)

Nothing Left To Lose [Feat. Alex Ball]

Just one of those songs that came out of nowhere. I felt I hadn't made anything worthwhile in a long time and just started on the initial arpeggio groove, added some Yamaha TX816 bells and leads, and the rest just fell into place like pearls on a string.

I asked my friends Håvard and Terje if they wanted to add some proper guitars instead of the MIDI guitars I laid down initially, and this is the result.  Pull down the roof on your convertible and start cruisin'! ;)

After making that little shorts video with all the first chords played on 55 synthesizers, I finally had time and energy to tackle the full song and video. Here is Kim Wilde's You Came, beefed and dressed up in all sorts of pastels and wonderful glory the 80s could muster!

Kim (and her team) already did a bang up job with the original, so it was daunting to even start doing something with this song, but I hopefully added some extra flair and oompf while paying respect to the original craftmanship.

It's actually a significant use of reFX Nexus4 and their FM, 80s and 90s expansion packs, but also a lot of Yamaha TX816 (Full DX Glory!), Ensoniq, Roland, Korg and Alesis synths all the way.

After searching the internet for songs written entirely for and with the famous Roland MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64 modules (except those from games made by Sierra, Lucasarts etc), and not finding any - I thought for myself: is it possible to put something together, that won't sound bad even with the default patches and amount of reverb?

I also chose to use only default patches, but allowed myself to dry the sounds, re-record them separately into MOTUs Digital Performer 7.2 and mix them as one would with every other pop song (only compressors, EQs, delays and reverbs not to modify the sounds away from their original intent).

So this is what you get - polished MT-32 sounds that aren't half bad when processed and EQed into place ;)

This is a song I made back in 2004. I'd just bought the KORG Legacy Collection with mini MS-20 controller and fell in love with the Polysix bass (first patch in the soft synth). Started playing around with that sound, and voilá, the intro to the song was done.

Hyperloop is the first release on my new label, Untouchables.  This is just a taste of what's to come on this outlet I created for releasing my more experimental material.

All of the synth sounds in this song were conceived entirely using my analog modular synth rig, and I wrote it with the specific intent of performing it live. This is the initial song I composed on request for The 8-Bit Guy to demonstrate the Casio Casiotone MT-68 keyboard. However, it was using too many other sounds and samples so it didn't feel in tune with the rest of the demo songs for the channel. So this is to showcase a little more how the keyboard could be used in conjunction with other synths.

In addition to layering the MT-68 on both bass, chords and playing the lead melody, these were used too:

A little happy synth song I've been working on the last week. Turned out pretty nice.

You Make Me Smile

Electronic musician from Norway. I started playing piano/keyboards in the mid 80s. After a few years at the municipal music school, I quickly grew tired of the simple piano-only education and got to move on to classes with keyboards and synths. From the early beginning with Technics K-200 rhythm keyboard from 1983 via some Casios/Hohner keyboards, I evolved with the later Technics KN-1000 and KN-2000 before moving on to Roland XP-50. As the computer revolution made DAWs affordable, 1999 made sequencing using Cubase easy and the studio grew ever larger with more outboard gear. Today the studio has become a sizeable and functional MIDI/arranging studio with over 40 synths/modules and more centered around a MacPro with MOTU’s Digital Performer, and numerous more or less famous productions.

I have always had a musical approach towards sound engineering and composing, rooted mainly in vivid harmonic structures and saturated compositions. Inspiration has always been the likes of Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Eric Serra to name a few giants in the electronic scene, but also a heart towards well produced pop music from the 70s and 80s as well as epic film scores from John Williams, Alan Silvestri and Hans Zimmer. The baby era of computer music from the late 80s and early 90s was also a heavy influence.
