A song inspired by my first year living in Iceland, particularly the extreme  variations in light between summer and winter. 

This song is from an upcoming project I'm working on. It marks a change in direction from my previous music as my life evolves and changes.

Ilana Waniuk - violin

Pose IX: Chorus, uses the ‘Chorus’ audio effect as a metaphor for instrumental composition. The work is intended for a solo violinist, or violinist working with an electronic producer, to record and layer four different violin parts to create the electronics of the work. These parts derive from pitch, rhythmic, and timbral variations of the live solo violin. Alternatively, the work may be played as a violin choir with violin solo. While many violins sound in the final work, I strove to explore the space between harmony and timbre, counterpoint and the ‘fuzzy’ unison. The work is dedicated to and written for Ilana Waniuk.

Premiered by Montreal’s Quatuor Bozzini on 14th Nov., 2015. Co-presented by Blue Moss Ensemble and the Music Gallery with the support of the Ontario Arts Council.

Program Note: Scientists have recently revealed that a species of moth in the Kirindy forest of Madagascar drinks tears from the eyes of birds. Birds can usually fly away from these predators, but not while sleeping. The Madagascan moths were observed on the necks of sleeping magpie robins and Newtonia birds, with the tip of their proboscises inserted under the bird’s eyelid, drinking avidly. Sleeping birds have two eyelids, both closed. So instead of the soft, straw-like mouthparts found on tear-drinking moths elsewhere, the Madagascan moth has a proboscis “shaped like an ancient harpoon,” with hooks and barbs. It is inserted under the eyelid where the barbs are used to anchor it in place. The team does not yet know whether the insect spits out an anaesthetic to dull the irritation. They also want to investigate whether, like their counterparts elsewhere, the Madagascan tear-drinkers are all males who get most of their nutrition from the tears. (Deborah MacKenzie)

Take was recorded as a stereo out straight from my rack, with EQ and compression added in Ableton. I then had to isolate different elements of the song using EQ and gates to use as audio sources for the visuals. Not the cleanest way to do it, but it kinda worked. I think I'll be multitracking from now on. Sorry about the noise in the audio. I had a digital module beside my spring reverb and was getting some nasty interference :(

Percussion: VPME Quad Drum
	-Kick is separated on the left channel to be used for sidchaining. 
	-Snare, Hats, and Glitch percussion are running through Clouds withe the Kammerl Beat Slicer firmware.
	-Freezing/Modulating the Beat Repeater using the Delptronics WiiCHUCK module.  
Arp:  Qu-Bit Scanned running through the erica synth Black Spring Reverb
Bass: “Zigzag” out from Intellijel Dixie 2+ is filtered through Qu-Bit Tone for low frequencies. Braids passing through a high-pass filter mode on Intellijel Polaris, then running a Boss DD-3 delay and a Line 6 Verbzilla. It’s then Mixed together with the bass from Dixie. 
Using the Endorphin Milky Way for some compression (though I can’t recall on what elements)
Everything is running into the WORNG Soundstage for stereo placement and additional filtering, then into my audio interface.
