The story behind this song:
At ShaLeigh Dance Work’s rehearsal in January for enVISION: Sensory Beyond Sight, sound designer Erik Ramquist brought a binaural microphone rig to experiment with recording what it would be like to be co-director and performer Davian (DJ) Robinson who lost his vision as a child. With this rig, Erik captured a moving speech by DJ while he was leading an exercise called Safe Zone that asked all creative collaborators to huddle in a tight circle.

That night when Erik sent the track out to the team, composer Eric Hirsh was immediately inspired and took it into his composing program to set it to music. This is the first thing he intuitively played. This song is the result and became the basis for the musical thematic material for the entire show.

"My Funny Valentine" is a track from vocalist Kate McGarry's new trio album The Subject Tonight Is Love. Featuring McGarry, guitarist/bassist Keith Ganz, and keyboardist/accordionist Gary Versace, the album explores the concept of love in its many forms and from several different perspectives over the course of a dozen alluring songs.

Love is not only the subject but the very substance of this project. The album is the culmination of more than a decade of work and friendship. McGarry and Ganz are partners in life as well as in music, while Versace has been a close and frequent collaborator with both.
Only such longstanding relationships could lead to the free-ranging but sharply focused sounds that are captured on The Subject Tonight Is Love. Together, the trio decided to respond to the divisiveness of the day's headlines by communing with one another - and, through their crowdfunding efforts, with their fans. "Especially in difficult times, artists have a responsibility to make music that invites listeners to a place where it's safe to connect with the tenderness and longings of the human heart," McGarry says. "The Subject Tonight Is Love is a jazz love letter to a hopeful 2018."

Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning “from the heart,” and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album by Orquesta Akokán feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. Assembled and led by Cuban vocalist José “Pepito” Gómez, Orquesta Akokán is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. It features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at Havana’s hallowed state-run Estudios Areito.  Areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important Cuban records have been made.  The album was produced by Jacob Plasse and arranged by Mike Eckroth.

Eric Hirsh is a restless and ambitious musician whose growing, genre-crossing body of work is finally being showcased in “Distillation,” his debut album as a bandleader.

For the past 16 years, Hirsh has lived in Durham, NC where he co-creates as a founding member of progressive hip hop quartet The Beast and as a director of Orquesta GarDel, a large-format salsa band. Increasingly, he has focused on writing and performing with a jazz quartet comprising longtime friends and Beast rhythm section Pete Kimosh (bass), Stephen Coffman (drums), and Aaron Hill (saxophone).

Hirsh is a 2012 recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council Composer Fellowship, and a four-time winner of the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award. Residencies at the Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Jazz Ahead, Chicago’s Ravinia Steans Music Institute, and Brooklyn's School for Improvisatory Music each pushed Hirsh closer to the material on “Distillation.”

An enthusiastic collaborator, Hirsh has performed or recorded with the North Carolina Symphony, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Nnenna Freelon, Jim Ketch, Shana Tucker, Emily Musolino, Greg Humphreys, and The Community Chorus Project. He has performed at Duke Performances, North Carolina State University Center Stage, The Stone (New York), the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the North Carolina Art Museum, UNC Center for the Study of the American South, Lake Eden Arts Festival, Shakori Hills Grassroots Music Festival, and The Art of Cool Project.
