Less than one minute excerpt out of an hour of bat recording at Zuidlaardermeer near Groningen in the Netherlands. Replayed at 0.14 times the original speed. You hear crickets, they are the rhythm section, geese that sound like elephants or lions and on top of that noctule bats hunting above the mics.

Fieldcast: Episode One (Pilot) - Recording the Swallows

Recording was made from the safety of a side-by-side, sitting in the tern colony of Main Station. You can get a great feel for just how noisy these colonies can be, with hundreds or thousands of birds living in close proximity to each other.

"I didn't realise how physical a process grief was - like being hit by a car."

One evening in the autumn of 2013, the American financial journalist and broadcaster Sally Herships received a short email from her husband telling her he was never coming home again. At first she thought it was a joke, but when she got home he and a suitcase had gone.

As Sally's life unravels, she begins to keep an audio diary. It's a way both of processing what's happened to her and of creating a support mechanism as she tries to cope with the aftermath. From the night he left, her husband cuts off all contact and Sally, broken-hearted, is tortured by a single question. Why?

"I think this is one of the stages of heartbreak. There's the ice cream stage, the comfort food stage and the doughnut stage. Maybe they all fall under comfort food, but I'm lactose intolerant so I can't really have ice cream. I'm just making up for that with doughnuts."

Sally's vulnerability, defiance and the mundane practicalities of survival are laid bare in her recordings and in her reflections on how she strove to heal herself after this seismic betrayal.

The season finale sees a return to the inside of George's Mind. Episode 6 introduced Sanyu, a young idea on a mission to break out of the Poet's overcrowded headspace and reach his audience with her most meaningful contribution. After escaping the "Research and Development" faculty of George's Mind, Sanyu participated in a version of Episode 8 that simply wasn't all that, by her standards. Determined to deliver unprecedented value to the audience, Sanyu decides to "save" Episode 8 from averageness, fighting off insecurities and the ever-changing conditions of a creative mind. The ensuing adventure is a story of hope, fear and sacrifice relevant to anyone who has ever dared to dream big. In many ways, Sanyu embodies the message of the podcast, put most aptly by Victor Hugo: nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

Singer-songwriter Emma Lee Moss (aka Emmy the Great) returns to the playground to re-explore one of her earliest musical influences, the clapping game.

Emma finds the playground very much alive with song, new and old . So how is this seemingly old-fashioned pastime surviving in an age of YouTube and smart phones?

Emma speaks to children and researchers, as well as exploring the archive of amateur folklorist Iona Opie, to understand the secrets of the clapping game’s success since the 1950s.

How are songs created? How do they spread? How do they last generations? What makes them catchy? These are the fundamental questions at the heart of any songwriter’s profession and Emma thinks the answers lie with the overlooked songwriting prodigies of our time – children.

Listening to games from her own primary school in Hong Kong, to the playground songs of England and Iceland, Emma traces the global passage of clapping games and tries to unpick their craft. Could she learn from the creative process behind the clapping game? As children borrow lyrics and melody from adult culture to work into their games, Emma borrows from the playground – composing riffs and rhythms as she goes.
