As the night drew close, they hopped into the car and began to drive. They were headed north, in the search of flickering stars which would dance in a euphoric ultraviolet haze and shine bright against the deep black backdrop which might one day swallow them hole.

They were all sat quietly as they waited for the darkness to fall, in the meantime they drove slowly on.

Mattias El Mansouri is set to release a new EP via the ever excellent Aniara - utilising perfectly emotive pads alongside deep rolling percussion to create atmospheric House come Techno.

Following 2020’s 'Point Vacancies', the debut EP from Jamie Paton and Mike Bourne’s collaborative act Metal, the duo return with a trio of dubwise remixes from Mr Paton himself as well as a peak-time stormer from fellow Bristol artist, Hodge. The latter immediately sets the record ablaze with a driving thump, duo of grainy hi-hats and a chalky clap. He layers an anthemic three-chord pad progression, building octaves, peppering in arpeggiated bleeps and articulate lead melodies, then tops it off with a few modular elements that retain the character of the original, before climaxing in true rave fashion. Proper. The following three mixes by Metal’s own Jamie Paton make apparent his sonic obsession — the type of infinite tweaking that sees some artists/producers to the edge of madness, or at the very least satisfies some dragon-chasing addiction. There’s a successive deconstruction from 'Remix' to 'Dubwise' to 'Dubwise II', most notably a reduction of rhythm and drum machinery, but also in general tonality. The melody remains central but is gradually obscured, taking on a less and less recognizable form, and by the end we’re left with a skeleton of the track, quips and cranks, an assembly line of aluminum sheeting punctuated by demented nuts and bolts. As with the previous EP, the sparsity of elements illustrates just how far one can twist aesthetics, proving that self-imposed limitations can often propel an artist’s process and land them somewhere unfamiliar, somewhere foreign, somewhere enchanted.

Uplifting dub-infused club music from Utrecht, where https://soundcloud.com/lunaludmila has been carving out her own electronic micro cosmos over the last two decades. The Dutch dj and producer returns to SoHaSo with the beautiful Hoisin EP, which represents her bright look on how dance floors should move. 

While working on her upcoming live set, this creative process led to a lot of new music, as the four tracks on this EP illustrate. Take for instance title track Hoisin Dreams, which combines sultry strings with breakbeat-infused rhythms and pulsating baselines. Change of Scenery is equally challenging and bright. With its stomping kickdrums it even gives a slight nod to Underworld. On the club friendly Thalia, tribal rhythms take the front stage while closing track Waterkant is clearly a more dreamlike affair, with its dub heavy basslines.

Moscoman arrived at the ESP Institute last year with a fistful of killer tracks and an imitable recipe for hummous, since then we’ve seen his debut with the dancefloor bomb ‘Akachi’ and a collaborative follow-up release with long-time cohorts Red Axes. We’re now excited to enter a new chapter with Moscoman’s debut full-length album ‘A Shot In The Light’. This creative outpouring spans years of musical trials and tribulations, finally coming full circle to tell the story of an artist leaving his home in Tel Aviv to pursue his passions in the electronic mecca of Berlin and beyond. Moscoman’s unique approach evolves and devolves over the course of eight songs, enduring highs and lows yet never resting for too long in one place—thus illustrating his personal metamorphosis as well as his acute skill of giving many voices to one wild imagination. This music is deliberate, almost cheeky with a youthful sense of optimism running throughout, and even in its most aggressive moment there is always an element of hope.
