Marcus Lambkin aka Shit Robot is, in many ways, as pure DFA as anyone else. He’s been here since before the beginning, a centrifugal force pulling everyone together, an anchor of no-nonsense style and humor that is as core to our being as the fucking lightning bolt.

We’ve put out a lot of Shit Robot records. They’re all great. But it’s been a minute since the last one. (Life happens.)

Earlier this year, the drought ended when Marcus sent us some demos he’d been toiling away on in the attic. We loved them immediately. They were raw and rudimentary tracks that felt completely unbothered with where they might fit in and what year it was. They were sharp and smart, the sound of the party where we wanted to be.

He went to Al Doyle’s place in London to finish them off, and then James mixed everything here at DFA. Bob mastered it in Chicago. Somewhere along the way, Suzi Horn from Prinzhorn Dance School and Mutado Pintado from Warmduscher added two incredible vocals as only they could.

It’s 5 Songs, both the name of it and the thing itself. Nominative determinism. 5 complete belters.

I had the immense pleasure of being hosted in the splendid Balearic Brekfast show of the lovely Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy in November 2024, for the 'Archeo Recordings 10 Year Anniversary', with my mix and a special interview in which I also talked about my musical origins and the scene music in which I grew up, between Florence and Bologna ( https://www.balearicbreakfast.com/post/balearic-breakfast-episode-200-meeting-manu-archeo-archeo-recordings ).
On this occasion I took inspiration to make this mix.
These are some of my favorite songs by my favorite bands from the Italian New Wave / Alternative Rock 80s scene, mainly from Florence and Bologna, my cities: Litfiba, Diaframma, Gaz Nevada, Neon, Confusional Quartet, and again ... Violet Eves, Kirlian Camera and Pankow.
At the beginning of the 80s I was too young to have been to their concerts (I did it later, at the beginning of the 90s for some of these bands) but I still breathed that wonderful air of excitement and innovation and I listened to this music at home from my mother's vinyl collection: 'I was a child and I never stopped discovering beyond the boundaries of reality'.

For the last installment of Canela En Surco we had the great honor of having John Talabot as Nohj Atotbal in our home studio. The brains behind Hivern Discs as well as one of the people closest to our friends and supporters Discos Paradiso since they began; a friend of the radio show, and above all, a man that has spent his whole life searching for records and learning how they should be played.

This episode is a great example of exactly that; a master lesson in selecting and mixing that left us speechless for over two hours. Now we want to share this mix with all of you as a celebration of our 100th episode.
