Directions by Dj Essential-i is a valiant comeback and solid mission statement backed by American songstress Samantha Faison and SA's Vuky J and Nativeroots. This cut changes hands three times with the Nativeroots Main Vocal Mix, Vuky J's Soulful Vocal Mix and Nativeroots dub with the charm of Samantha Faison flowing without sounding gimmicky. 

The EP is too heavy and provides an optimistic jolt to the contemplative proceedings and also fits well within the nostalgic premise. An instant classic supported by the likes of QB Smith, The Advocate and Vinny Da Vinci. A great job well done of setting a high standard to the South African House scene with cascading drums, funky guitars, gentile piano keys and soothing strings to the mix, establishing an unexpectedly classical and groovy blend. It all adds up to one impressive EP, especially since Essential-i has been in silence for the past 2 years.

Essential-i has done great things after all.

Benefit (Main Mix)

A near perfect combination of funk, R&B, trip-hop and jazz, Slow Train Soul meshes the smooth, chocolaty vocals of singer Lady Z. with multi-instrumentalist Morten Varano's remarkably varied sounds. Somewhat like Morcheeba but with a greater emphasis on the bluesy, cool voice of Lady Z., the duo has hit a home run with their debut. Too upbeat to be chillout but not frantic enough for the club crowd, they find the middle ground between the two. Yet the album works because the songs -- all co-written by both members -- are immediately accessible. This isn't just background music for Sunday mornings. Tunes like "Twisted Cupid" with its Tropicalia/"Girl From Ipanema" groove, sport choruses, lyrics and riffs that are beautifully crafted and instantly memorable. Lady Z.'s sensual vocals drift and hover over the music, never oversinging but holding center-stage. The electronic backing is surprisingly warm and organic, even with the brittle nature of the percussion, giving the vocals a fluffy, comfy bed to float above. The music conjures images of dark, slightly menacing streets, lit by neon and streaked with rain. The low-boil funk grabs hold on "Tell Me Somethin'" as Lady Z. overdubs backing vocals and plays a mean, slinky-'70s-style wah-wah guitar. Varana works miracles with his keyboards on "Naturally," making the bass sound like an upright acoustic and the drums sound like they're being played with brushes. Every track is immaculately produced;slick and shiny but with a beating heart underneath and just the hint of impending danger. Imagine Sade fronting Portishead and you're close to the evocative sound these two create. It's a luxurious, beautifully imagined and stellar debut that shows tremendous potential for Slow Train Soul.

Nativeroots and MXO feat Peppercons - Lavida Loca

GOGO Music carries on with genuine songs, presenting you this time a production by the South African trio Nativeroots who are featuring Zano on vocals. The Original of "Taking Over The World", already causes stir on the motherlands dance-floors and is now ready to hit them worldwide with fresh remixes by the ever soulful Sean McCabe.

Nativeroots was formed by Mindlo and Essential-I in 2008 who were later joined by Vuky-J, all of them young producers, musicians and DJs from Pretoria, who came together with a vision of creating their unique sound comprising soulful sounds and African rhythms. The recognition and support from legends like DJ Christos and Vinny Da Vinci earned them a stable place in the music industry and most of their production already gained support by popular radio stations like Metro FM and YFM in South Africa. Thanks to their skills, they were as well chosen as presenters at the SAMC (Southern African Music Conference) in 2010 and 2011, where they shared their experiences and some of the techniques they use in the studio. As remixers they reworked songs of some of the world's leading house music producers including Abicah Soul, Black Coffee, Jamie Thinnes and Oskido.

Vocalist Zano must be counted beyond the best emerging from South Africa. His journey started when he moved to Pretoria to study music and where he met Shota. This meeting led to an opportunity in 2004 where DJ Black Coffee was looking for a vocalist for his song "Happiness" which he was producing for DJ Christos & Vinni Da Vinci's (DJs @Work 4) compilation. After that he was called to work with many influential artists in SA's music industry including the legendary late Lebo Mathosa. He became her backing vocalist and songwriter. In 2008 Zano released his critically-acclaimed single "Hello". The song put Zano on people's ears, eyes, and minds. Zano followed this up with a collaboration with Ralf GUM for "My Story", which was the first appearance of him on GOGO Music and further built Zano's brand as a prolific songwriter. Zano as well wrote and sang "Someday", released on Black Coffee multi-award winning and platinum selling album "Home Brewed".

UK based soulful darling Sean McCabe delivers the remix honours for "Taking Over The World". At the age of 26, Sean has not only already produced and remixed for the prestigious King Street Sounds, Strictly Rhythm, Soul Heaven, and Z Records, but he has also played at the Soul Heaven's 10th Anniversary at the Ministry of Sound and three times at the highly respected festival Southport Weekender. His remix-vita includes artists such as Donae'o, Dennis Ferrer, Quentin Harris, Stephanie Cooke, Todd Terry and Barbara Tucker to name a few. Now for the first time on GOGO Music he delivers once again one of his beloved classic soulful and Jersey old-school influenced workouts, which already made him a favourite for Tony Humphries, Joey Negro, Phil Asher and many more.

It’s about time for the fifth instalment of the Compost Black Label Series – unveiling some of the finest cuts in the label’s recent history in a versatile DJ mix crafted by Compost family member Thomas Herb, who built a strong reputation as a DJ when it’s about merging soul-injected house, techno and disco into a musical journey. Featuring winner tunes and remixes by Phreek Plus One, Osunlade, Woolfy, DJ T. or Rainer Trueby, Herb is also highlighting the work of new breed like Emil Seidel, Philipp Stoya and Emilie Nana, who all contributed high-quality tunes on the Black Label within the last year. Playing on top of the game since about one and a half decades, the Bob Beaman resident DJ, holding a steadily growing national and international schedule, is kicking things off with some proper nu-school vibes until he smoothly blends to balearic and disco influenced territories – then somehow he’s already in the middle of Holland Tunnel, the New Jersey styled tune by Muallem, opening our minds eye for the glittering skyline of Manhattan and our ears for this music called house - unfolding its purest grooves and energy within the mix.
