The reality around you suddenly turns into a beach bar called «Carousel». It smells of cypress, charcoal fish and cheap cigarettes. The lights are dancing on the sea surface. The dance floor is sticky because of all the alcohol spilled overnight. There are only you and a hugging drunk couple dancing there (he is a chubby man in a light coloured loose-fitting suit, he’s hardly pronouncing «I’m technically married, but …»; she is a petite brunette in a provocative short red dress). Somewhere on the embankment howls the siren of a police car. Moustached bartender puts your (well, whose else?) misted glass of beer with a swaying head of foam on the counter. He unequivocally bites his lower lip and for some reason you smiles broadly. It’s clearly that tonight you are going to his place. Everything is rapidly slipping away, dissolving in the darkness of the southern night. All you had to do to experience all of that was just to turn on the mix of our precious Andrey Zhilin for 5/8: radio

"Downtown Calling expresses the diversity of the sonic influences that music had on Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life.  
 
The mix is created around references from his works, with hints to Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Duke Ellington. It takes inspiration from photos testifying of his encounters with Anna Domino, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, James Chance, Vincent Gallo, strolling through Downtown New York in the 80s, and to what I imagine Basquiat might have heard on the radio and in clubs, with tunes from Rammellzee, Arthur Russel, The Last Poets, and other tracks that touched me personally and needed to be featured. 
 
Like a soundscape wandering from Jazz to No Wave, from early Rap to cinematic passages, the mix is punctuated by interludes of Gray, the music project of which Jean-Michel Basquiat was a member and that created experimental, underground, and poetic music."

Études Downtown Calling

The next mix for our "Film Screenings" series was compiled by one of the project's contributors, a musician from Krasnoyarsk HMOT.
Stas made the mix from his favorite tracks from the last 2 years and various sound artefacts that for various reasons ended up on his computer's hardrive.
Ambient and electroacoustics, outsiders pop-music and cartoons soundtracks, poems, field recordings from Siberia and exclusive unpublished materials, all of that combined in a 66 minutes long audio collage.
