I wrote and recorded this song in 2016. It was intended for a film (that I was ultimately fired from, lol). The song is very easy to play, as I tried to pick the low hanging fruit and not outsmart myself. This was especially important as the score had be in under a deadline.

The opening guitar riff was initially only played once or twice in the piece. The music coordinator for the film jumped on a phone call with me, and asked me to come up with a version that used that riff throughout. I thought that was pretty astute. Gosh, that guy is probably more responsible for writing this song than I am!

This song's title "When I Sleep Your, Eyes Close" is derived from Pablo Neruda's poem, Sonnet XVII. The song (and poem) signifies a love that is so pure, unconditional, and natural -- that it feels like an inherent part of oneself. It's how I feel about my wife, and my son. I am them -- they are me.

The First Noel is a traditional Christmas carol that is generally believed to have originated in Cornwall, a region in southwestern England with a rich Celtic heritage.

The carol's Cornish roots are evident in its name, "Noel," which is derived from the Cornish word "Nowel," meaning "Christmas." The song's melody and structure also bear similarities to other traditional Cornish carols.

While the exact date of its composition is unknown, The First Noel is thought to have been written sometime in the 18th or 19th centuries.

I'm a huge fan of artists like Jeff Buckley and Loreena McKennitt -- who tend to accentuate their cover songs with long, ethereal preambles and bridges. For "The First Noel" I wrote an introduction in the minor key, and added a post chorus. I believe this adds some depth to the piece, signifying Mary and Joseph's journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem

The First Noel | fingerstyle guitar + TAB

I'm a massive fan of Hozier, and his performance of "Blood Upon the Snow" has been on my to-do list for a long time. The piece is from the game, God of War Ragnarök; an epic saga that takes players on a heart-wrenching journey through Norse mythology. As a solo fingerstyle arrangement, Blood Upon the Snow, sounds sophisticated, but it's fairly easy to play. The piece will be a good opportunity for intermediate guitar players to get into some hammer-ons and trills. All of the chord shapes are basic and easy to play.

Enya's music is instantly recognizable for its ethereal, and atmospheric sound. Her music is comprised of Celtic influences, New Age ambience, and multiple languages like: Irish Gaelic, Latin, and Welsh. This all adds to the mystical and otherworldly feel of Enya's music.

"May It Be" from the soundtrack of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, really demonstrates her ability to create epic and emotionally resonant music. I've always loved this song, and I can't believe I waited this long to create a fingerstyle arrangement. It perfectly captures the friendship and courage of Frodo and Sam.

The Lord of the Rings: May it Be (Enya) | fingerstyle guitar + TAB

Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Biutiful" is a searing exploration of the human condition, and mortality. Starring Javier Bardem (in an incredible performance) the film delves into the complexities of a man struggling to reconcile his personal demons -- with the immense challenges of living on the fringe of society.

Bardem portrays Uxbal, a street vendor and small-time criminal navigating the gritty underbelly of Barcelona. Uxbal's life is a constant struggle, plagued by poverty, illness, and the looming threat of death. As he faces a terminal diagnosis, he becomes consumed by a desperate quest to protect his children and secure their future. The film's gritty realism is accentuated by the bleak beauty of Barcelona's urban landscape. Bardem's performance is a raw and emotionally charged portrayal of a man grappling with his own mortality.

The score, composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, accompanies Biutiful's narrative with minimalism and eclecticism. In many of the songs, Santaolalla is using a backing track of urban sounds against his principle melody. The effect is almost like dust on a film reel -- ever so slightly scratching away at the creation. The song "Lait" is particularly poignant piece -- reflecting the emotional turmoil experienced by Uxbal.

Gustavo Santaolalla: Lait (Biutiful) | fingerstyle guitar + TAB

This piece is very obscure -- and I had a bunch of folks request this all at once on YouTube and Instagram. Although it's a great guitar riff, it might only appeal to fans of the Netflix series, Outer Banks. I refer to this as the Midsummers (guitar theme). The song is from season 1, episode 5. To this date, my recording of this song has a mind-blowing 1,265,000 plays on Spotify.

While there is no official musical score for the first 2 seasons, Fil Eisler is listed as the official composer. I can only assume this untitled motif is by him. Though, there's a BIG chance that it's random temp music from a database,  which is often used in television pilots. That would be crazy -- that a beloved piece of music from Outer Banks is just random music from a totally unknown composer.

Midsummers comes off as a nice étude (a French word meaning "study") for guitar. This is a musical composition, typically short and challenging, designed to improve a specific technical skill of the instrumentalist.

Outer Banks: Midsummers (guitar theme) + TAB

Fingerstyle arrangement and guitar tab for, A Time of Quiet Between the Storms, by composer, Hans Zimmer. This is the title theme of Denis Villeneuve's, Dune: Part Two.

After completion of Denis Villeneuve's Dune in 2021, Hans Zimmer, was still inspired and continued writing music. This led to the piece, A Time of Quiet Between the Storms. Zimmer tours extensively, bringing his film music to audiences all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people have already heard this tune, as he used this "mystery" piece to open his shows.

Now that Dune: Part Two is released, "all will be revealed" as Hans Zimmer mentioned on Instagram.

As for the song, it's vintage Hans Zimmer -- like something from Gladiator. He has a way of keeping a consistent melody, and slightly altering to chord progression underneath. A very elegant move and something I'd like to incorporate in my own writing.
