Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards. The artist also references religious and historical figures, such as Jezebel, to illustrate the consequences of straying from one's own principles and values.
The second verse is directed at men, criticizing those who prioritize material possessions and status over their responsibilities and relationships. Hill calls out toxic behaviors such as domestic violence and irresponsible fatherhood, and questions how these men can hope to succeed in life if they are not right on the inside. The song ends with a dialogue that reflects on the difference between love and being in love, suggesting that true love goes beyond the surface and accepts a person as they are. 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is a powerful reminder that self-respect and integrity are key, and that we should be aware of the pitfalls of materialism and objectification in interpersonal relationships.

FNX Omar - Doo Wop

It was my turn to host the Disco Waltons Sunday Service on NDC on Sunday night. The guest mix was a no show and do you know what? I'm glad - it gave me a full two hours to do my thing, and I loved every second. I've been taking a lot of inspiration (and endless Shazams) from my favourite DJ Young Pulse, and this was a full two hours dedicated to what I've started calling Forgotten Disco - rare but impeccably good high energy disco and boogie from the 70s and 80s. It's music that's incredibly close to my heart, and after seeing Young Pulse bust out an incredible vinyl set of just this sort of thing recently I decided to have a go myself (albeit not on vinyl!). No fewer than 45 absolute stompers in this mix, and I bet you know less than half of them!

Disco Waltons Sunday Service 20th April 2025 - Even Funkier's 2 Hour Forgotten Disco Takeover

Co-host @gregmiddleton took over the show this week, and delivered a sun-drenched show full of balearic vibes, with special guest, Fran Deeper. @fran-deeper

Fran Deeper, from Mallorca, Spain, is one of the most important references of the House / Nu-Disco scene. He's the owner of the prestigious record label Spa in Disco, which has published more than 100 titles in digital format.

His extensive musical career and Nu-Disco Underground with electronic touch style has opened him the doors to some of the most prestigious DJ booths all over the world: Madrid, Mexico City, Ibiza, Tulum, London, Guadalajara, Berlin, San Francisco, Marseille, Jakarta, Barcelona, Milan, Stockholm or Bali, to name a few.

In all of them, he's shared the stage with some of the most important global representatives of the style like Pete Herbert, Rayko, Thomass Jackson, Ilya Santana, or Ray Mang, making him a veteran of the dance floors.

Thanks to his long career, he's also collaborated with some of the most well-known international record labels like Midnight Riot, Rare Wiri, NDYD, Spirit Soul Records, Love Harder Records, or Hot Digits. Besides, he's also collaborated with some of the top blogs like 'Music is 4 Lovers', 'Gouranga,' 'Le Visiteur,' 'Deep House Moscow,' 'Red Bull,' 'The London Disco Society' and even radios like 'Vibes Radio,' 'The Basement Radio,' and currently on a weekly program for the prestigious 'Ibiza Global Radio. All in all, he's one of those DJs that feels exceptionally comfortable playing the dance floor, that surprises you with his musical selection and, even more importantly, that achieves the golden rule: Never stop dancing.

Funkier Sounds celebrated its 6th birthday with an hour of tunes from me and then an hour of tunes from a DJ and producer that I’ve been into forever. My hour was the usual mix - starting things mid-tempo and funky, bringing things down a notch and then cranking things a touch with a few promo goodies before the handover.

In hour 2 I was dead chuffed to welcome none other than Fingerman. Gregg’s a bit of a legend in the game, and someone who I looked up to loads before I got into producing. Love that I’ve put out a couple of bits on his annual Hot Digits compilations (eyes on this year!), love that we hung out at Glasto a few years back, and love that he’s done a brilliant mix for my show! It’s the expected level of lushness, launching straight in after the trademark spoken intro. Gets quite full on towards the end too, but always keeping it cool, well-mixed and very Fingerman.
