The Funkier Sounds Radio Show

Well, this is the episode that nearly never was - repeated tech problems scuppered the live broadcast and I had to abandon it, which was highly annoying… but I managed to record my bit properly the next day. My hour was actually more like 45 mins - a whistle stop tour of worldwide grooves, some mighty funky shizzle and some lovely disco gems to finish. Glad to have got this one down eventually! 

In hour two, after welcoming one half of ‘Bangers & Mash’ My Mate Kate a few weeks back, it was time for the other half, Gentleman George! George and Kate spent this summer bringing silliness, mashups and fun vibes to festivals like Wilderness, Secret Garden Party and Glastonbury, and George kindly put this mix together showcasing a wide range of disco sounds across 75 minutes. Funkier Sounds Episode 149 - Gentleman George Guest Mix

My little show has hit 150 episodes young, and since my attempts to snag a big name for a guest mix failed, I decided that the next best way to mark the occasion was with a special two hours from me. I pulled together a playlist of some of my very favourite tunes in my collection (which by complete coincidence ended up being exactly 150 tracks!), and played from that for the full two hours. I got through 39 tracks, each a complete banger in my opinion… and a couple of the better tracks that I’ve produced made it in as well. We start slow and soulful at around 80 BPM and work up through the gears - topping out at a full 130. Needless to say, I enjoyed this one lots!

Funkier Sounds Episode 150 - Even Funkier Two Hour Special

I kept things bubbling around the 100 BPM mark for quite a while this time, because it felt good… then I picked things up with a little tribute to Sam from Sam & Dave who has sadly left us, a few promos, some disco, a few slightly more banging bits and some jazzy goodness to round things off. 

My guest this time was Stewart Birch, a wicked producer and DJ from up North. His set is full of big, fun disco and funky tunes, and is very enjoyable indeed.

Funkier Sounds Episode 152 - Mannix Guest Mix

My hour was one of those unpredictable affairs when I’d just bought a load of music and was playing exclusively from that - a bucket of assorted tracks that were new to me, although not necessarily new new. Big basslines gave way to cosmic chug, and it mostly hung together surprisingly well! 
Hour 2 was a really fun new mix from Flick C, who recently did a mix for my Funkier Sessions series and has now returned for a radio slot. Big, big tunes in this one - from Jamiroquai to Sophie Ellis-Bextor, pumped up versions of Curtis Mayfield and Michael McDonald and a whole lot more, you’re in for a high energy hour!

Funkier Sounds Episode 153 - Flick C Guest Mix

This episode was part tribute to two legendary women who have sadly left us recently - Roberta Flack and Gwen McCrae. Two tracks from each in my hour, and what wonderful tracks they are too. I also played a load of new promos in the second half, and ended on a bloody classic.

Hour two was the second guest mix appearance from my good Danish friend and boss of Discoholics Anonymous Recordings, Ken Avalon - AKA Discoholic Ken. Ken’s a top guy and his record label has quietly become one of the very best out there, and one I’ve released a few tracks on. Ken’s mix is slinky disco vibes, keeping the tempo down around 110 for the duration, and there’s another Gewn McCrae track in there too, which is lovely.

Funkier Sounds Episode 154 - Discoholic Ken Guest Mix

My hour of Episode 155 was, once again, a bit of a tribute to geniuses that have sadly left us recently. After bidding farewell to Gwen McCrae and Roberta Flack last show, I did the same this time for the great Roy Ayers, Angie Stone and Yam Who? of Midnight Riot. I opened the show with his remix of my own track that came out on MR a couple of years back, and fitted in a few from him and Roy, and one from Angie too. Come on 2025 - stop it! 

Hour two was very special this time. I brought you a guest mix from a very talented producer who caught my ear late last year - Bralan Arias from Bogota, Colombia. His mix is almost all his own stuff, and almost all of it is unreleased. Funkier Sounds Episode 155 - Bralan Arias Guest Mix

The first half of this episode of Funkier Sounds was very much a Southport Weekender affair, thanks to me making my second visit there last weekend. It was, with one exception, all tracks I’d heard there, so after a little warm up it was more or less wall to wall soulful house with a splash of gospel house for good measure. I ended my hour with something brand new from me, that will be available for a free download later this week. 

For hour 2 it was time to hand over to Alessandro Oliveira, a DJ and radio host from Brazil. Alessandro has kindly invited me to be on his show, and I’ll be his guest this week! Alessandro’s mix is a brilliant disco house selection, but not that slightly annoying type of jacking disco house - this is refined, beefed up interpretations of classics, with a few lesser known gems in there too. Funkier Sounds Episode 156 - Alessandro Oliveira Guest Mix

My hour started off nice and funky, quickly built up the tempo to cram in a few promos, and ended up with a few dusty disco belters north of 130BPM. Fun times!

I was lucky to snag a very special guest for the second hour. French DJ, singer, composer, multi instrumentalist, producer and audio engineer David Baluteau AKA Joi N’Juno. He’s another one of my favourite producers, specialising in funky, danceable tunes with African influences. His mix is bloody brilliant - lots of tropical sunshine sounds, some solid nu-disco and housed up worldwide oddities, with a few of his own in there, including a bit of unreleased stuff. Loved every minute of this one, and I hope you enjoy it too.

Funkier Sounds celebrated its 6th birthday with an hour of tunes from me and then an hour of tunes from a DJ and producer that I’ve been into forever. My hour was the usual mix - starting things mid-tempo and funky, bringing things down a notch and then cranking things a touch with a few promo goodies before the handover.

In hour 2 I was dead chuffed to welcome none other than Fingerman. Gregg’s a bit of a legend in the game, and someone who I looked up to loads before I got into producing. Love that I’ve put out a couple of bits on his annual Hot Digits compilations (eyes on this year!), love that we hung out at Glasto a few years back, and love that he’s done a brilliant mix for my show! It’s the expected level of lushness, launching straight in after the trademark spoken intro. Gets quite full on towards the end too, but always keeping it cool, well-mixed and very Fingerman.

Funkier Sounds Episode 159 - Fingerman Guest Mix

After last episode’s 6th birthday special, I was back with more funkier fun for episode 160! I had a slightly shorter bit of the show due to a longer guest mix, but I still crammed in all sorts - disco, nu-disco, boogie, hip hop, funk and of course a bit of weirdness. 

The guest mix this time was a real treat - 70 minutes of beats, breaks, funk & soul and hip hop from DJ Russkins. Russell is a fan of the show, and when he sent me this mix I knew it would fit the bill perfectly - it’s a fast moving and fun trip through genres and eras, with loads of fun mashups and recognisable hooks. Been a while since I’ve had a guest mix quite like this, but i love it!

Funkier Sounds Episode 160 - DJ Russkins Guest Mix

I started this episode slow and slinky, but switched things up halfway to road test a few promos. Tried to keep it a vaguely summery vibe this time, and covered lots of bases as usual.

This fortnight’s guest mix was from Leon Dahl, who’s an ace producer based in NZ that I’ve appeared alongside on some compilations. It also turns out he’s a wicked DJ, as shown by this mix - an hour and a bit of eclectic but very funky sounds. There’s a lot in here but it flows so nicely - there’s funky stuff, old school stuff, ghetto stuff, banging stuff… all the good stuff! And then a genius slowdown at the end - didn’t see that coming.

Funkier Sounds Episode 161 - Leon Dahl Guest Mix

My hour was an ‘I’ve just spent a load on Bandcamp and Traxsource, let’s see what happens’ special - only tracks that I’ve just downloaded and don’t really know yet… these ones are always fun and a bit unpredictable. Started at a hip hop tempo and things quickly picked up, it was a fun hour and I cammed in 26 of the little beauties.
Then in hour 2 I was very pleased to hand over to a rising star in the disco scene, Charlie Price. Charlie’s already making big impact at a young age, and this mix shows you why. In the words of Charlie himself…
“My goal for this one is themed! It's Dr Packer Vs Michael Gray and I have chosen this theme because I am due to play alongside them in August in Bournemouth.”
And what a lovely mix it is too - textbook Gray and Packer vibes, which is no bad thing.

Funkier Sounds Episode 166 - Even Funkier Two Hour Special (Final NDC Broadcast!)

Times are a’changing for my Funkier Sounds radio show - I’ve made the difficult decision to take it off NDC, its home for the last few years. It’s purely so I can be a bit more flexible with when I do it and the format - guest mixes have been a real pain recently, so now I’ve got the freedom to do one hour, or two, with or without a guest mix. Funkier Sounds Episode 167 (80s Boogie)

I kept things fairly moody for this one, with a mix of deep house and broken beat kinda vibes - it was fun flitting between 4/4 and those looser percussive vibes. Then things went a bit bumpy in the last half an hour or so, with a few US and UK garage flavaz just because I fancied it.
