The Funkier Sounds Radio Show

Oooh, this episode was a fun one. For the first hour I started slow and picked up the pace in chunks, getting rather damn funky for a while. The second half hour was almost all new promos, with some rather delicious selections… but never going above 120BPM. 

In hour 2 I was thrilled to welcome Nova Funk back to the Funkier Radio controls. Nova Funk guested on my show a few years back under a different name, shortly after I recorded a mix for their series. That mix was one of the first guest mixes I ever did, and it meant a great deal to me back then. The Nova Funk mix series is still ongoing with occasional mixes, and well worth a listen as there are some brilliant, unique selectors in there. The consistent high quality makes it one of my favourite mix series to this day. 

This time Dan’s treated us to some of his favourite Disco House selections. But not that big, brash, sometimes a bit stupid sort of disco house - these are refined cuts, true to the Nova Funk ethos of offering something a bit classy. But he still builds things up nicely into a mix that bangs in the last 20 minutes or so (with a lovely little surprise for me in the last track!). A wonderful addition to the Funkier Radio series!

This one was a cheeky prerecord when it went out on NDC, as I was away on my holidays! Started things off pretty banging this time, then slowed down, then sped back up. A few new bits from me in there too.

Funkier Radio Episode 115 - The Funk Assassin Guest Mix

Back live on NDC for this episode after my holidays, and started off fast paced with my new vinyl release that’s out on Moiss Music now. I soon slowed things back down for some slinky and funky grooves, then picked it back up to bring you brand new music from Discoholics Anonymous, Lisztomania… and an exclusive copy of the first ever edit from last fortnight’s guest - The Funk Assassin! 

The second hour featured a guest mix from London based DJ Dan Cluskey, who has very kindly put together a lovely mix of disco and house vibes. Dan is a passionate music lover who I keep bumping intoin places like Sushi Samba and Gala Festival, and he’s a bit of a Kerri Chandler superfan. Surprisingly there’s no Kerri in this mix, but lots of smooth uptempo funky vibes from the likes of Dave Lee and Jamie 3:26.

Funkier Radio Episode 116 - Dan Cluskey Guest Mix

I bloody enjoyed this episode! As usual I crammed in a few promos alongside the eclectic mix in hour 1. In a departure from my usual ways, I slowed things right down in the last 15 mins… to make way for my guest this fortnight, J-Felix, who started his guest mix with a generous slab of hip hop. I saw J-Felix DJ earlier this summer at a day festival in Crystal Palace Park which was headlined by Sister Sledge. I really enjoyed listening to his eclectic, funky selections in the sunshine, so decided to invite him on for a guest mix.

He’s put together a wonderful mix that would suit a sunny day. It’s mostly hip hop, and that’s just fine with me. But the pace picks up in the second half - still some hip hop flavours, but some boogie funk and the like too. A bit different to many of the guest mixes I’ve had on recently, but all the better for it.

I was mixing live for the first hour, then I handed over to… well, myself, for a mix that I recorded a few weeks back for a competition. Funkier Radio Episode 118 - Even Funkier Guest Mix

Excuse a couple of technical gremlins in the first bit of this show, happens to the best of us. Anyway, once I got the mic sorted I was up and running with a slightly rebranded show - now called Funkier Sounds. I was all over the place in my bit of the show, covering obscure disco, red hot edits, soulful house, weird funky bits, and since our guest mix this time was only 45 mins I used my extra 15 mins to simmer down with some divine slow jams. 

The guest mix was totally worth waiting for though, as I was lucky enough to bring you a mix from one of the best DJs in London at the moment, Sarahtonin. I’ve seen Sarah a couple of times warming things up expertly for Low Life, and I’ll be seeing her again on Saturday. Her mix was short but very sweet - starting with African vibes and working up through chugging, percussive rare disco and wonderful versions of slightly familiar tunes.

Funkier Sounds Episode 120 - Marshall (UK) Guest Mix

Funkier Sounds Episode 122 - Guy Mitchell (The Funky Soul Guy) Guest Mix

This first hour of this episode was about two things - firstly the Discoholics Anonymous 4 compilation, that I’m featuring on alongside a load of amazing producers. I played my track and some of the other, much better tracks on there. 

The second focus was celebrating the music of the late, great Amp Fiddler, who we sadly lost recently. His tracks have been regulars in my shows and mixes, and I played three of his funkiest in this episode as a little tribute. RIP, you funky soul.

In hour 2 I handed over to Fray Bentos, a DJ and producer who I’ve been following for a while. He’s released on loads of labels that I’ve been on like Hot Gorilla, Discoholics Anonymous and Hot Digits, and always brings the funky vibes. He’s proved that in style here with an excellent mix - starting slow and moving through the gears very nicely. It’s mostly classic funk vibes, but with a bit of a disco-tastic finish. I bloody loved it!

Funkier Sounds Episode 124 - Even Funkier Guest Mix

Show two of 2024 felt like a good one. My selection was mainly oldish stuff, taking in vintage funk and disco, filthy basement club vibes, garage, hip hop, house, a little balearic tangent and a couple of new bits from myself.

In hour two it was my great pleasure to welcome Rose Corps on to the show. Rose’s mix is wonderfully eclectic, which is exactly what I try to make my show - so her mix fitted in beautifully. It’s one of those lovely mixes where you never know what’s around the corner, every track’s a surprise. Less worrying about genre… more vibe!

Funkier Sounds Episode 125 - Rose Corps Guest Mix

Episode 126 was another enjoyable one - I had a lovely time in hour one, mixing up all sorts of weirdness. Decided to start slow-ish and build up rather than jump around the BPM, so we go from moody Afro influences up to pumping disco, with a couple of brand spanking new bits from me in there. Quite smooth mixing from me for once, except at one point I hit the wrong button and completely stopped the music… but I don’t think anyone noticed! 

Hour 2 was bloody good! We were treated to an hour of disco delights from Loughborough-based party starting duo DiscoJam. True to their name, this was a wonderfully put together and expertly mixed journey through disco and nu-disco sounds with a great mix of favourites, lesser-known cuts and a few surprises. Well worth a listen, and if you find yourself near Loughborough you should probably get yourself down to one of their parties!

Funkier Sounds Episode 126 - DiscoJam Guest Mix

I went in at a high tempo for this episode, slowed things right down then built it back up - all in the course of 40 minutes. It was a shorter set for me this time, because my guest mix was an hour and 20. Doing the honours this time was Chris Allen AKA Mr Feel Good. His mix is bloody brilliant - a wide ranging trip with influences of disco, house, funk, hip hop, pop, jacking and a whole lot more. Wonderful stuff!

Funkier Sounds Episode 127 - Mr Feel Good Guest Mix

This one’s all about the guest mix really so I won’t talk too much about my hour, except that I premiered a new edit that I’m quite pleased with and which will be out soon! 
Anyway, on to that guest mix. Bit of a special one that has been in the works for ages and I wasn’t sure would ever happen… but here it is! It’s my massive honour to bring you an exclusive guest mix from none other than Danielle Moore of Crazy P. Crazy P are one of my absolute favourite acts, and they’ve been doing the business for literally decades now. They’re one of the world’s most in demand disco outfits… although with their unique take on the sound, calling them ‘disco’ is doing them a bit of a disservice. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing them do their thing a couple of times and they put on a hell of a show, led by Danielle’s wonderful voice and stage presence.
I was totally trying my luck when I reached out to Danielle on Instagram to ask for a mix, but bless her she replied, she’s absolutely lovely, we’ve been chatting a bit and she sent me this monster of a mix. Full of the sort of deep, low slung, after hours disco that Crazy P are known for, it’s an absolutely impeccable selection, ending on a Crazy P classic. Possibly the biggest guest I’ve had on my show to date, and definitely one of the finest mixes ever to grace my little show. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

The guest mix was a bit longer this time so my bit was shorter than usual, but I still found time to cram in a ton of the good stuff. Then it was over to my guest for an hour and 12 of top notch tunes. My guest this time was Ravy, a DJ from Bangalore, India. He’s played parties for Dynamite Disco Club supporting the likes of Moodena, and his mix is a lovely journey through high quality house and disco house flavours, with a nice afro twist towards the end.

Funkier Sounds Episode 129 - Ravy Guest Mix

Episode 130 nearly didn’t happen - a few days after Episode 129 my mac broke in what seemed like a fairly conclusive manner, and I only just got it fixed in time. Had that not happened I could have played the tunes but would have had no way of broadcasting live, so it would’ve had to be a prerecord. In the end the show was able to go ahead as normal, but without any of the usual promos or new bits as I’ve been fully out of action in that regard. But I had fun delving into the depths of my USB to bring you a nice variety of funky goodness, including some African-flavoured beats from my recent Radio 1001 set, some hip hop and lots of the usual funk forward flavours. 

Then my guest in hour 2 continued the funky goodness. Si Kemp treated us to an hour of divine disco flavours, starting slow and slinky and and not increasing the tempo too much throughout - keeping things nice and classy throughout… just how I like it. A very high quality set, which I hope you enjoy.

Funkier Sounds Episode 130 - Si Kemp Guest Mix

I had a nice time during my hour, playing a selection of disco and funk oldies, with a few promos in the second hour. Good to be back in business with my laptop fixed and my setup in its new and improved location - excuse a bit of feedback on the mic as i’m still getting everything just right. 
My guest this time was FunkSupply, a DJ from Portsmouth on the South coast of England. I had the pleasure of meeting him on a dancefloor in East London a couple of weeks back watching Young Pulse, and I can confirm he’s a nice bloke. His mix is nice too - a pulsing, high energy mix of disco and disco house with tracks from the likes of Jamiroquai and Shapeshifters.

I started this fortnight’s show with something brand new and unreleased from me, then wobbled around the tempos as usual. Largely kept quiet as I keep getting mic feedback and haven’t been able to sort it out yet. Ended my hour with a nice trio of obscure disco gems up at around 130bpm, in preparation for my guest!

Funkier Sounds Episode 132 - Abby Daze Guest Mix

My little show has turned five! Five years ago, just days before my second child was due to be born, I for some reason decided it was a good time to start a radio show. And so that’s what I did - the show was called Funkier Radio and it wasn’t a real radio show, because I prerecorded it and just put it up on Soundcloud. But now it’s live, on a real radio station and has been renamed Funkier Sounds. Over the years I’ve had some brilliant guests including The Reflex, Michael Gray, Danielle Moore, loads of less known but still brilliant DJs and a whole load of my friends, and for this celebratory episode I brought you another very special guest.

My guest was Sam Redmore, a DJ and producer who I’ve loved for a few years now. Someone on the more funk & soul side of the sounds I’m into rather than the house and disco side, Sam was the perfect selector to help me mark the fifth birthday. Sam’s mix is brimming with funky delights - funk and soul originals and reworks, some hip hop stuff, some jazzy stuff, some of his own stuff… a fast moving, funky and really enjoyable mix!
