Spring is a season defined by hope, we’re emerging from a long winter spent indoors to the promise of this brighter season. It’s the promise of returning to warm nights spent dancing in starlight, and of embracing new and old friends after too many months spent apart, sheltering from the dark and cold.

But now the days are longer, and the city suddenly feels alive, humming away once again.

This spring, we’ve brought together new stories from talented musicians around the world for the third instalment of our Seasons series.

Each producer crafts a unique musical tapestry, often using thumping drums, beautiful synthetic melodies, and haunting vocal samples to capture the pure jubilation of spring and excitement for what lies ahead.

Stefan Biniak - Mad In Love (Unfinished Sympathy)

The track “Smokin’ Love” opens with swirling piano chords, catchy lyrics highlighting the band’s signature dub sound. The track details multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer Scott Woodruff’s upbeat narrative of wanting to smoke with the one he loves, highlighted in the lyrics:

“I wanna get high, I wanna get low, come on I wanna smoke little spliff with you / Lord knows I’m not a fool, I’m just crazy for you.”

“Smokin’ Love” was recorded the same way as all their songs; in Woodruff’s home studio with each instrument individually recorded and layered in unison to one other. The band has previewed the track through their social media sites and have recently started playing it live.

'As we slowly enter the cozy and chilly autumn season, Plaisirs Sonores introduce Nōpi with a great dose of warm to soundtrack this musical adventure. The Ukrainian might be a new face, but he has already figured on some high-profile labels such as Kindisch, Akbal and When We Dip XYZ. For his debut on PSR, he unveils one brilliant track - 'Hosu' which perfectly showcase his talents as a producer.

'Hosu' is a spine-tingling number with majestic keys and chords overlaid with deep, warm drums. It's a real trip into melancholic moods and is the sort of lush track that sinks you into a reverie.

On remix duty, Erdi Irmak tightens the drums and create, with a majestic synth, a brilliant and memorable melody. Pad layers are added subtly never overpowering each other, creating a serene, surreal auditory experience.'

The Bamileke are a Grassfields people. They are the largest ethnic group in Cameroon and inhabit the country's West and Northwest Regions. The Bamileke are regrouped under several groups, each under the guidance of a chief or fon. They speak a number of related languages from the Eastern Grassfield branch of the GrassField language family. These languages are closely related, however, and some classifications identify a Bamileke dialect continuum with seventeen or more dialects. The Bamileke people are known for their very striking and often intricately beaded masquerades, including the impressive elephant mask. Masquerades are an integral part of Bamileke culture and expression. They are donned at special events such as funerals, important palace festivals and other royal ceremonies. The masks are performed by men and aim to support and enforce royal authority. The power of a Bamileke king, called a Fon, is often represented by the elephant, buffalo and leopard. Oral traditions proclaim that the Fon may transform into either an elephant or leopard whenever he chooses. An elephant mask, called a mbap mtengis a mask with protruding circular ears, a human like face, decorative panels on the front and back that hang down to the knee and are covered overall in beautiful geometric beadwork including much triangular imagery. Isosceles triangles are prevalent as they are the known symbol of the leopard. Beadwork, shells, bronze and other precious embellishments on masks elevate the mask's status. On occasion, a Fon may permit members of the community to perform an elephant mask along with a leopard skin, indicating a statement of wealth, status and power being associated with this masquerade.

Makadem is a superb benga music Kenyan artist having some releases for On The Corner Records and Dagoretti Records. Benga is a genre of Kenyan music and it was evolved between the late 40s and late 60s in Nairobi. In the 1940s, the African Broadcasting Service in Nairobi aired a steady stream of soukous, South African kwela, Congolese finger-style guitar and various kinds of Cuban dance music that heavily influenced emergence of benga. There were also popular folk songs of Kenya's Luo peoples that formed the base on benga creation. Makadem was a tour guide based in Mombasa. Having been born a musician, he began substituting guiding with musical performance for tourists in Diani Beach Hotels. By 1999, he had recorded his first single Mr. Lololova a reggae song that branded him. In 2001,2002 and 2004, he curtain raised for Gregory Isaacs, Mighty Culture, and Glen Washington respectively in Nairobi. In December 2004, with the Nairobi City Ensemble, he traveled to Djibouti for the Fest-Horn Festival. In 2005 he released his album Ohanglaman and changed his style of music from a raga to an African music popularly referred to as Anglo-Ohangla which is a fusion of Ohangla, Nyatiti, and Dodo -traditional Luo styles of Music, with other modern African beats with heavily accented Luo-English Vocals. "Obongo Bless Me" is a brilliant emotional track released as single for Dagoretti Records back in 2019. Kellie Sakkaku pay their respects to Makadem and transofm the original into a rollin and heavy emotional African-Bluesy heaven!!!
