Wilkinson's Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1

Cristian Vogel is as creatively footloose as his potted life story might suggest: a German-Chilean, he grew up in the British Midlands and has been based variously in Brighton, Barcelona, Berlin, Geneva and Copenhagen. In the mid-90s he was a bona fide techno superstar, revered by his peers and playing to huge crowds at clubs like Tresor – as well as half of the insane electronic soul duo Super_Collider with Jamie Lidell. Since then he has dug deep into art and electro-acoustic music, ballet soundtracks and academic research – but never lost touch with his club roots, and never stopped flying his freak flag high. And if you doubt that, check this video and track reworked from his recent FIFTEENTH solo album, PolyphonicBeings.

The summer holidays are wrapping up and everyone is making their way back home from their coastal getaways up and down the coast. Although it sucks that it's over, the summer hols have treated us well - the surf has been prime, the sun has left us with a tasty bronze colour and the cocktails have been flowing.

With the mass movement back to the cities comes the dreaded traffic, it's always chokkers! To take the edge off the bumper to bumper madness we've thrown together an hour and a half of jams to keep your summer dreams alive.

The main themes in the mix centre around wood percussions, thunderous synth pads and chopped Zulu vocals - creating a kind of dark atmospheric sound. It is anthem like, vivid, tribal, abstract in parts and yet specifically dramatic. 

The sound reminds me - in part - of techno in the late 90s where my dj'ing journey began at 'Teknival' and illegal rave party but also has elements of early dubstep which was deep and mystical.

Most of the tracks were new releases that came out of my recent trip to Durban as well as tracks recently sent to me via whatsapp.
 
The mix is a tribute to the artists of my label Gqom Oh!, their crews and friends. It also includes a handful of exclusive tracks from the next release "Gqom Oh! X crudo Volta Mixtape".

It is Rough, rugged and raw. It's riot music.
