Beaming from the success of Denham Audio colab mixtape Club Glow Vol 1, and Hotline smasher Anyone from London, Borai is back with another couple of Breakstep bangers. Part resurrection, part new direction, this release harks back to a nascent scene, not yet eclipsed by the half time sound we came to know as dubstep. Picking up where others left off, Borai takes the tempo range down a fresh new avenue of exploration.

Higher Level Records is Borai's long overdue foray into label management alongside Henry Bainbridge (Dub Studio / HLM). Not content with simply releasing their own records, the dub plate duo will put their 15 years' experience running club nights and a cutting house into every release. Only after each track has been cut to dub and road tested at their eponymous  night will they be committed to lacquer and pressed up.

Vinyl is distributed through Juno Records and available from all good record shops from the 15th October. Digital files will be downloadable from our bandcamp page 2 weeks later.

Next up on South London’s Diffrent Music comes the debut release from exclusive new signing, BrandNewTrumpets.

It was tragic circumstances which brought about a chance meeting between BrandNewTrumpets and label boss Dexta, but they say every cloud has a silver lining, and the result here is a collection of the most tender, cinematic and charmingly quirky music ever released on Diffrent.

From the downtempo ‘FM Frequencies’ through the halftime, triplet-fuelled ‘The Lost Empress’, and the increasingly sinister ‘Ticking Dragon’, it’s an EP filled with swathes of lush, cosmic pads, minimalist percussion and breathy vocal accoutrements.

Though the likes of Synkro and Consequence during the height of the Autonomic era provide seemingly obvious reference points, BrandNewTrumpets has arrived at her sound independently of that movement. Instead, her love for more traditional jungle/drum & bass can be heard in the breakbeat flashes of ‘Pranayama’ and moody subs of the title track, the result a swirling concoction wholly unlike previous iterations of either style.

Named for a 1961 release by legendary jazz musician John Coltrane — BrandNewTrumpets is a keen follower of the genre — the vibe throughout the ‘Ode To Olé’ is heady and emotive. Though perhaps not as overtly chaotic as the iconic saxophonist, there’s a pronounced idiosyncrasy to the production — structural shifts, switches in vibe, sudden left turns — that speaks of a similarly free-wheeling mindset.

What’s clear across all the tracks is BrandNewTrumpets’ innate sense of musicality, penchant for treading unknown paths, and ability to infuse every heartstring-tugging, head-nodding moment with a wondrous sense of curiosity and sensitivity. Diffrent Music is proud to welcome her to the family.

BrandNewTrumpets’ ‘Ode To Olé’ EP will be available digitally from Friday 25th October, alongside a limited-edition, double-sided 7-inch run of the title track, complete with a high-quality digital print of the artwork.

We're delighted to be able to welcome Scientific Wax head-honcho Equinox to 7th Storey Recollective, bringing with him three previously unreleased cuts from his 90's archives.

As one of the most respected DJ's and producers in Jungle & Drum n Bass, Equinox needs little introduction to those in the know, with a slew of releases spanning well over 25 years on Brain Records, Paradox Music, Inperspective Records, Bassbin, 8205 Recordings and his own Scientific Wax and off-shoot imprints to name just a few. 

Here, we travel back to 1996 to bring you three tracks made when Eqiunox was still only the tender age of 19, working tirelessly to hone the skills and sounds that we all know him for in 2020.

The opening track, 'Dark Territory' is a lo-fi 8-bit trip featuring many of the elements he would become beloved for, simply put; wildly chopped amens, dark brooding pads, and deadly sub-bass.

Flip to the B side, and first up you'll find 'Temperal Nexus', a glitched-out roller with customary manic drum edits, incredible atmospherics by turns industrial, dark and dreamlike.

Rounding off the EP is 'Trojan' - arguably a more polished production, but by no means less fierce! 

A huge thanks to Equinox for agreeing to provide the tracks for this release, and for all the hard work in getting them together :-)

A Shocking New Vision Of Bass Destruction

This is one of those moments.

Dieselboy - Unleashed! is his most layered and nuanced studio mix to date. Returning to his old school mixtape roots where he isn’t limited to what tracks he could use or license, Dieselboy has used the opportunity to take Unleashed! to another level. 

56 tracks were used to craft a deep and extensive 73-minute mix that reveals itself only after repeated listens. Steering away from banging out an "of-the-moment" forgettable dancefloor rinseout, Dieselboy throws down a wide variety of current and classic tracks and edits, wrapping up the mix with 25 minutes of finely diced dubstep that showcases his current taste in the genre and forthcoming tracks from his dubstep label, Subhuman. Finally, the project is given a tongue-in-cheek graphic treatment that references the exploitation sci-fi fantasy movie posters of of the 1970s. It looks  and sounds hardcore.
