Having been available exclusively as the second disc to 2015's 'Collaborative Works', Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm's improvised audio recordings 'Trance Frendz', taken from their 45-minute studio film of the same name, have been given their own vinyl release – out March 4th, 2016.

Prior to a string of collaborative Erased Tapes releases, which include 2012's 'Stare' 10” and last year’s 'Life Story Love and Glory' 7” and 'Loon' 12” – compiled on the 'Collaborative Works' 2-CD set, Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm spent many hours together in their studios across Berlin and Reykjavik. Both have carved out genre-defying musical careers and formed unique live shows, creating a fan base loyal to their prolific output.

During a session at Durton Studio in Berlin last summer, Nils and Ólafur invited Alexander Schneider and his camera to document it. The recording continued long after the first take, stretching out into the next day until, eventually, several new improvisations had been recorded in 8 hours with no overdubs or edits. The unexpected nature in which these pieces had been created was reminiscent of their first on-stage improvisation many years ago. It became immediately clear how special these songs were.

"At the end of the night we had all this music that sounded unfamiliar even to us, loudly asking to be included in this collection.”

Originally made available as a 45-minute film on their joint website (www.arnaldsfrahm.com) last September, 'Trance Frendz' will be available to own on vinyl from March 4th, 2016.

The Bearded Man was walking along the shore, waiting for the sunset as he faced west. He wasn’t in a hurry mind you, it was more of a tradition than anything. He was walking around a rocky bend when he chanced upon a beached whale, very much alive, right around the corner. There was no one in sight. Needless to say, he felt terrible, but what could he do? How could one tiny dude possibly move this enormous creature, especially with no technology and being so far away from civilization? Just then, a small mouse scurried past him, heading towards the whale. The mouse said: “Don’t worry guys, I got this!” The Bearded Man — and the whale — were stunned. The whale, desperate as she was, bellowed out a hearty laugh. She said “I’d love to believe you little mouse, I really would, but I think we’re going to have to be realistic on this one.” The mouse said: “Nonsense! Give me 5 minutes!” The mouse then started to dig a tiny hole with his teeny tiny baby paws. He might as well have been moving one grain of sand at a time, and it was taking forever. Finally, after exactly 4 minutes of digging, he uncovered a big red button in a plastic cage under the sand, and gestured for The Bearded Man to push it. The Bearded Man pushed the button, and they heard the sound of enormous gears creaking into motion. The whole beach began to shake like an earthquake and started to tilt upwards, bringing the whale with it. When the slope got high enough, the whale began rolling downwards towards the ocean until she was safe in the water at last. When the mechanism had completed its task, everything slowly returned back to normal, and the mouse covered up the button once more with sand. The mouse looked at The Bearded Man and said: “What? Just cuz I’m tiny doesn’t mean I’m not a genius and can’t build stuff over the course of several, agonizing years that might someday come in handy. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity, dumbass.” It was a strange lesson, but one that The Bearded Man will never forget.

Herbert: Monaberry’s totem old timer, Super Flu’s dear old Opa, house music’s favourite septuagenarian and all round legend returns…

It’s been a while since he last curated a Monaberry collection (his hearing aid kaput throughout 2015)The last time being summer 2014 with Monaberry’s now-vintage ’25 Years Monaberry’ collection. But now he’s dusted off his curating cap, gently leant his walking stick against the wall, shouted “what?” a lot of times, moaned about his clicky knees, yearned for the good old days and, finally, put together one of the Halle-based label’s most beautiful collections to date.
 
Fresh out of the care home, Herb’s first pick – Super Flu & Viktor Talking Machine’s ‘Plastik’ – leads with the gusto of a man a third of his age: a twinkling arpeggio gazes up to clear night skies building in momentum with the beats and a pulsating bassline. Laced with a dramatic breakdown, you’d be advised to stash this one for the next festival marathon.

The melodic tech textures continue as Herb welcomes Boston’s Robot Love to the Monaberry fold with the touching slice of anthemia that is ‘Numbers Station’. A clipped hook gently persists with chiselled insistency. Timeless and driving, Herb tells us he picked it because it’s great to walk around the supermarket really really slowly to. We love it because it will take your dancefloor to a whole new level. Last spotted on ’25 Years Monaberry’, fellow Halle hero Martin Waslewski returns with a wistful piano-primed stroller that sees Herb striding gently but confidently towards a destination unknown (probably the chemist to
get his meds). No walking stick required. Monaberry mainstays Hanne & Lore take old Herb (or Herbie to those in the know) out to the choppy tech seas late at night, sharpen up their finest synth hook and reel in a big one. Like all fresh produce, ‘Tuna In’ is crisp to the taste and will satiate the hungriest of dancefloors. Having previously remixed Super Flu, Dortmunder Philhamoniker and Philipp Armbruster’s ‘Volkwein’, Bebetta returns to Monaberry with her label debut; an ageless groove powered by soft chord changes, mild jazz
textures and faraway crackles, it’s Herbert’s favourite for fireside chats. Finally, Parra For Cuva brings us to a touching finale. Just in time for Herb’s afternoon nap, ‘Borneo’ is awash with dreamy lilts, lingering instrumentation and positive chords. All brought together by shimmering guitar strums and cosmic ripples, listen closely and you can hear Herb smoke-belching in sync with the splashing cymbals. 

Respect your elders, respect the grooves, respect one another: 2016 is about to commence and Herbie’s picked the winning soundtrack to break it in.
