The poems in David Harsent's new collection Fire Songs (winner of the 2014 T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry), whether single poems, dramatic sequences, or poems that 'belong to one another', share a dark territory and a sometimes haunting, sometimes steely, lyrical tone. Since its first publication 150 years ago, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has become the most popular and influential children's story of all time. Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, whose biography of Lewis Carroll,The Story of Alice: Lewis Carroll and The Secret History of Wonderland, is published this spring, investigates the other story that lurks between the lines of Carroll's book - his mysterious friendship with Alice Liddell, the real girl he transformed into a fictional heroine - and explores the history of the imaginary world he created for her. Robert Douglas-Fairhurst is a Fellow and Tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford. His books include Becoming Dickens, which was awarded the 2011 Duff Cooper Prize.

The event will be introduced by Robert MacFarlane, whose latest book Landmarks explores the relationship between words and landscape.

Dervla Murphy’s first book, 'Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle', was published in 1965, and since then her travels have taken her to countries including Tibet, Nepal, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Peru. 'A Month by the Sea', published this month, charts a summer in Gaza. Sara Wheeler’s books include the international bestseller 'Terra Incognita: Travels in Antarctica'. In the newly published 'O My America' she looks at the lives of six women who escaped various kinds of misery to go and live in the Deep South in the 19th century. In a conversation chaired by Joanna Kavenna, whose debut, 'The Ice Museum' (2005), was shortlisted for the RSL Ondaatje Prize, they discuss why travel has proved the best way for them to explore their ideas; the appeal of a genre relatively free of convention and rules; and the particular challenges facing women travel writers.
