Exist no.18 brings two very special UK artists - Steevio & Duckett

Steevio is a live electronic musician who runs the Freerotation Electronic Music Festival, Mindtours record label, and Freerotation record label with his partner Suzybee. Steevio specialises in live improvisations on an analogue modular synthesizer, and records everything as one off tracks in real time. He also performs live as part of AV duo Steevio & Suzybee in clubs and festivals worldwide.

Duckett is a producer and performer from Wales and a core resident of the renowned festival Freerotation. Releasing on labels including Until My Heart Stops, Freerotation, Wisdom Teeth, Greta Cottage Workshop, Galdoors, Bercuise Heroique, etc his music is difficult to pin down but sits somewhere on the edge of house, techno, ambient and experimental.

He hosts a monthly show on Mutant Radio and is about to launch his own label /platform. Highlights worth checking are his Boiler Room live studio sets and Hessle Audio radio guest appearances.

Steevio's DJ set consists of all his own darker techno and broken techno tunes, mostly vinyl releases, a couple of digital only releases, and a recently recorded live jam. Much of this material hasn’t been used in his mixes before.

Ducketts mix consists of entirely exclusive material comprising some upcoming releases and more predominantly includes some exploratory live studio jams at 90bpm.  All fresh material.

Exist Palestine brings forward the highly talented local artists and the brightest musical visionaries in the global electronic music scene. Exist seeks to build bridges between international artists, Palestinian sound innovators, the many that have been displaced, and musicians who are unable to attend the festival due to politically set testrictions. The lineups consist of artists who participated in Exist Festival 2019 as well as the ones who will be invited to play the next editions.

Function lays down the Sandwell District style on this week's RA podcast.

Over the space of the last four years, Sandwell District have managed to carve out a place in the hearts of techno fans worldwide with their austere minimalist sound aesthetic. The label was actually founded by Birmingham-based Peter Sutton (AKA Female) back in 2002, but lay stagnant until it was revitalised with two releases from Sutton three years later. It has since developed into an international effort, with the Sandwell artist roster sharing the label managing responsibilities.

One member of their American wing is David Sumner (AKA Function), who got his first break via a trio of techno twelves for Damon Wild's Synewave imprint. Sumner then went on to launch his own label under the Infrastructure banner, releasing a flurry of his own material before getting in contact with Sutton's Downwards bedfellows Regis and Ian J. Richardson to sign some of their tracks. Their relationship has since grown, with Sumner becoming a fully-fledged member of their techno alliance and using it as a platform for his claustrophobic Sähkö-esque minimalism and bleakly hypnotic warehouse techno. For this RA podcast, Regis and Sumner picked the tracks, while Sumner did the mixing, and, as you might expect, it's a journey deep into the world of techno.

What have you been working on recently?

Finishing up a new Function 12-inch that will form the basis of an album and John's finishing a new Silent Servant 12-inch. Regis has been working with Ancient Methods on a 12-inch for DN.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

It was recorded at our studio in Berlin, Regis and I decided on the records together but it then made more sense to just have me do the physical mix. I had set up a chain that included Ableton, turntables, hardware and effects.

Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?

I think the idea was to somehow represent what we have been doing live/out over the past year (this was a challenge to do in one hour as we play between three and five hours as a rule). From the outset it was about creating tension.

Sandwell District seems to have its basis in a lineage of anonymous techno production. Yet you consent to interviews, do podcasts, etc. How do you walk that tightrope effectively?

I think that's maybe a misconception as artist names do appear on the label. People may come to that conclusion due to operational methods we sometimes employ, as an example, artist names are sometimes added onto a release a few months after it has come out (no doubt due to indecision at the time or some internal squabble). The N/A thing was an experiment in human nature .... probably.

You recently played the Labyrinth Festival for the first time. Can you talk a little bit about the experience?

Regis and Silent Servant have a reputed love for post-punk. Are you also listening to quite a bit of rock music, or is it all techno?

From Sonic Youth to Rob Hood, Einsturzende Neubauten to U.R and The Jesus and Mary Chain to Mr. Fingers there is a connection that makes perfect sense to everyone involved with this so-called label.

What are you up to next?

A Function longplayer, a Sandwell collective album project, a limited Sandwell Mix CD, a remix package of Function tracks featuring mixes from Ben Klock, Norman Nodge and CH-Signal Laboratories and a collaboration with Jerome Sydenham, among a number of other projects.

As I have been mixing the Cocoon in-house compilation for the last 9 years, I want to share with you all the episodes of this incredible adventure from the very beginning up until today!

After the first 5 years at Cocoon Recordings, Sven Väth (OFFICIAL) asked me to mix my favorite tracks of the previous years into a nice compilation.
It was a big honor as it was my first big job although my young age, in fact I was only 19! This was definitely a sign of trust!
The name of this compilation is as simple as good: Eins (one) and includes masterpieces like: Roman Flügel – Geht´s Noch, INGO BOSS – Little Eternity, Dinky - Acid in my Fridge or Legowelt – Discorout just to name a few.

For the third time now, Next Generation host Chris Tietjen compiles the best Cocoon releases of the year on one CD and succeeds in providing a mix that is summarizing the party highlights of the past year in a perfect way.  With three artist albums, the Compilation G and numerous 12"es, Cocoon has again set standards in 2007 and is also planning a lot for 2008: besides the upcoming Minilogue album, there is also an album from Extrawelt in sight.Besides the big hits ("Unreliable Virgin", "Hunter" or "Horizon"), Chris has also included some flip side pearls ("My Cube" oder "Alpha Blend") to the CD, and delivers an impeccable 70 minute set that elegantly steps on the border between House and Techno. Since 2005, the 23 year-old Chris Tietjen is a part of the Cocoon family. With his Next Generation series at CocoonClub Frankfurt, he established one of the most important creative pools for upcoming DJ talents; besides that, he regularly provides the listeners with one of the most crucial musical determinations of contemporary Techno. The characteristic elements of Tietjen's understanding of DJ skills are on the one hand the stress of intensive bass lines and driving percussions, but also the respect for the arrangement of the individual tracks. This fourth label compilation presents all dancefloor burners of the last 12 months on Cocoon Recordings in a diversified and coherent mix: Martin Buttrich, Schneider & Galluzzi, Guy Gerber, Tiefschwarz, Reboot, Adam Proll and Timo Maas undisputedly belong to the group of artists who have enhanced electronic dance music in the past year. In his terrific mix, Tietjen focuses on the releases of Swedish duo Minilogue whose CD/DVD album "Animals" belongs to the most successful releases on Cocoon and thus is represented her with three tracks (among them remixes by Dubfire and Tolga Fidan). The Cocoon Recordings Mix Compilation Series is celebrating its fifth anniversary: after Chris Tietjen, being still a youngster in 2006, had compiled the label's best tracks of 2006 on the CD "EINS" and thus offered a review on twenty-two 12" maxis, we are now facing "FÜNF", on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of Cocoon Recordings.

Every year, Chris compiles his personal Cocoon highlights in a musical cross-section and each time he produces a very unique mix of the best Cocoon dancefloor bombs of the past 12 months. First came "EINS", then "ZWEI" followed, and meanwhile we have reached "FÜNF. Over the last twelve months, the Cocoon Recordings crew has written another chapter of the German Tech House Book. With releases by Loco Dice, Dominik Eulberg or by shooting stars like Guy Gerber and Pig&Dan, we could celebrate some of the biggest records of 2006. 
Guy Gerber's "Sea of Sand", Eulberg's "Bionik" and Loco Dice's "Carthago" even belong to the absolute high-flyers, and with Fuckaponydelic's "Switch the Lights", the first big release of this year is also included. Einzelkind, the artist named Arno Völker, is part of a small collective of producers and DJs within Frankfurt’s techno scene. Known best for their love of stripped-back house and techno, their music is tied closest to Frankfurt suburb Offenbach, and more specifically the region’s best club, Robert Johnson. A number of different crews make up this group of artists: one of them is Völker’s label Pressure Traxx, while others like Traffic and HardWorkSoftDrink share a similar musical ethos.
 
Though he was making music long before Pressure Traxx, in the last six years it’s the main outlet Völker’s become known for. He’s released seven of the label’s records, mostly alongside co-founder Frost. These typically feature nostalgic 90s-style acid sounds, crossed with raw minimal and breakbeats. Other Pressure Traxx affiliates include Ricardo Villalobos, who joined forces with Völker for last year’s 'Arnorac EP'. Völker returns to Farringdon at Cocoon next weekend, so he sent us a mix drawing from the same dubby house and minimal that make up the label’s sonic identity.
