The German trio Brandt Brauer Frick are our special guests for the 10th episode of Dimensions Festival Mix Series. Being one of the hot names on the electronic music scene, the guys are showing top class behind the decks with a selection that spans across various music genres.

Recorded live at the Berlin intimate venue - Loftus Hall, this mix is a fantastic warm up for the BBF performance at Dimensions Festival 2013!

Biography:

Sometimes what you don’t do is as important as what you do. Brandt Brauer Frick have made name for themselves producing techno without the technology, using classical instruments in preference to synthesizers and computers. It’s a negative that’s had positive results. The Berlin trio’s 2010 debut ‘You Make Me Real’ was a forward-thinking gem. They reworked it on 2011’s ‘Mr Machine’, a techno record played totally live by a ten-piece classical ensemble — they’ve graced the stages of dark nightclubs, classical concert halls and cultural institutions alike, namely Glastonbury, Coachella, Montreux Jazz, Lincoln Center, Mutek, Sonar, Southbank, Centre Pompidou, Fabric, Berghain during their 150 or so worldwide shows over the last 18 months. Taken together, Brandt Brauer Frick are the sound of dance music’s rule book being torn up, pulped and recycled into sheet music paper.

I'm from Southampton, and since that's not a very big place I thought it would be more fitting to play some of my favourite old UK Hip Hop records. Philadelphia always had a healthy Hip Hop scene that boasted famous artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Cash Money & Marvelous and Steady B just to name a few. This is the first of our new monthly label mix series, to showcase upcoming talent on Dispatch.

Two of the finest US exports, Quadrant & Iris are the first to step up to the controls. 

Picking up combined releases on labels such as Metalheadz, Hospital and Renegade Hardware, they recently released their first tracks on Dispatch.

Both their Dispatch LTD release with Kid Hops "Convergence / Borealis" received numerous praises throughout the scene and their huge collaboration with Hybris & D-Struct "Graphene" has seen already seen incredible support, as part of the Transit 2 album sampler.

A little less then three years ago the political situation in many countries of the Arab world changed dramatically. Uprisings started in rural areas of Tunisia and from there spread to various countries in the region. Millions gathered in the streets united by their demand for more democracy, rights and participation in the political process. In most cases the reaction of the governing dictators were relentless and severe towards every form of protests. Violence in the streets of Cairo, Tunis and Bengasi escalated and resulted in the overthrow of the governments in Tunisia, Egypt and Lybia.
A year later a group of female singers and musicians from Tunisia (Nawel Ben Kraiem, Badiaa Bouhrizi, Medusa, Houwaida), Libya (Nada) and Egypt (Donia Massoud, Maryam Saleh, Youssra El Hawary) met in Mohsen Matri Studio in Tunis to sing- against corruption, despotism, patronization and narrow-mindedness. The song with Syrian artist Rasha Rizk was recorded some months later in her political asylum in Cairo. Sudanese/American producer Oddisee and Olof Dreijer of the Swedish pop duo The Knife joined the session, participating in the creation of the musical backdrop as well as the often multi-instrumentalist female singers. For the vinyl edition producers such as Brenk, Blackjoy and Blundetto contributed remix versions of the project.

"Sawtuha" (Arabic for "her voice"), the album that is the product of the 2-week session, is a vital encouraging testament of rebellion against the repression of democratic rights, gender inequality, and lack of inclusion. The music is an organic mixture of traditional Arabic music, regional influences and various forms of contemporary Western musical genres. A mixture that may sound contradicting at first but makes total sense once you listen to the music.

The studio session was organized by the Berlin based NGO MICT (Media In Cooperation And Transition) and was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

It’s getting harder and harder to bemoan Kasra’s Critical imprint of most anything. This latest mere 25 minute mix from his label signing, Emperor is a real case in point. Being so short there’s very little let up but the fact is it’s probably rammed full of a ton of new productions and it’s got a very evident meticulous nature to it. Emperor doesn’t try and cloud the product with ideas above its station, the mix’s rowdy, almost call and response like nature surmises the way a whole bunch of people play out, constantly pushing the crowd on and on into more of a fever. And consequently, as a teaser for the next Critical Sound night, it’s the perfect thing to epitomize the type of energy and devotion their crowd provides.

This mix was originally posted last year on Clash Magazine as part of their podcast series.  A mix for celebrating fun in da sun.  

Here's my description on Clash from fall 2012 :
This mix is a soundtrack to your Indian summer, if you’re having one right now, or a mix for those people that are in need of a lil’ sunshine. It’s a very summery/sunny mix to bring you out of your fall funk. Lots of juke/footwork and a lil’ jungle thrown in for good measure. There’s some jokes in there too. I went for the more soulful style of footwork instead of the colder minimal tunes meant more for the dancefloor. I played this exact set at the XLR8R boat party at Dimensions festival in Croatia this summer.
