Leif Knowles is a rare talent. And if you trace the contours of our shared history, you’ll notice that, yep, we’ve been supporting him since day one - when the then fledgling producer was getting noticed with his minimal output before later making deeper, house cuts for the likes of BL and the Fear of Flying imprint. As a business, we fully appreciate that artist exist to develop and evolve to explore new regions of musicality and that’s exactly what Leif did himself last year when he released his debut album, Dinas Oleu. Described by online music portal, LWE, as an album that "entrains the listener into Leif’s distinct sonic world systematically", it saw the Welsh producer take a step away from the dancefloor persuasion and present a more atmospheric approach to his productions. 

Aside from co-running the vinyl only UntilMyHeartStops label, Knowles - who is also a core member of the much beloved Freerotation festival - represents a deeper understanding of the four four, something that, much like us, the Hessle Audo crew fully salute him for. So it came as no surprise when the collective invited him to join them for their full club takeover on Friday 5th December alongside a slew of other special guests. What did come as welcome surprise however, was the fact that Leif graciously handed in an exclusive mix that so fantastically explored the contents of his record box…

Flying through funk, soul, psychedelia, and enchanting soundtracks, Adam Wiltzie commemorates the 30th anniversary of Stars of the Lid’s debut Music for Nitrous Oxide with a mix mirroring the album’s spaciousness and throbbing rawness. The lurching guitars of Wiltzie’s Windsor For The Derby band pace out a textural abyss, allowing for the hushed, gentle twitches of Loscil’s ‘Sticky’ to slowly expand as frost growing on a windowpane, and the fluid melismatic bansuri of Hariprasaf Chaurasia to unravel throughout much of the mix. Smooth organ glides and lush harmonies later lead to a convergence of dextrous, emotive guitar plucks on vAntonio Pinto**’s cinematically swelling ‘Maradona Childhood’.

“It was great fun while it lasted but unfortunately it only lasted a short time. I am appreciative that after all these decades we can return & acknowledge this time capsule from my past & for the mix i suppose If a song is worth anything, its about the life of the listener....”

As both a meticulous technician and a built-in-the-90s raver, Toshiki Ohta is the kind of DJ who can mega-mix his way out of the tightest genre corner. Which is handy, because his gift to FM this year is a near-three-hour mix crafted entirely from this year’s line-up – a task so excessively awkward you have to wonder if there’s some sort of masochistic kink going on here.

Now the risk, obviously, is completing the task to the letter only to deliver a rizzless plodathon of C-tier tunes and awkward transitions. But this is Tosh we’re talking about: no half measures! The result is monument to the moment: hoving into view under a fog of ambient Midland, it starts heady and heads-y, flowing through chuggy electro (auratekh, Lena Willikens) and rugged club tesselations (Ikonika, Prince of Deptford) before hitting a shinier seam of techno intensity (Roza Terenzi, Benton) and exploding into confetti cannon rave (Angel D’Lite, Big Ang).

Unsurprisingly, Tosh rates it as one of the most time-consuming sets he’s ever put together (including his recent eight-hour Goodhood mix). “It was a massive researching process – there were spreadsheets,” he sighs, “because I treat every mix that I do like I’m recording a mix CD in 1995.” Standing O, please!

Having just passed 50,000 fans on Soundcloud, I thought it a momentous enough occasion to share with you a song of great importance to me. In honour of a wonderful person who was a fan since the start, I present to you this.

This is a song that i've been struggling to let go of for three quarters of a year now, made with that dear friend in mind. I hope you enjoy it as much as I wish he could.

Dear Ishiv (Part I)

JD Twich is one half of Optimo, the legendary Glasgow party and a label. Some time ago he launched a new imprint called Against Fascism Trax, attempt to “provoke dialogue that is fundamentally anti-racist, anti-sexist, non-homophobic, non transphobic, non-ageist and non-ableist”. This podcast is a two-hour segment of this set at Hotel Forum's Kitchen from Unsound 2019. Before the performance, JD Twitch said of his Unsound set: “This will be the first ever presentation of an Against Fascism Trax DJ set, an experiment in whether music can convey an intent non verbally.” Starting the set and threaded throughout is the Italian protest song "Bella ciao", which originated in the late 19th century as a working-class anthem and was adopted as a hymn of the anti-fascist resistance in the 1940s. The song takes on new meaning in the current pandemic, as the need for new forms of solidarity — with health workers, cleaners and sanitation workers, impoverished people and all manner of vulnerable populations — becomes urgently clear.
