Yu Yu is a tiny box room in CDMX. Since its opening in 2017, it’s been the home of electronic music in Mexico, welcoming everyone from Darwin to dBridge. In addition to the club, there’s also Yu Yu Record Store, a cosy vinyl stockist that champions the same flavours as its adjoining venue. 

Nico shared a percussive techno mix with us to represent the sound of Yu Yu.

GAIKA (@gaikasays) has been hailed as one of Britain’s most vital rappers. His confrontational music — and writing — is proudly Black, addressing as it does issues of the immigrant experience, gentrification and violence. It’s been called everything from gothic dance hall to industrial electronics for the way it distills Caribbean traditions and the contemporary sound of London, while he sees himself more of an afropunk with eyes very much on the future. Next to a full length and a number of EPs on Warp, this month he has collaborated with NAAFI affiliates on his new EP 'Seguridad' — which is out now —, while his collective The Spectacular Empire continues with its series of streams aimed at celebrating Black culture and raising money for Black causes. 

Over the course of an hour on this week’s mix, GAIKA serves up a positive musical selection. There are times when things get impossibly smooth, but pained passages often follow. It means one minute glossy r&b and purple funk fest you up, then gorgeous original instrumentals and sombre strings bring you back down. Complex and wide-ranging, it’s a mix that goes way beyond club functionality, instead managing to tell the sort of personal stories that real mixtapes should.

Our ‘Streaming From Isolation’ series is fundraising for The Global FoodBanking Network - whose work providing emergency support to people locked in poverty is crucial at this time.

As part of the series, our long standing partner Ballantine's has committed a fund in the form of 20 grants to be distributed to community-driven collectives around the world. These grants will be given to each collective to distribute as they feel best to support under threat artists and those most in need within their immediate community. This support is critical over the coming months whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place and impacting many artists’ ability to do what they love and to make a living.

Weekly takeover days of Boiler Room’s channels will feature performances and sets programmed by these collectives from isolation. Broadcast to the world from artists’ homes and private spaces, these transmissions are a way to stay connected while apart.
